No, I realize that, but like many Frenc...@ Student

No, I realize that, but like many French Canadians, I'm not convinced that the only way to gain freedom is through the 19th century idea of nationalism and statism.

I understand the desire for freedom and for the perseverance of culture. It's funny, it didn't really hit home for me until I was in my 30s and I moved out of Quebec and lived for the first time completely in English. At first the difference was huge and seemed to be in every aspect of life.

But over time that wore off and I started to see more problems when people separate themselves. Living and working together is hard, but I think worth it. It's a matter of finding the right level of "independence," for the world we live in now and for the future.

I don't think France is any less French or The Netherlands any less Dutch because they are part of the EU.

I do agree that by a hundred years into it's life the British North America Act was outdated and needed to be rewritten. Canada was so different by then. It sounded like a shock when Rêne Levesque first suggested new terms and offered sovereignty-association but in the intervening years pretty much everything he suggested then has come to pass and we're living with it. I think the entire country benefitted from the conversation Quebec started.

But do we need another step to full independence? Maybe we are almost as different now from 1960 that we were from 1867 to 1960. If a referendum passes there will be negotiations and trade agreements and all kinds of new deals (with Canada, the USA and the rest of the world). On the surface things might look a little different, but today it looks like Brian Mulrony and his cronies will still be in the thick of it.

I'm not convinced that "independence" is what's needed in 2014. I guess it depends what deals get negotiated.

- Jay

Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7963035472241877292.post-74264002139744889672014-03-12T10:14:50.764-04:002014-03-12T10:14:50.764-04:00There is the theory out there on social media that...There is the theory out there on social media that Peladope, Mulroney and Harper are working together to ensure that Justin doesn't get into power during the next federal election. Money makes the world go round right? If PKP got involved there is pay deal at the end of the rainbow. Regardless of who wins, I keep repeating that Montreal needs to find it's way out of the economic tsunami that quebec has been and that Montreal has paid for. Montreal needs to understand it has to opt out, if it will ever stand any chance of economic recovery. Also, it would appear that more people than we think read this blog, on the PQ side, I mean. I find it interesting how the PQ is also on some kind of simultaneous campaign to gain favor with Montrealers in particular. Why is it that all of a sudden, they're trying to remind Montrealers of all the good things the PQ has done for them apparently? The Minister for Anglo Montreal appears to be counting us with this..."see what we've done for you guys, the super hospital ..bla bla...? WHAT A JOKE! After running us into the poor house, they're showing us the new lamp in the living room. Yes, I agree, the lampshade is démodé, let's get rid of it, AND LET'S GET RID OF YOU, also démodé.

28,0000 people left in the first nine months of 2013, under the PQ (lack of) Leadership, I don't want to imagine what this has done to our tax-paying base, that should make the Guinness book of world records. When you elect a government and it does this poorly, is this reckless and negligent, the electorate should have some recourse to hold said government accountable and I don't just mean .... Is it possible that Harper has made some sort of behind the scenes deal with Peladeau to infiltrate the PQ? His company just got a bunch of wireless licenses across Canada..Sun News has always been pro-Harper..maybe there is more here than meets the eye.

It just doesnt quite add up to me that out of the blue he decides to run for the PQ..especially after he swore he wouldnt not that long ago.
He is a businessman..a negotiator..he does deals..maybe Harper has promised him some other help if he gets in the PQ and sabotages the party. I honestly dont think Peladeau is going to help the PQ..all the union people hate the guy hence the PQ will lose a lot of their traditional votes to Quebec Solidaire..perhaps enough to split the left vote and allow the Libs to win a bunch of ridings.

Or the PQ wins and Peladeau takes over but somehow marches to Harpers requests...what do you all think?complicatednoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7963035472241877292.post-50927924839993475932014-03-12T02:32:10.029-04:002014-03-12T02:32:10.029-04:00https://www.facebook.com/putbacktheflag/photos/np....https://www.facebook.com/putbacktheflag/photos/np.208283512.644982232/473144899479560/

“A vintage poster is banned in Quebec… merci, OQLF”

Where in the world does a business owner get threatened with fines for having a vintage poster?
