The Truckers are Right About Covid

I know it's hard to change positions on a deeply held idea or position but is there anything I can say that would change your mind regarding your absolute belief and faith in vaccines, masks, social distancing and lock-downs?

If there's no argument, no matter how compelling that will nudge you off your position then respectfully stop reading.
However, if you are open to evaluating the evolving facts that have a direct bearing on our continued Covid policy I encourage you to read on.

One of the things little known about the highly effective Israeli military is its policy of retiring its leadership early, opting for new blood in the higher ranks on an ongoing basis. It is a policy meant to breathe new ideas and stratagems in the face of evolving threats, the evolving geopolitical situation and technological advances and of course an updated analysis of the ever-changing potential threat by adversaries.
In other words, the Israelis don't want generals who will fight the next battle with tools and policies borne in the past.
Such is the case of our political leaders in both Ottawa and the provinces who are ignoring the reality of the new and evolving Covid threat.
There was a convincing argument for the past policy of masking, isolating and certainly vaccinating but in the new world of Omicron, most of these weapons are ineffective and costly, both to the mental well-being of us all and to the economy itself which is being ravaged.

The doctrine was based on the notion that vaccines, masking, isolation, social distancing and curfews were necessary to stop or slow down the spread of Covid so that our hospitals could cope.

It is that supposition that is now called into question because with Omicron these measures are largely ineffective.

Those vaccinated are as likely to contract the highly contagious Omicron as those unvaccinated. While it is true that those vaccinated who contract Omicron will be less sick and tax the health system less, the benefits of vaccination are almost exclusively reserved for those who get the jab.
Those who refuse to vaccinate hurt themselves and themselves alone.
Like smokers and the obese who are responsible for the health issues related to their failure to exercise good judgment, the un-jabbed are no different and deserve no more scorn from our politicians and certainly should not be subject to abuse.

The Prime Minister has labelled those who disagree with his Covid policy as people with unacceptable views, a thoroughly arrogant and stupid statement to make even if it was true.
But it's not.

Rangers play before a full house while Habs play to an empty house
Other countries like Sweden and the United States have never adopted the draconian measures that we have employed here and others like the United Kingdom, Israel and Denmark are giving up on sanitary measures because they are no longer defensible.

Would Trudeau label the leaders of these countries as holding 'unacceptable' views?'

I read a recent interview with Israel's version of Dr. Faucci who admitted candidly that vaccine passports no longer provide any societal health benefits and are only useful in that they are coercing the unvaxxed to get the jab through intimidation.

The policies that our federal government and the provinces continue to pursue are outdated, ineffective and utterly devastating to our mental health and our economy to boot.

I'm not minimizing the danger of Covid, but am offering a realistic analysis of the necessity and effectiveness of our countermeasures.

Politicians continue to vilify the unvaccinated and those vocally opposed to sanitary measures because scapegoating this small minority takes the focus off the reality that the mess we are in is largely because our vastly inefficient and underfunded health system could not cope with a  surge in patients.
For want of hospital capacity, our entire economy was destroyed, saddling future generations with crippling debt.

It is this sad fact that has politicians casting blame on the unvaxxed like a sleight-of-hand magician wishing us to shift our view away.

For time immemorial leaders have blamed vulnerable and unpopular minorities for their own mistakes and shortcomings because it was and remains an effective tool.
Most of us are okay with the fact that those unvaccinated can't go into a liquor store to buy booze that is being sold by clerks who don't have to be vaccinated?
Why is this?
It is because we have been encouraged by politicians to hate.
Because we have been brainwashed into blaming a minority for the pandemic, we shift our scrutiny away from those truly responsible for the mismanagement of our health system. Surely a year into the pandemic the government could have implemented an emergency plan to substantially boost temporary hospital capacity. The cost involved pales in comparison to the social and economic losses inflicted upon society.
Have our politicians never seen an episode of M*A*S*H?

The citizens of Canada and Quebec have rallied to the vaccine in unprecedented numbers that results in us being one of the most vaccinated peoples of the world, yet the government tells us that the few remaining unvaxxed are to blame for the continued calamity.

As for the unvaxxed truckers, they are the last to be a threat to us.
They drive alone in their trucks for days upon days and when they arrive at their destination don't even unload their trucks themselves.
Their contact with others is more limited than perhaps any occupation I can think of. The chances of an unvaccinated long-haul driver passing on Covid are drastically less than a vaccinated office worker.
For Trudeau to take a stand on a vaccination mandate for truckers is about politics and not health.

Yes, the unvaccinated pose a burden on our health system, but blaming them for the continued pandemic is unfair and disingenuous.
It is time to admit that the landscape has changed and that sanitary measures and vaccines aren't effective in stopping the spread.

We need to learn to live with the virus.
Those who are most vulnerable must take their own precautions while respecting the idea that society cannot shut down forever.

It's time for us to reevaluate, something Trudeau and the old guard are deathly afraid to do because in their eyes, abandoning past policies is an admission of failure.

As for you....
Are you willing to honestly and independently reevaluate the measure in place and decide for yourself whether we are not just fighting the pandemic with an outdated and ineffective war plan, one conceived in a bygone era and promoted by neanderthal politicians?

  1. Considering the g-d-awful year the Habs are having, probably will end up their worst year in their 113-year history (they only earned 33 points in 48 games back in 1939-40, a winning percentage of.344). With 23 points in 44 games, their current winning percentage is .261, and that can't properly be compared to the era that ended when ties were no longer tolerated, or at least a bonus point was awarded if an OT loss ended in a win before the shootout was introduced. If games today ended in ties at the end of 60 minutes, their record would likely be even worse today.

In summary, it's just as well nobody gets to attend the games. Who wants to pay fortunes of money to watch a team tantamount to Charlie Brown's all-stars? The last two games I watched were 7-2 blowouts by the opposition. They're not even worth watching on TV anymore. Endless disappointment. A totally inept team! Like "French Canadians" and especially the one who nose-dove the team into the ground.

Bergevin is a loser, Le-go is a loser, his party and minions are losers and now the once-glorious Habs are a big fat loser team in a big, fat loser state. Back in that disastrous season, 1939-40, Senator Donat Raymond was the "French Canadian" loser in charge of that hapless loser team. Proof posItive Quebec is a loser state because the hapless majority making up most of its population are like the state - LOSERS!

Let French Quebec separate and let Montreal and the area leading to Ontario between the St. Lawrence and Ottawa Rivers partition. The best and the brightest live within that area--primarily west of The Main to Ste-Anne-de Bellevue, but let those in Eastern Montreal, Vaudreuil and Soulange be lucky enough to be included (and, well, there is Hudson and St-Leonard!)

  2. Trudeau is a loser, he comes from a loser state, and it was his grandfather who was that rare Francophone gold nugget that established enough money to keep the family from not having to have real jobs. Hi mother was a mental case whom I saw on the Mike Douglas show in the CBS studio back in May 1979 who was on some kind of cheap drugs that made her make a total ass of herself on North American TV in front of millions.

I sat in the audience seething hotter than a blast furnace! Thankfully, they taped for over the 90 minute allotment the show is given when the final product was presented! She made all Canadians look like asses.

  3. Wow Philip am I happy you wrote this piece. You literally took the words out of my mouth. I agree 100 percent with you and the truckers. I think the two pieces you wrote about COVID are among your most important. The first one where you clearly mentioned we needed to protect the vulnerable and let the rest of us get on with lives and now this one showing the futility of all these senseless mandates.

The real issue from day 1 was the pathetic state of our health care system. Governments have let our health care system crumble over the past 35 years. And the blowing of an additional 500-800 billion dollars in two years is certainly not going to help. Imagine what we could have done with a fraction of the additional hundreds of billions we added to the debt. Instead we paid people to do nothig and many people abused this system. I know for a fact of at least 25 young people who chose not to work because of the free money. And at the same time the poor small business owners were shut down all the time and then on top of it could not find any workers or had to pay them a lot more. The constant focus on only COVID deaths and hospitalizations with little to no concern or attention on the thousands of deaths, injuries caused by the lockdowns themselves.

How many suicides, depressions, anxiety issues, drug overdoses, domestic abuses, cancelled surgeries and other important treatments. As you say its amazing the government with all the money they spend was unable to add additional beds, hire more workers and pay them more, and keep COVID out of the nursing homes. One would think with 500-800 billion dollars you could literally do anything and we should have been able to protect the vulnerable much better and let 80 percent of the rest of society more or less get on with life. We did neither..we didnt protect the vulnerable and we ruined the lives of many of the other 80 percent.

