Pierre-Karl Péladeau Taking Over PQ Reins

Pierre-Karl Péladeau....Eyes firmly on the Premier Prize
I once met a leasing agent at a trade show where she introduced  me to her new young assistant, whose odd but familiar second name, piqued my interest.

Later on I bumped into the agent again, this time without the assistant in tow and asked if the young lady was indeed the daughter of the owner of the company.

"Yes she is" answered the agent sardonically, " I didn't exactly have a choice in taking her on."
To which I inquired of her rather cruelly, (I wasn't a big fan) how it felt to be training her replacement!

And so when Pierre-Karl Péladeau was introduced by Pauline Marois as a PQ candidate in the upcoming election, she was in fact introducing her successor, the only question remaining is how and when that transformation will take place.

Why Pauline would embark on such a course of action, letting an overpowering rival into the party, one she cannot hope to best in any type of leadership fight is another aspect to be considered, because as bad and incompetent she is as a Premier, as a political operator, she is unrivalled.

But first lets review;

Pierre-Karl Péladeau swore up and down over the last year and as recently as last month that he would not be running in the provincial election as a PQ candidate.
But back in December the decidedly lightweight online journal, The Prince Arthur Herald reported that this was not true, scooping everyone when it reported definitively that Péladeau would run in the election and even had correctly predicted the riding in which he was going to run, St. Jerome.
"The Prince Arthur Herald’s French news team has learned that Pierre- Karl Peladeau will most likely run under the PQ banner in the riding of Saint- Jerome. A PQ source familiar with the case confirmed the rumour."  Link
An assertion that Péladeau, through a spokesman, denied vehemently.
"The rumor is totally false, reacted  Quebecor spokesman, Martin Tremblay. Pierre Karl had already denied this rumour two months or so ago, in Quebec . And he used  strong enough words to deny that there isn't any question that he will go into politics."
Quebecor  even felt the need to publish a retraction on his Twitter account, anxious to leave no room for alternative interpretation. "Pierre Karl Peladeau has no intention to stand for election. The rumor @PArthurHerald is totally false, "
Hmmm... So much for the truth.
So lets not fall for the malarkey that Péladeau just changed his mind recently deciding to throw his hat in the ring on a lark, clearly, he was on a track from the very beginning.

Ever since Marois made him chairman of Hydro-Quebec, Péladeau has steadfastly denied all rumours that he had political aspirations and so in light of events, it is reasonable to wonder just how trustworthy and honest he really is, misleading us as to his intention so nakedly, a sad precursor to what we can expect of Péladeau as a leader.

Julie Snyder...Excess baggage on voyage to Premiership
Clearly his resignation from Quebecor and his dumping of his wife Julie Snyder in January, were housecleaning events, clearing the track and leading up to this announcement.
But putting all this aside, one has to ask why Marois, an old political warhorse would make a bargain with the devil, setting the fox into the chicken coop she oversees.
It is only a question of time before Péladeau is given the keys to or grabs the reins of power, clearly he isn't a man ready to play second fiddle and certainly not to someone as incompetent as Pauline Marois.

Should Marois win her majority, Péladeau will become more than her de facto deputy premier, he will no doubt  fill the role of Lord Protector, wielding the real power behind the throne, eventually taking over completely when Pauline has played out her fantasy and retires into the sunset, having fulfilled her lifetime ambition. (being Premier, that is)
I assume that is the plan that Pauline has signed off on, willing to play the role of titular head of state, enjoying the trappings of office while leaving the real work to her new hatchet man.

I can only chuckle at the thought of the hard-nosed, capable and pragmatic Péladeau sitting around the cabinet table and entertaining the idiotic ideas and notions of the PQ idiot-ministers.
How that will play out leaves me wondering, Péladeau doesn't suffer fools easily and there are plenty of fools among his PQ colleagues.
I'm sure that a lot of ministers are quaking in their boots right now at the thought of Péladeau's arrival, but alas, that is the stuff of another post.

Péladeau is a one man show who has ruled Quebecor with an iron fist, successfully smashing unions at his newspapers and this with a malicious and sadistic vengeance, a viciously nasty battle which he enjoyed like a disturbed child pulling wings off a fly.
He is no saviour to the PQ's unionized base or entitled masses, that much is for sure!
His candidacy was roundly condemned Sunday by the FTQ,  Quebec's largest union, as a "catastrophe" for working men and women in Quebec.
"He is probably one of the worst employers that Quebec has ever known," the FTQ said in a news release, citing Péladeau's history of lockouts.
For his potential opponents, both within and without the PQ, I can only warn them that this guy plays super rough, the likes of which ordinary politicians have never seen.
I'm reminded of the old aphorism that reminds us that one should never wrestle with a pig, because you both get dirty, but the pig enjoys it.

