And I think the disagreement comes from a lack of understanding of Canadian culture. Some of this is covered in the assimilation post elsewhere in this thread, but to repeat, for most Canadians a big part of their culture is the way it can adapt and co-exist. Canada is not America. When those million Québécois moved to America they lost their culture but those who remained in Canada did not.

Most Canadians are very proud of this and want it to continue. They see the Charter as making Quebec more like America and it's forced assimilation less like Canada, and less like Québec has been for most of its history.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7963035472241877292.post-80026197434998691672014-03-07T11:44:15.658-05:002014-03-07T11:44:15.658-05:00There should be no doubt that the culture must be ...There should be no doubt that the culture must be maintained. The question is, how diverse is that culture? It has been a long, long time since the culture of Quebec was purely French (and Catholic). Sure, French is the majority and that needs to be maintained, but it's not exclusive.

So, would an independent Quebec want to be like New England, in which everyone who moves there loses their culture, or like Quebec (and Canada) has been historically where cultures can co-exist?

Most Canadians are proud of the fact that our country is not like New England and that the Quebec culture didn't disappear here the way it did for the people who moved there.

Quebec should be proud of it's Scottish, Irish, Jewish, Italian, Greek culture (but not the English, screw them, nobody likes the English ;)).

It would only take only a minor change to the laws to allow for this and it would have no affect on assimilation.
Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7963035472241877292.post-45523192363320886082014-03-07T11:22:19.288-05:002014-03-07T11:22:19.288-05:00Here's yr answer:
