Anglo Hospital Irks Nationalists

As you probably heard, former Prime Minster Jean Chretien had emergency surgery last Friday to relieve a bleed that was threatening to cause severe brain damage.
The successful surgery took place in Montreal's Jewish General Hospital, much to the consternation of language nationalists who bear a special disdain for the Anglo hospital's attraction to Quebec's rich and famous, francophones included.

The hospital which was built back in the 1930's with funds provided by the city's Jewish community  was never meant to serve Jews exclusively, but rather to provide an environment where patients who were Jewish, could have their dietary and religious beliefs respected. It has evolved over the years into an integrated public hospital that serves more non-Jews than Jews. That being said, the Jewish community continues to shower the hospital with millions of dollars in annual donations, money that funds research and an ongoing building and improvement campaign.

The hospital is perhaps the very best example of a bilingual institution that serves patients in both English and French, something that sits poorly with language militants.

Today the hospital is Jewish in tradition only and while it still serves kosher food and respects the Jewish Sabbath and holidays, it's clientèle is as varied as the local community.  The staff, medical, professional and support is the most diverse of any hospital in Quebec, perhaps even Canada and believe it or not, there aren't many religious or language conflicts to speak of.
The halls are filled with the sounds of English, French, Greek, Portuguese, Vietnamese, Italian, Arabic, Tagalog, and a multitude of other languages.
Rabbis rub shoulders in the halls with Catholic, Protestant and Greek Orthodox priests as they all minister to the spiritual needs of patients.
The hospital is filled with volunteers, a cadre of Jewish, Francophone and English retirees who act as patient and visitor support staff as well as working in the various volunteer snack and coffee shops.

"Eat something!" "Avec plaiser, Monsieur!" "Could I help you with that form" "Suivez-moi Madame!"

It isn't rare to be confronted by a boy/girl team in clown makeup, patrolling the halls and offering cookies to anyone who needs a lift.

The multicultural nature of the hospital and the success it enjoys is what makes it such a threat to language nationalists who see it as the antithesis of what they hold as the Quebec model.

For them, all this is somehow obscene, an affront to Quebec's 'secular' and French language nature. There are demands that the hospital's Jewish and English connection be severed and that the Star of David be removed both physically and figuratively.

But when you're sick, you're sick and for most people, background, language and political affiliation takes a backseat in deciding where one can get the very best care.
When Jacques Parizeau chose to be treated at the JGH a while back, eyebrows were raised and many couldn't resist making snide reference to his "Ethnic" remarks of the past. Perhaps Parizeau was taking heed to an old Quebec adage which tells of a patient "being so sick that he had to go to a Jewish doctor!"
Dr. Marc Afilalo, Dr. Hartley Stern  Dr. Jeff Golan

When Jean Chretien was feeling poorly last Thursday and he was advised to go to the hospital, he chose to make the two hour drive from Shawinigan to the Jewish General Hospital, a decision akin to Danny William's decision to get heart surgery outside Newfoundland.

At the press conference describing the the surgery, the young anglo surgeon who performed the procedure, Dr. Jeff Golan, answered questions from the media in English and excellent French, switching effortlessly between the two.

And so, language militants hate the Jewish General hospital for its success. They don't want to hear about smart, urbane, anglo and ethnic nurses, doctors and technicians who offer service in English  and French and don't think much about it.
Of course they'll offer up some isolated or made up story about a language snafu to prove that anglo contempt for francophones is institutionalized. Nothing could be farther from the truth.

With a little effort everyone gets by at the JGH and that includes elderly immigrant patients who speak no English or French.

"Hey, I need somebody who speaks Chinese. Hello, can somebody help me!" shouts out a nurse.

And you know what?...... Somebody invariably does.

For language nationalists, that's not the way its supposed to work, but for the rest of us, if it ain't broke.....

By the way, here is a video on the Jewish General Hospital, It's interesting because it presents a vision of a working environment that every single language extremist is trying to destroy.

For everyone who says bilingualism can't work or that that French and English communities can't live and work together, please watch the video.  It's an edited version with subtitles.

    Mississauga Guy here!

Looks as if my comments will set the pace for today (no comments showing at the time my comments were written), so I may as well give a personal backgrounder, and no doubt the chronic half wits addressing this blog, in French, will rebut. Even democracy has its downfalls!

