Downfall of the PQ Painful to Watch

Even for federalists, watching the PQ go through its agonizing death throes is a bit much to take. Like a cancer patient ravaged with the disease, but who fights the inevitable conclusion tooth and nail, even those who care, must ask would it not be better if the patient was put out of its misery sooner than later.

Ever since last May's federal election that drove the Bloc out of Ottawa, die-hard sovereigntists held onto the belief that the meltdown was a hiccup, an obstacle like so many others, with the project of Quebec independence remaining intact and inviolate.

Alas for them, circumstances dictate an alternate reality, one where Quebecers have given up on their forty year flirtation with sovereignty, where even those still willing to support the independence option admit that the project is no longer doable.

And so quite simply, the CAQ of Francois Legault is rising to replace the PQ as the natural alternative to the Quebec Liberal Party. It's a party that preaches nationalism without any threat of an actual referendum, something that is striking a chord with many Quebecers who wish to maintain a strong nationalistic front against Ottawa without any of the painful drama promised by hard-liner sovereigntists.

And so, many separatists, including defecting members of the PQ caucus, are moving over to the CAQ, something that Premier Charest is trying to exploit as an issue, calling the CAQ a separatist party in sheep's clothing.

The truth is rather the opposite, those separatists moving over to the CAQ are going to the safest place where they can go to give up their sovereigntist dream without sacrificing their pride.
In order to assuage the guilty consciences of these fallen sovereigntists, Mr. Legault has said that in the future, perhaps ten years, they might review the independence option, a convenient lie meant to make the painful transition more palatable.

What remains are the hard-liners in the PQ and their supporters who live in a fantasy world where they believe, that they can turn things around by pushing the sovereignty and referendum option even harder.
Its like a store raising its prices, in reaction to a market survey that indicates that consumers have rejected the company's products because they are already too expensive. Talk about disconnect...

The reality is that the PQ is out of leaders and out of options.

As the end approaches, we are treated to a frightening view of the real personality of the members of the Parti Quebecois, the selfish, cruel and incompetent fools who are clawing and fighting each other like pigs in a trough.

The opening salvo in the PQ war of independence was fired by the betrayers, the old guard who quit the party to sit as independents because the party leader couldn't produce a successful independence strategy, where quite frankly, none exists.

Led by the ugly duo of Louise Beaudoin and  Louise Lapointe (Jacques Parizeau's wife) and supported by the very simple Pierre Curzi, the betrayal triggered an undisciplined food fight, with Marois served up as the main course.

Then, more betrayers and more defectors, tearful interviews and hand-wringing, the birth of the CAQ, all leading to the inevitable conclusion that the Parti Quebecois is circling the drain.

But reality is hard to accept.
Everybody within and everyone outside the party have suggestions as to how to right the sinking ship, the pages of vigile.net chock full of ideas that smack of flightful fantasy or desperation extraordinaire.

The final straw for the party is the now failed Duceppe gambit.

This desperate belief that if only Gilles Duceppe would take over from Marois, perhaps all could be saved, with party faithfuls telling each other that we federalsits would be quaking in our boots at the threat of so formidable an opponent.

This is of course, that very same Gilles Duceppe who just eight months ago led the separatists to their greatest electoral debacle ever.  What galling fantasy to believe we'd be afraid.

And so in the fine tradition of the PQ, the knives were unsheathed by Marois supporters and Duceppe was gutted like a fish by a monger.  Et tu, Pauline?

At least this time it was the hardliners feeling the hard edge of the blade.

The political tragicomedy continues to run unchecked with today's chapter, a blueprint published in the form of an open letter by the insufferable, Bernard Landry, the ex leader of the PQ.
Here he provides us with his valuable insight, a road map to lead Quebec out of the desert and on towards the promised land.
The solution- a quick referendum. Arghh...

The overwhelming reacting of Quebecers to his open letter? -Indifference....

While hardline PQers and their diminishing band of supporters piss and moan in public, their audience is gone.
The PQ isn't destroyed over infighting as we are led to believe.
The PQ is destroyed because sovereignty is no longer relevant.

It's over...

Ladies and gentlemen of the sovereignty movement, turn out the lights on your way out and please, don't let the door hit you in the ass as you leave.