With the Quebec Liberals a lot closer in the polls than was predicted by the media of late, Péladeau will be the linchpin to an election win or loss for the PQ.

While Pauline sees Péladeau as a necessary component to election victory, she may be making a pact with the devil and the gambit could very well backfire if the Liberals push the notion that Péladeau will usurp the throne and impose his harsh austerity and anti-union and anti-entitlement philosophy, imposing upon the province a punishing economic regimen worthy of an army boot-camp sergeant.

Anybody who is being unfairly rewarded, be it lazy-ass fisherman in the Gaspé, beneficiaries of wasteful electricity projects, welfare recipients and up to and including the entire over-paid and bloated government public service, should be on notice.
Péledeau represents a slash and burn manager, who embraces a take no prisoners economic and business mentality, where the bottom line is more important than people.
It is a philosophy no Quebec political figure would dare enunciate and one that even Francois Legault would be too frightened to even contemplate.

The Liberals could exploit this weakness, because in the end sovereignty aside, people will vote their economic interest if they see it threatened.
While Péladeau may earn votes from middle class voters previously fearful of the economic ramshackle fostered by the PQ, the traditional union and entitled base may be frightened off.

It is fascinating political theatre with an outcome difficult to predict.

Péladeau is everything the province of Quebec needs, a leader willing to make the tough economic decisions that are needed to get Quebec on track, including cutting out entitlements and government waste, no matter the cost it imposes on the entitled.

But Quebec voters are probably too invested in the status quo to abide by the painful dose of economic and political truth that Péladeau would deliver.

To paraphrase the movies, when it comes to Quebec voters.

THEY CAN'T HANDLE THE TRUTH!!

You go out of your way to try to make me look dotty but people who know, think different. i was introduced to Dr.Couillard by a member of parliament as being politically insightful especially in the area of demographics.. Peladeau is a control freak - it's well known and has no regard for the average person because he does not live the in the same circumstances as 99% of us do! He was born into money, walks over people for power and money and controls most of the same publications that run down anglophones, allphones and Canada on a continuous basis. He is obviously unethical - won't even follow the rules laid down by his own party!

What I've relished the most throughout this occasion is reading all the hypocritical statements made by separatists regarding PKP.

It proves that their are so rabidly obsessed with achieving independence that the sovereignist side truly can do no wrong.

They just don't get that this is why their side will never win - because it lacks conviction and character.

Look at how much pressure the PQ applied to Liberal MNA David Whissel when it was discovered that he owned shares in a paving company at the time that he was public works minister.

This is beginning to fuel speculation that Peladeau is little more than a publicity stunt for the PQ. Some are saying he'll do his best to help usher them into a majority and then leave.

He might want to shorten this affair up - if you check out the Videotron FB page, it's been mercilessly shelled with angry subscribers both Franc and Anglo alike stating they're jumping to Bell and refuse to fund the PQ:

      https://www.facebook.com/videotron

I've stopped reading the comments just because there are now too many. Chose certain, this move has cost Peladeau a lot of money so far and his newspapers are taking a huge hit on the credibility front, with all editors, including the Anglo-Canadian ones, trying to perform emergency damage control.

    6. Thank you ABSA - the polls are really weird sometimes. I heard one last night on TV that said 60% of the people they polled had not made up their minds as to how they were going to vote as yet. I find that really strange and very high given the political situation here and I honestly feel people are not being honest with pollsters any longer. I'm kind of glad really; I personally find that the sheep follow the polls and people don't think for themselves so maybe people are being a little more cautious about being honest when they get these calls.

And Serge - this is nothing new for the separatists - they make rules and then break rules as often as they change their shirts. Imagine, he will do as he likes even if it's unethical. These people sure do like to think they are over and above the law in every way imaginable. It's no wonder this province is so corrupt from the ground up.

    1. He also knows that the separatist option would have to be phased out. It won't be easy because it's obviously the hard liners that have forced this to be. Once he has the power he will have to question the separatism option knowing it will kill investment.

Make them live with what they have and/or decrease the entitlements for new employees entering the workforce but we don't need a sledge hammer.

In my area Bell services are much much worse than Videotrons. I switched from Bell To Videotron about 1 year ago because Bell's Fibe internet which was costing me $55 a month was as slow as dial up internet. I made many complaints and nothing was done by Bell. I pay $35 a month for Videotron basic internet and it is lightning fast compared to Bells. And yes, I am using the same computer as I was when I was with Bell. I knew that Videotron was a separatist company but I could not keep paying for a service (Bell) that was crap. I also never had an issue with customer service at Videotron. My calls are answered within 2 min compared to over 1 hour wait time for Bell. I am staying with Videotron, they have the T.V. channels I want, they have great internet speed and they have good customer service in English. And no, I am not a separatist.