The author is correct. The JGH was built primarily by the more affluent members of the Jewish community to address the sensitive matters of the Jewish community, i.e., kosher food and rabbinical chaplaincy services, totally ignored with impunity by other hospitals. It also, AT FIRST, addressed the problem of professionally trained Jews who were heavily discriminated against in the past.

My late mother, MSRIP, came from a small Quebec town in the Eastern Townships and as she was growing up, she aspired to become a nurse. My late grandmother and uncle (a much older brother who dutifully assumed the role of father as my grandfather passed away when my mother was only eight years old) did what they could to discourage her from leaving the protective bosom of her family and small town to leave for the big city (Montreal) to study nursing. In light of discrimination against Jews, they perceived she would be stuck in some backwoods facility far away to practice nursing. Their pleas were met with great resistance, and off she went after finishing high school.

Interestingly, my mother did not study nursing at the JGH (I don't know if they were a teaching hospital then), but at the Montreal Homeopathic Hospital (that later became the Queen Elizabeth Hospital and subsequently closed down several years ago). That facility offered ZERO support for her being Jewish. She had to endure non-kosher food and work Jewish holidays. Nursing school back then was tantamount to the armed forces, and anyone who violated the rules was subject to strict and severe disciplinary action. My mother was once punished for three months because she let a fellow student smoke in her dormitory. The smoker was punished for a year (I don't remember what the punishment was). One other time she was questioned for taking a personal telephone call while on duty. She was informed her brother-in-law had died, and had to explain it to her supervisor. If they still trained nurses that way today, there would likely be no nurses. The woman endured a lot...things I would never tolerate, so you KNOW she was determined to become a nurse!

    Mississauga Guy (Continued):

Anyway, I digress, but it goes to show the tribulations one goes through to achieve an ultimate goal.

After finishing three years of these annoyances, my mother graduated. One final no-no my mother did was refuse to become a full-time nurse at the Homeopathic after their extending her an offer. They made their disdain for her refusal clear, but she was looking out for #1, and worked at the JGH after completing an extra year studying psychiatric nursing at McGill. She eventually became a head nurse at the JGH, but eventually left to do industrial nursing and then left that to marry and have a family, including yours truly. My grandmother and uncle were wrong...she found work in the big city!

My raison d'être for telling that story was to point out the difficulties Jewish students had to endure just to study in the field of medicine, or any other profession for that matter. Most universities and teaching hospitals were notorious for their discriminatory policies against Jews and other minorities, by setting strict quotas. Other hospitals didn't accept Jews at all, like the then WASP nest at the Royal Victoria Hospital, St. Mary's and a host of others. Please realize I'm going back to the 1940s here, so don't anybody tell me about the 1970s or later! The JGH, at first, was a sort of affirmative action for Jewish doctors and nurses who faced terrible discrimination, but it was built mostly with Jewish community money as opposed to government funding so the Jewish community had every right to do this. In spite of SOME affirmative action, many on the medical staff were still not Jewish.

In the early 1970s, the Jewish Convalescent Hospital was built in Chomedey Laval. In 1964, after a 13-year hiatus from nursing to raise my big brother and me until I was old enough, my mother returned to nursing, working alternating weekends at first, and more later when inflation in the 1970s made it difficult to make ends meet. She became a relief nurse at the Jewish Convalescent when it was just a big house converted to a hospital on the Chomedey/Laval des Rapides border and before the much larger full-service facility was built. Again, this was a facility to offer kosher food and rabbinical chaplaincy services in-house (including a small synagogue), and private funding by the Jewish community was mostly what built it. Far more interestingly, my mother during her time there (22 years) was the ONLY JEWISH NURSE in the place. Some of the doctors were Jewish, but the majority were not. English was the primary language spoken there, but the facility is now all French!

There's your history lesson. Now for Chrétien and even Parasite to choose the JGH, that says something. With their high profiles, they could have balked at frequenting the JGH, but chose not to. Parasite said he was happy with how he was treated there (at least to the English media), even though Jews were one of his primary nemeses in his 1995 Referendum defeat. I haven't heard complaints from Chrétien, and if the author's story is accurate, he CHOSE the JGH. It goes to show, and I'm sure they both had absolutely NO trouble being served in French.