Now we have the Liberals and the mass media demonizing thousands of protesters because of a few bad apples. Yes there are some nutcases in that movement but the vast majority of the protesters are hard workiAng decent and simple Canadians who are fed up with the government ordering them around. I hope that most Canadians can see through the CBC/CTV news lies and misinformation but frankly think it will be a tough slog. As I expected the media and the Liberals are already going on and on about the 3 Nazi flags seen there, and some trucks parked on the war memorial instead of the overall good behaviour of 99 percent of the rest of the protesters.
Of course the Liberals are trapped..they have to condemn these people otherwise admit to their own dismal failures.

    1. Complicated, you fool! This B.S. with the hospitals has been going on almost since Medicare was introduced to Quebec. My late mother, G-d rest her soul, was a nurse before and after medicare came out. There have been battles with the nurses going back to the mid-70s, so screw 35 years, it's been 50 years. Haven't you learned that in Quebec language issues are the be-all and end-all?

Despite the billions upon billions upon billions of dollars going to Quebec in equalization payments going back to 1957, courtesy of Ontario and Alberta, Quebec has always found ways to piss that fortune of money against a wall. Probably the only good thing they did with the money was set up subsidized daycare that welfare bums who want to stay home, smoke and watch TV can send their kids there. Fortunately too, there were those living on tawdry, sub-living wages who could take advantage of the daycares, Logirente (a rent subsidy) and PWA (Parental Wage Assistance). Too bad, though, they also pissed money down black holes, like Asbestos Corp., Sidbec, Quebecair and other loser state-run enterprises.

Only Quebec can come up with curfews with ridiculous fines, but these are just reminders of why Quebec is a loser state. The hockey team is proof in the pudding. So was the long-gone Major League Baseball team!

    2. Mr.Sauga..God I wish there was some diversity in the comments section. You are so repetitive and tedious with your rants. This piece by Philip had next to nothing to do about Quebec and seperatists and you still find a way to focus all your energy on that. Its not just Quebec that has done a poor job of dealing with COVID..most other provinces have been pretty dismal too. Ontario has little to be proud of nor does Alberta. I think BC seems to have the most competent health official who has brilliantly struck the right balance between measures and no measures.

You, Mr.Sauga, are a bitter old man who just spews constant hate in one direction. Philip could write an article about how pretty the flowers are in May and you would come on here and start attackng the seperatists about god knows what.

Nobody reading this blog likes the seperation movement. I dislike the nationalism that Legault promotes. We have heard countless stories of how you and your family were screwed by the seperatists back in the 1970s and before. Obvously you have a massive chip on your shoulder that gets worse with age but can you try and write something here with a bit of a different perspective.

    3. Complicated, would you rather Mr. Sauga bottle up all of that anger and, instead of channeling it through the outlet of this comments section, explode in one big going-postal episode that we all read about on the front page?

No, this is a healthy outlet through which he can harmlessly vent.

      Spew on, Mr. Sauga.

Next blog post could be about a flower arrangement event hosted in Quebec and he will still produce a generic 5 paragraph rant about the racist Quebec.

"would you rather Mr. Sauga bottle up all of that anger and, instead of channeling it through the outlet of this comments section, explode in one big going-postal episode that we all read about on the front page?"

Sure, there will be a going postal episode if he doesn't channel his anger on this blog. This blog is like therapy for him.

      Facepalm.

  4. First of all, thanks for being so accommodating, Tony K. I confess that at least in part, writing comments, even if to some they seem repetitive, are therapeutic for me. More importantly, I find it reprehensible that the minorities in Quebec are reacting far too complacently. Minorities pay their tax, and it was once stated on TV during a Quebec election, by Suburban editor Beryl Wajsman, that the minorities make up 20% of the Quebec population, yet contribute about 40% to the Quebec tax base. Apparently this has subsequently been called a misstatement, or perhaps completely untrue. I, however, am of the opinion that Mr. Wajsman is at least somewhat right. Most of the welfare recipients live in the outer reaches of Quebec, or in rural areas. About half of Quebec homes are still heated with firewood. FIREWOOD? If one lives in the bush, or is otherwise off the grid, that's understandable, but HALF the population? Stringent laws that favour tenants are because there is a disproportionate number of Francophones who are tenants compared to the minorities, so why not pick on the minorities?

Having been born, raised and educated in Quebec, if I'm not a Quebecker, what am I? It's not as if Quebec is the first political jurisdiction(notice I don't call Quebec a country?) to alienate certain people, especially its minorities, but I like to think as Canadians, we're better people. Perhaps that's arrogant and shortsighted of me, but we're supposed to be a first nation country (albeit with a second nation public transportation infrastructure)!