  1. Oh gosh darnit, Editor, does the end of the PQ and separation therefore mean the end of your blog? Are you saying the pur lainers are going to finally admit English and minorities DO have a welcome and legitimate place in Quebec? Will obligatory French schooling except for a few who fit a narrow definition be abandoned?

Are those CAQ-ers (pronounced: "kackers", a Yiddish word meaning farts, like "alta kackers" or "old farts") going to see the light and PRESTO, restore English language rights? Are they now, Editor?

My answer to that otherwise rhetorical question: SURRRRE THEY ARE...WHEN PIGS COULD FLY!

    1. Yep. It's like celebrating because after decades you've finally rid your house of cockroaches, yet at the same time an infestation of bed bugs are moving in. One pest gone, but another even worse to replace it.

The CAQ is just another variation of the PQ. Same one track mentality: must-eliminate-all-traces-of-English-from-Quebec. Only-pure-lain-Quebecois-are-welcome-in-the-nation-of-Quebec. They haven't even committed to abolishing referendums, just putting it on the back burner for a decade (if they so choose).

And the Quebec Liberals, exactly the same thing as the CAQ and PQ. Just a referendum is completely off their drawing board (everything else the PQ stands for, they stand for).

So pick: PQ with referendum now (vote PQ). PQ with referendum later (vote CAQ). PQ with referendum never (vote PLQ). It's like eating junk that all tastes bad and no matter which you choose, will always make you sick: PQ Classic, PQ Low-calorie, PQ Fat-free.

No matter who wins, we all lose. Quebec is forever doomed.

Strange? Not strange. I offer myself as an example. I proudly live and work in Montreal with as minimum use of French as possible. Yet I live my life comfortably, better than most of those who just speak French. Back to your question, I do function well while 'ignoring' for most part other language than English - and my native language, of course.

Is it also my responsibility that globally French language is losing its importance as it was in the 18th - 19th century?

My respond is for 101 or 401 and OQLF. From their comments they imply that it is 'wrong' to live in Quebec without good understanding of French. My rebuttal is to prove otherwise. 101 or 401 even mentioned that that made Canada a strange place.

Even JF Lisee admitted that there aren't that many non-Francos in Quebec who don't speak French. Rather, his contention was that despite knowing French, these non-Francos still shun the majority in their personal lives.

I personally think that Francos can be blamed for this situation as much as non-Francos, and that JF Lisee is oversimplifying it by pointing his finger squarely at the non-Francos, but this is a subject for another discussion.

  6. Editor: "The PQ is destroyed because sovereignty is no longer relevant. "

This reminds of the late 1980's, when the collapse of the Soviet Union left the Republican Party without a raison d'etre. David Brock, a former Republican pundit turned whistleblower describes the panic that grasped the Republicans by their throats at that time in his book "Blinded by the Right".
Every political movement must have an excuse with which it justifies its existence, and when the excuse loses traction, the fear strikes. No more tv presence. No more quotations in the papers. No more prestige. No more power. No more limos and champagne. No more easy $$$.
The Republicans turned to fighting drug traffickers and opposing the country's "moral collapse" before 9/11 gave them a more powerful excuse. The question is: what is the PQ going to find. Because I see the panic, but I don't see a new excuse crystallizing anywhere.

That's an ironic statement coming from a Quebecois. You are well known for hiding (in the woods) during times of war, i.e. the First and Second World Wars. The French are not renowned for their bravery.

"Sauf que, contrairement au canada, nous n'avons pas encore besoin de légiférer afin de protéger nos emblêmes Nationaux."

You needed to legislate to protect your tacky language and culture, which are too weak to stand on their own. Both should be allowed to go the way of the dodo.

    2. I feel embarrassed to respond to such a nonsensical comment... and yet I will do it anyway.

First of all, you are confusing Quebecers with the French. Second, the French (along with the British, Russians, Americans and others) have one of the greatest military histories in the history of mankind. Many other countries also had right-wing sympathizers (hello, Italy, Spain, Norwegian "Quislings", etc... including in the U.S.) without their sharing such a lengthy land border with the enemy as the French. Most French were at least, if not much more, shocked by by being invaded than were most Americans by 9/11 and traitors were dealt with appropriately.