  6. Yes you know the racist language Nazis will really hate this video, but a previous comment is sadly correct. The majority of the staff are now metis (French) and sadly most are not fluent in English as they should be. So go out today language Nazis and spray paint some more Jewish symbols, go on with your hatred towards other languages and cultures, the word is getting out how racist “official Kebec” is.

I wonder if people really know what’s been going on in Quebec for the last several decades. Quebec = 5 decades wiping out the English language and culture with racist,anti-English language laws such as bill 22, 178, 101…Just a fact. Racism, bigotry, ethnic language cleansing and human rights violations alive and well in kebec.Kebec where the English, Scottish, Irish, United Empire Loyalists…built the province since 1763, where the Union Jack and Red Ensign flew until 1950. Again just the facts. This lie, this revisionist BS that Quebec is a French province and that Canada is bilingual is just that, an outright lie. 1 million people have been forced out of the province of Kebec (original native spelling) due to this type of hatred/lie/spin. While all this is going on in Quebec they are forcing the French language outside kebec in every province. Everything and anything the French demand, they are getting across this entire country. Its called bilingualism (another lie never clearly defined on purpose). What’s really going on?” First Quebec, then we take over the rest of the country, one step at a time…through bilingualism…”PT. “How to take over a country through bilingualism…” SD. The same thing is now going on outside Quebec. From the removal of our real flag in 1965...Let’s remove, revise, and lie about more of our real BNA history. Enough is enough... "Loyal She Began, Loyal She Remains." Go learn our proud, BNA and UEL history. These were the builders of our country since 1763,not this phony, revisionist lie, spin, nonsense, this bilingual, multicultural,2 founding nations, linguistic duality lie, spin, propaganda that we’ve been living with since Trudeau and Kebec forced this upon the nation. We’ve been part of the British Empire since 1763. Quebec, Montreal, is now just a racist, bigoted, xenophobic society. Show me i"m wrong, repeal the racist Bill 101 NOW.

Trifling over semantics, this is a typically evasive ploy used by the Franco-fascists. Call it what you will you petty little prick, what you do is elevate French above English in a country where both languages have equal status. You promote French and the expense of ‘the others’ and endorse political policies that attempt to suffocate the progress of any other language. Canadians do not want to live in or be neighbors with a province that is pro-French or anti-English. Your pathetic plight is self-imposed, self-pitying, narrow minded, short sighted, and ultimately self-destructive. You are a small fish in a big pond, and the wars you wage are unwinnable. When the ROC has had enough of your BS and closes the wallet, you will quickly learn how lost you are.

    After that...

Define "that". When will "that" time arrive where we can finally speak "the language we want" in Quebec? When will this "l'épanouissement de la société québécoise" finally happen? It seems to be taking a bloody long time, almost 40 years now. 40 years, and we're still dealing with the "too much English" bs every single day. Today, it's Sophie Durocher, (Richard Martineau's wife) complaining on her blog about "not enough French" at the last weekend's fashion show downtown Montreal.

  14. Thanks for the post and drawing attention to the video; it’s an uplifting but ultimately sad story because the Franco-freaks don’t want to work with ‘the others’ to create harmony and peace. They want to destroy and sever all links to decency. Of course a video like this will infuriate them; it illustrates all things they are not. The separatist will not stop until they have poisoned all that is good in Quebec. Again, the monstrous hypocrisy and contradictions of the Quebecois shine through. They want to see non-Franco institutions cleansed, but when they need help where do they run?

You’re like annoying flies buzzing around while someone is trying to watch the telly.

So how much longer will it be before you retreat back to the woodwork that you crawled out of in the 1970s? Your ideas haven't caught on in the mainstream. Time to accept it and pack it in.

You'll lead Canada straight into bankruptcy and balkanism, if Canadians don’t wake up. However, as the foul stench of the separatist’s ethnocentric dogma wafts across Canada, Canadians will probably take notice and eventually fight back. I doubt Canadians will let the Franco-supremacists turn all of Canada into an ethnically divided backwater. I remain hopeful that Canadians will have the courage to defend our common North American heritage, and stop the hostile advances of the French, whose declared aim is to dominate Canada. Good luck English brothers and sisters, we feel for you!

