First...Complicated, I have to say I agree with ED.

First, let's all keep in mind that all these people are politicians. They aren't here to help "the people", this isn't the fantasy world that many people would like it to be.

You seem to have forgotten how things were during the last 10 or so years of separatist rule. When you compare that to Jean Charest's liberals over the past 10 years, there is a very big difference.
I'm not sure how you can claim that the liberals let infrastructures crumble.. The reason our infrastructures are in the state they are today is because the previous PQ government invested a big 0$ in the province. Not only did they not invest, they cut everything, from healthcare to education. All these problems we see today are directly caused by the last PQ government, Parizeau, Landry and Bouchard. I'm guessing you don't remember Bouchard's obsession with a 0 deficit, which led Mme Marois to send a huge amount of doctors, nurses and teachers to an early retirement...

The liberals actually invested a lot in infrastructures. When was the last time you had seen a bridge built in this province? Or a new highway? If you've only been here for 12 years, I can answer that for you: never, before the liberals.
And by the way, don't expect to see any more large projects while the PQ is in power.

You also speak of "corruption", like all the brainwashed separatists. I'm still waiting for that damning evidence against the liberal party in the Charbonneau Commission. So far, nothing major.. Of course once again, they are politicians, some corruption is to be expected at every level. Honesty is not a politicians first priority. If you want to talk about corruption, lets talk about Pauline Marois' husband, or their castle on Ile Bizard.

You can support the CAQ if you want, you think they will be better than the liberals? A bunch of ex-separatists who obviously don't have much conviction, and who can barely speak english? I think Cutie003 is right, I wouldn't be surprised to see a CAQ / PQ coalition come together if ever they got to power.

Many of you claim the liberals aren't supporting anglophones and their rights.. Politicians need the support of the largest percentage of the population, and unfortunately that means catering to the french before the english. It's only logical. No political party is going to commit suicide by standing up for anglos against the french majority, that would just be dumb and pointless.

I agree with ED, the liberals are our only chance, for now. The CAQ is just a bunch of separatists in sheep's clothing, and even if they aren't, I wouldn't be able to trust someone who can switch sides so easily.
Quebecker of Tree Stumpnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7963035472241877292.post-31153841083694496582013-02-25T10:08:50.988-05:002013-02-25T10:08:50.988-05:00FROM ED

Just to set the record straight..I wrote a lengthy piece last year in response to EDS FALSE information on the vote splitting. If you look riding by riding in the last election it was the Liberal vote which allowed the PQ to win the last election. It was the CAQ that finished second in many more ridings than the Liberals..hence it was the stubborn Liberal vote which gave the PQ the victory. In fact if the CAQ had won just 5 more ridings then the Liberals would have actually won a slim minority. The CAQ were very very close in at least 4 ridings to winning..another few thousand votes more for the CAQ and they would have done it.

So the great irony is that the Liberal vote did their own party in. It is the CAQ that was much more competitive outside of Montreal not the Liberals. Anyone who doesnt believe me please check out the riding by riding results. You will also note that the CAQ was the party which was totally robbed of seats based on our ancient and useless first past the post system..the CAQ had 27 percent of the vote..they should have about 34 seats based on percentage of the vote..they only have 19.

So please ED just state the facts and stop twisting them to suit your view of things. You and many older anglos and older francos continue to support a party that has proven time in and time out to be corrupt, arrogant, incompetent, and dishonest. I dont know what it is..but the older generations seem to be conditioned to vote for the same party their entire lives..I have seen this behaviour over and over..people who have been voting Liberal for the past 50 years..or voting Conservative or whatever. Perhaps in the older generation its seen as weak to change your mind even when the facts overwhelmingly support doing just that.

This stubborness actually sends the exact wrong message to a party like the Liberals. It sends them the message that they can treat the anglophone population like dirt and they dont need to do anything to get our vote. So in effect you create a monster..a party that doesnt have to work one iota to get our vote..that can be as incompetent and immoral as possible and they will still get our vote. Think about how children raised this way turn out. complicatednoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7963035472241877292.post-89288335062716269972013-02-24T23:55:51.180-05:002013-02-24T23:55:51.180-05:00@jean racotte

I like to live dangerously in Quebec: I like my pasta al dente. As we found out this week it’s not really something that is supposed to be written on a menu in ristorantes in Quebec. The folks over at Buonanotte were horrified to find they were under investigation for daring to put some Italian on their menu. My guess is most right-thinking people won’t get their noodles in a knot over this.

But it’s a very different matter for a bureaucrat working for the language cops, a bureaucrat with obviously far too much time on his hands. The language office kind of reminds of that old Monty Python skit: The Ministry of Silly Walks. The Ministry is the place where government employees basically are paid to walk silly and to award grants to citizens who can come up with, well, new silly walks. Does that remind you of anything? Like perhaps our language office?

If they want to make Quebec the laughingstock of the world, they are doing a pretty good job. What’s next on the list for these people? English muffins, souvlakis, shish-taouk, fish and chips? (Actually, fish and chips has already been deemed illegal.) Will they even target that sacred symbol of fast food in Quebec, the exalted “hot dog.” I think even ordering “deux steamés” would be heresy in their eyes.

It’s quite clear that the government and the language zealots are in denial, denial that Montreal is a bilingual city. We – Anglophones -- are treated worse than children sometimes. Non-francophone taxpayers should be neither seen nor heard, just keep the tax money coming in,

The OQLF just gets dumber and dumber and perhaps we should just laugh it off, but the subtext is not amusing. You see under Bill 14, language inspectors will be given more power, extraordinary powers to search and seize. More power to hunt down anything English. Anglos have become sport. They love squeezing us until we cry uncle, attacking door signs posted by businesses in NDG to bike shops in the Plateau that dare to post English signs.

Is that the kind of society we truly want to live in? A society where everything is seen through the optics of language and the perceived threat to French purity?

There is much to fear with the PQ’s new legislation. It is designed not so much to bolster French but to once again diminish us. Give me the Ministry of Silly Walks any time. Truly it is funnier.
R.Shttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16447818623561947563noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7963035472241877292.post-10001906042147080682013-02-24T19:47:05.104-05:002013-02-24T19:47:05.104-05:00The first paragraph in my last post should have ap...The first paragraph in my last post should have appeared in quotations.Durhamnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7963035472241877292.post-84996503560356624932013-02-24T19:42:25.419-05:002013-02-24T19:42:25.419-05:00@ Gros Bons Sens,

I just had to translate it for non-francophones, especially those outside Quebec, so they can see for themselves the level of utter pettiness that we have to deal with on a daily basis here in order for the Quebec government to enforce its French supremacy.

Yves Boisvert (La Presse): From steak to WC

An OQLF inspector asked Maurice Holder, the owner of the brewery that bears his name, to remove the "WC" sign from his restroom door, even though the expression is widespread in France.

Madam Inspector of the Quebec Office of the French Language was good-looking and exquisitely polite. She had even advised of her upcoming visit to the owner of the Brasserie Holder. The restaurant, modelled on a typical Parisian brasserie, is one of the busiest in Old Montreal. Maurice Holder, the owner, was not particularly nervous. The work is done in French, signs are in French, in short, it would be a routine visit just as one would expect from the Fire Department.

However, Madam the Very Nice Inspector OQLF winced right off the bat: the employee telephone had "hold" and "redial" buttons.

“You will have to hide that, monsieur.”

Maurice Holder found her decision rather comical, but so far he had no problem that a piece of masking tape – forgive me, “ruban gommé” – couldn’t fix.

In the kitchen, Madam Inspector was irritated to notice that the microwave oven had an "ON / OFF" button.

“Cover that for me, please.”
“Yes, Madam Inspector ...”

Then we review the work tools. Ah-hah! The safety warnings on the mixer are in English! The case was becoming more serious ...

“Do hide that text.”

Maurice Holder starts getting hot under the collar, but he thought about inspectors similarly as he did of customs agents: better to take a deep breath and obey their instructions. Thus, he docilely takes a small piece of tape and sticks it on the side of the mixer.

I hope that you will be reassured, ladies and gentlemen, to know that the Quebec Office of the French Language ensures that the nation’s kitchen staff is not exposed to impure words, even under the false pretense of safety.

Madam Inspector scans the mixer covered with white tape with a skeptical eye.

“You can still see the words through it!”

Maurice Holder applies a second layer of tape (and another one on his mouth).

Then, they approached the stoves and that was where Madam Inspector was introduced to chef Simon Laplante. The chef has a small board on which he writes his grocery list: salad, eggs, sugar, steak ...

“Steak!”

The inspector was shocked. One is not allowed to write the word "steak" in a kitchen where the Charter to the French Language applies. Apparently, one must use "bifteck." You should try that one with the waiter the next time you order a “steak-frites” in Paris: "I would prefer it if you would say bifteck."