Interesting how truck drivers and unwanted s--t disturbers are vehemently protesting, yet minorities in Quebec don't do the same when their rights are being relegated to a lower level. If nothing else, I'm somewhat hoping I can rile up the minorities to do something about their lowly plight.
    !!
Complicated, yes, I aim bitter that too many of my hard-earned tax dollars paid in Ontario over the years have been put forward to an undeserving Quebec that only considers Canada as good as the last dollar it puts into equalization payments and other federal programs, but I'm not old!

As for Kent Hughes, the latest sucker to take the job as GM of the Canadiens, notice how, despite being born in Quebec (albeit the West Island), there are those who don't consider him a "real" Quebecker notwithstanding he speaks French. WTF? What is the problem now? Bill 22 came out almost a half century ago, if was further fortified with Bill 101 a mere three years later forcing French down the throats of us minorities to speak it, brought on even more stringent legislation mere months ago, and now the hockey club hires a fellow who speaks it, and the alienation goes on! HE SPEAKS FRENCH! I guess the problem now is not just forcing French even further down the bodies of minorities, but to speak it with the same inferior accent that most Québécois speak Joual, or Quebecspeak, or whatever the hell you want to call it. ENOUGH, I SAY! ENOUGH!. Complicated, if you want to just sit there with your thumb up your rectum while the government and its minions continue to alienate you, more power to you!

Yes Mr Sauga. I was watching footage of truck convoy supporters on overpasses on the Trans Canada of the West Island and Riguad. There was quite a bit of enthusiasm. I assumed they were mostly anglo supporters as the signs were bilingual or English. I don't remember seeing that kind of enthusiasm for protesting against bill 101, supporting Balarama Holness', the elimination of the notwithstanding clause, or even the lack of internet privacy rights.

  5. OK, now onto the truck protest, so I hope this will satisfy you, Complicated.

Now it has been eight full days that the protest has started, and at least in Ottawa it looks as if it's not going to end. Toronto got way ahead in front of the situation, and after just two days much of the hubbub has already been resolved. The areas that had to be blockaded to prevent the helter skelter Ottawa is still going through was proactively averted in Toronto. Score one for Toronto! Farmers came with their tractors from neighbouring communities on Saturday, left today as they're smart enough to let their complaints be known, but go back to tend their farms.

In fairness, some of the truckers protesting have merit, but it has come to the point where, like too many protests that happen today and in recent years, there are those who have no agenda but to wreak havoc, promote anarchy, chaos, destruction and hateful racism while using the genuine protesters as a front for their destructive agenda.

WTF were the Trump and confederate flags there for? What was the KKK there for, and those wearing facsimile gold Stars of David Jews were berated for as the scapegoats of the Holocaust? They had ZERO to do with the truckers' reasons for being there! Did Americans show simply up to stir the s--t? Let them fight their own damn battles on their own damn land!

All this OK with you, Complicated Fool?

    1. Ah Mr. Sauga, It's been a few years since I looked in on No Dogs, but I see little has changed. The sun rises in the east, Liberals are still in power, and Sauga is still spewing vitriol. You're one of the sad blowhards who use internet anonymity to be obnoxious in a way that you would never have the nerve to, face-to-face. I'd ask who peed on your cornflakes this morning, but I suspect, since you're always in the same mood, that it's you, and you do it as part of your morning ritual. Try civility, just to see if you can. It might make your comments more interesting.

Why don't you go back a few commentaries and see what's changed? In any case, Mr. Berlach has never censured my comments so they must be reasonable. That you don't like my opinions doesn't mean one iota to me one way or the other. Oh, another certainty for you: Montreal will enjoy a total solar eclipse on Monday, April 8, 2024...if the skies are clear. I'll probably have lots to say between now and that date, maybe some my comments will be predictable...maybe not. I may have even more to write between then and beyond. Happy reading.

  6. "Mr. Berlach has never censured my comments so they must be reasonable." That's an interesting leap of logic there, Sauga. Your comments not being egregious, doesn't automatically mean they're reasonable. Also, I never said I don't like your opinions. Like the comments of other contributors, some I agree with, and some I don't. What I find tiresome is your childish name-calling (calling Complicated a fool in this case, apparently for having the nerve to have an opinion that you disagree with). Having to resort to that devalues any argument you have to put forth. It's very disappointing that, after all this time, you still resort to it.