  17. The separatists have failed twice before and are afraid to try again for fear of failing again (even Marois won't sign on for a date if she is elected) . So, best they just try and be annoying. The threats are as empty as their heads and the politicians in Ottawa and the rest of the people of Canada should realize this and quit giving in to any further demands from Quebec. Seems to me anything good in Quebec was built by anglos and/or others as the Jewish hospital in the post suggests.

I must say, individuals like you who support the separatist cause tend to be very hostile towards other people, and from what I have read, you all say the same things as though you were instructed or educated to do so. What you say sounds dull and scripted, regardless of how articulate or cogent someone’s point is. You never have a logically rebuttal to anyone’s arguments, only harsh, dismissive words. I can see why your relations are so strained with the other members of your ailing society.

We don't need any lesson from people into bankruptcy.

Agreed; this is an area of expertise you have already mastered. Despite massive cash transfers from Canada to your province, you still mismanaged your financial affairs into a very precarious state. From the outside looking in, I would say your nationalist policies have created a social state you can’t afford to pay for yourself, and you rely on the people you hate (Canadians) to pay for it. Seriously, I can’t imagine that does much good for your collective esteem. The coarse you are on will lead to your financial ruin. Educate yourself and learn:

The racist, pure laine Quebecer sees what it wants to see and hears what it wants to hear. Simply put, not to bright at all. You remember that movie, Dumb and Dumber? Well they are writing another one in Quebec, they’ve been working on it for about 4 decades now. It’s called Dumb, Dumber, and Dumbest, featuring the pure laine Kebecios in all roles. Mississauga Guy here again! Not to worry. The rest of Canada (aka ROC) will wake up if Quebec's collective bellyaching becomes too costly. It's getting there, and this old hat is approaching 50 obnoxious years so eventually the fatigue will start to set in. If not, thankfully the number of "Old Stock" Quebecers (i.e., that ilk who are multigenerational white French-speaking Roman Catholics) is dwindling big-time. They USED TO make up 25% of the population, now it's around 22% and if the demographics go the way they have been, that will be about 18% of the population within a generation. The rest of Quebec will be made up of new mostly French-speaking immigrants who will not succumb to this language stupidity because they likely come from multilingual situations and know America rules and English carries more weight and population than French.

At 18% of the population, they won't have the clout they're already losing and ha ha ha ha ha, English will rule, and if Quebec wants to separate and take their debt with them, I DARE them to.

Over 10% of government employees now make over 100 thousand yearly. In the private sector the number is under 2%. Nice eh? Look to Greece and Quebec, this is where Canada is headed if we don’t stop equalization and get spending and government growth under control. This tax and spend, union, socialist, big government, social engineering that has been destroying this country has got to stop. Yes, it has left Quebec and has been spreading throughout the rest of the country since the 1960”s, that’s right over 4 decades of massive government growth, massive government hiring, skyrocketing government salaries and more and more debt. Go check the stats for yourself. Thanks Trudeau, Tanks kebec.

The Liberals and Conservatives have spent the last few decades destroying Ontario and Canada’s economy, its English speaking history and culture, not to mention the racism, bigotry, ethnic language cleansing and human rights violations going on in Quebec, a la bills 22, 178, 101…What are they really up to? “First Quebec, then we take over the rest of the country, one step at a time…through bilingualism…” PT, “How to take over a country through bilingualism…” SD. That’s what’s really going on. Wake up, people! High taxes, green fees, user fees, HST, high government salaries, social engineering - expensive forced bilingual and multicultural policies (only outside Quebec of course), greedy unions controlling just about everything, new programs and more government departments yearly, more government empire building, the size and growth of government is out of control!!!

Honestly, when was the last time you heard of a politician talk about downsizing government, eliminating waste, a hiring freeze, a salary cap, eliminating debt not just reducing it a little, cutting back on things…???

  50. "Its all about greed, greed and more greed, just follow the money."

For a good analysis of this I would refer all to read "Fearful Symmetry" by Brain Crowley. Pay specific attention to the chapters regarding subsidies to Quebec. It might well be too late to alter the direction we are moving. In which case, Canada will become a third world country a great deal in part to Quebec and the central Government in Ottawa. Unfortunate, it was a great country.