"Tacky" language and culture?? Please tell me where you are from. French language and culture is one of the greatest contributions to mankind. Let's say that Danish (for example) is "too weak to stand on its own" in a global world (which I don't believe is true). You're saying that Denmark should go the way of the dodo.

Your flushing stupidity makes me feel even more embarrassed for having responded to you. You are a total idiot.

  12. Well, as I vacation in the warm weatheri decided to check in on the blog.

I suspect that the people in Quebec are becoming indifferent to referendums and sovereignty due to the fact that they see the handwriting on the wall. In short, people in the ROC no longer give a rats ass if Quebec stays or leaves. Politicians in Quebec realize this and have laid off on the blackmail that has been typical for the past 40 years. Simple as that. Continue with sovereignty and the ROC would likely call the bluff. This is becoming very evident.

eg. Harper appointing unilingual anglos to key government positions.

Power shifting to the West where French and Quebec is of little concern.

For me and many others, I could care less if Quebec stays or leaves. But if they decide to stay, then the special perks and equalization formulaes should be changed. The damn blackmail has gone on long enough. I think Reed Scowen has it right that Canada would be a much stonger country without Quebec (ball and chain).

Now, if we could only repeal the OLA and drop the special treatments given to Quebec, things would improve markedly in the ROC. Canada is far from a bilingual country and it is only the presence of Quebec that has cost of 100's of billions of dollars over the past 40 years. This money should have been directed to health care , eduation and other programs much more valuable.

Strange, was sitting on the beach the other day in Mexico. Everything was fine until a group of Quebecois came along and made their obnoxious presence known to all. Drank a lot of cervezas, ate a lot of seafood cocktails and in their intoxicated state proceeded to become loud, talking down to the waiters etc. Some people got up and left their chairs to avoid the noise. At the end of the day they complained about the prices and then never left the waiter a tip. Typical.

I have seen this classless behavior many times before. It not any wonder the Quebecois are not held in high regards in the countries they visit.

    1. No surprise about your Mexico experience. Quebecers do carry with them an air of arrogance, rudeness and selfishness, particularly the separatist Quebecois. I've seen it locally, and when traveling abroad. Not just myself, but any friends or family who've encountered them when traveling.

I have a theory why this is. All successive Quebec governments have ALLOWED this province to violate not just the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, but international human right laws. The United Nations has proclaimed that Quebec is violating human rights and freedoms! The UN for christ sake! Yet somehow, Quebec continues to get away with it. The government of Quebec is like a bad parent, it is setting poor example for its spoiled rotten children (i.e. the citizens of Quebec). For the past 40 years it has been teaching its "children" corrupt morals, that they are superior to other human beings by race and birthright.

Is it any wonder we have out of control puppy mills, rampant animals abuse (sick pieces of sub-human garbage who shot dogs in the head with a nail gun, and then let off the hook?), corruption in the construction industry, government, hospitals, anti-English laws, just a completely broken and non-functional society in general?

When the Quebecois travel and encounter other people, they carry with them, that blessing if you will, that the government has sanctioned. You are superior to everyone else who is not pure-lain Quebecois, and for that, you have the entitlement to walk all over them. You are the master race so to speak.

I'm generally quite shocked how friendly and open people are when I visit Vermont, or walk into a store in Toronto. Even New York city, every person I'd talk to in public was friendly and warm. Even the police! Or ticket booth operators in the subway hah!

Yep, Quebec is quite different from the rest of the world. And not in a good way.

A few weeks ago it was also announced a pharmaceutical research plant in Montreal was closing down. Or remember that American company that closed its Montreal call-center overnight leaving hundreds employed? Announcements like these are so routine I cannot keep track. I think major jobs losses in Montreal are more common than major snow falls these days!

Two of my previous jobs were lost because the US companies were temporarily lured to Quebec with promises of tax breaks. As soon as those offers expired, the companies pulled out and moved to other provinces. They just don't want to deal with all the language law crap here, among other things.

And if anyone thinks the CAQ will turn things around, think again. They want to strengthen Bill 101, restrictions to English schooling, and stirring up all the "US vs them" mentality that has literally choked this province to death. All fine by me, Quebec deserves what it gets at this point.

  41. What's with the recent comments? Very productive/useful discussion, on both sides...

"I think Montreal economic community should raise a red alert."

People in the entire province need to wake up, and fast. Even though most of you commenting have only mentioned the language issues, which definitely can't help to make us competitive, I think there are many other serious factors, unique to this province, which are only going to worsen our economic situation over the next few years.

I've mentioned it in previous comments I've posted, but unions and the power they are given in this province has got to be one of the main factors pushing businesses to set up shop elsewhere. Unless they're exploiting our natural resources, why would any company want to come lose money in this province? How many distribution centers are just outside Quebec, to avoid all the problems with our unions and union laws?
The CSN are currently trying to unionize convenience stores... The FTQ used terrorist acts and held the entire construction industry hostage to protect their corruption, with no consequences. Unionized aluminum factory workers in Alma, most of which don't have a high school diploma, making on average 35$/hour, still aren't happy; they don't want any outside labour, ie: cheaper and much more productive.

There's also the state of our infrastructures and transportation network. Because PQ governments refused to invest in our future (schools, hospitals, roads), we're now suffering the consequences. Not only are our bridges and overpasses crumbling, but our highway network is exactly the same as it was 20 years ago. We've only started to expand and improve it over the past few years, with new bridges and new highways. It's going to take us a very long time to catch up.

If you were a business owner, would you want to come here?

Editor, I'm not sad at all that the separatist organizations are dying. Selfish, racist extremists have used René Lévesque's ideas for a greater province to their own means, and have slowly destroyed it in the process. We're all left to suffer the consequences, and we're led to believe this behavior or way of thinking is normal.
What's worse, is that given the chance, they'd want to destroy it even more! Just look at Bernard Landry.. the man can't even admit that there are more important issues to work on, he claims we need another quick referendum. How much would that cost us, and how many more businesses and jobs would we lose in the process?...

Good riddance, thank you Pauline Marois.

After the exodus of companies in that era, Quebec economy stabilized after has been substantially dropping. The companies that stayed did so for various reasons. Political pressure, too big a cost to move, appeasing to francophone market, not bothered by the new laws, among others. Those companies still could conduct their businesses from within Quebec.

There are shifts in the environment I think that make the model that was sustainable from 80s to 2000s is not anymore.

First is the emerge of newly industrialized powers in Asia, notably China and India. Our biggest market is RoC and USA, and with the emergence of those powers the interests of the market move there.

Second is the strong Canadian dollar. Doing business in Canada is not competitive anymore. For companies headquartered in USA, it is cheaper to pull their operations back there rather than here.

Third is the advance in information and telecommunication technology. Before, many activities targeted for francophone community need to be done in Quebec. With the technology, the same activities can be done remotely. Prime example of this is our good friend the Mississauga Guy.

There is no loyalty in money. Companies do not really care about politics. They care about their top line and bottom line. While by staying in Quebec the top line may be the same, the bottom line certainly is not. If the leaders of the community do not do something about it... well I do not know how deep we can go.

That's the right idea: there is a unilingual English Canada, a Unilingual French Canada and a bilingual Canada. I think Canadians who are happy or at least comfortable living in a bilingual place should stick together, from Ottawa to West Montreal and Brossard. You can call that (in Australian fashion) Canadian Capital Territory or, even more ambitiously, Province du Canada (hey, if there is a Quebec City you can have a Canada Province too!).

      Now for my medication... :-)

    2. Vous pouvez avoir l'Abitibi, Chibougamau, Matane et le lac St-Jean. On aura le Pontiac, Gatineau, les Cantons de l'est et Bonaventure. Ça fait ton affaire? On pourra en discuter.

  44. The thing is everyday I see that english is used more and more...so whatever Seppie, OQLF & co are writing here does not matter. The life is going it's way...
So they are trolling, bitchin' and they are trying to get on our nerves, and in some cases they are successful. Nevertheless, in real life the demographics are changing every day, english in Montreal is starting to thrive, ...
The smart francos will not push away Canada not now not in 100 years. It's to comfortable to be canadian.

... to bad the economy is going down.

So you see, nobody will stole your dreams, they will shatter by themselves.