  8. For all,

If you are serious about following the election, the Board of Trade of Montreal has this event planned:

Economic debate between the PQ, the QLP and the CAQ

We are pleased to invite you to a lunch debate on the economy, on Friday, March 14. Representatives of the three main parties will present their positions and priorities for reforming the state of Quebec’s public finances and revitalizing its economy. The event is organized by the Fédération des chambres de commerce du Québec, the Institut du Québec and the Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal.

The debate, moderated by Bernard Derome, will be preceded by an expert panel discussion taking stock of Quebec’s economic and budgetary situation. A number of recent studies have demonstrated that public finances are stretched to the limit and that for over 20 years, the province has been lagging on certain key economic indicators. Quebec is also the province with the highest debt, where the population is aging most rapidly and where taxes are the highest.

Given Quebec’s situation and the pressure on already strained public finances, it is time for Quebec to decide: should it protect the basket of services and tax more? Should it invest in infrastructures and increase the weight of the debt? How can we improve our productivity? How can we stimulate the economic growth of the city and the regions? We are seeking solutions. Let’s hear what the experts and political parties are proposing.

Debate on Quebec’s economy and public finances between:

    Nicolas Marceau
    Martin Coiteux
    Christian Dubé

    Date: Friday, March 14, 2014, 11:45 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Nah, the PQ has decided that Quebec Solidaire can keep the dipsticks and their continual arguing.

I still believe, no matter what PKP says, that the current PQ has given up on independence and this is simply another step toward the new ethnic nationalism party.

Forget your preconceptions about what's happened in decades past, stop fighting the same old battles, and recognize that people have moved on, evolved, and updated their tactics.
Sovereignty is dead -- 61% of Quebecers oppose it.

BUT and this is the important but -- Sovereignty is not important as long as they have POWER.

Do you really think Marois and Peladeau want their own country?

SURPRISE it doesn't matter, as long as the brain dead fools who support sovereignty vote for them, which they will do as long as the PQ leader whispers 'independence' at a private rally and then never mentions the word in public (which is, natch, exactly what Marois has been doing since she became leader).

Now, the PQ intelligentsia (and please, stop making the mistake that your opponents are stupid just because you dislike them) know that sovereignty alone is not enough to get them power -- and they also know that counting on union support won't get them anywhere either.

After all, it's what the PQ has been doing for 40 years! It hasn't worked. And so they've changed.

The PQ is only going to pay lip service to sovereignty (which is all they've been doing for the past 15 years, really. Still gets people apoplectic) and has shifted to an ethnic nationalism base.

This is not Rene Levesque's PQ. Not Parizeau's not Bouchard's.

It's a new party and if you don't realize that you are toast.

    Here's a point I haven't heard brought up yet.

What if another Quebec-born media baron would have chosen to run...but for the PLQ or CAQ: Conrad Black.

Yes, that's right, many people aren't aware, but Black is in fact Quebecois.

Should he have chosen to run back when he was still at the helm of his media empire, the separatists would be screaming bloody murder and cringing that he would use his newspapers to sway public opinion.

This is why I think Peladeau's nomination is far too damaging. The hardcore troops will attach themselves to it like the mindless partisan leeches they are, but the moderate separatists are having problems digesting this.

Anyhow, on the topic of Conrad Black, he went to jail for something that sounds awfully close to what Mme Marois may well be guilty of. OMG how I would love, love, love to see Matante Popo in jail!

    4. With TVA getting the new NHL contract it seems even more likely that the Nordiques will return. Which may or may not be a good thing as there is a real 'bread and circuses' feel to what's going on. It looks like maybe people are being bought off a little. Sure they'll get a hockey team, and Quebecor will get the entire market.

Not the entire market, of course, they'll divide it up with Bell to make it look like there's competition (the same thing Bell and Rogers have done in Ontario) and If Quebec becomes independent there will be a version of the CRTC but how can it have any teeth when one of the main players it needs to regulate will be the one creating it?

This is exactly the kind of thing that supposedly made Quebec 'distinct' from Ontario, public control of the culture. But now it looks like it's going to be run by private companies just like everywhere else.

I'm surprised that Quebecers don't seem to have a problem with a man who will still have to answer to shareholders (and Quebecor is traded on the Toronto and New York exchanges so many of the shareholders have nothing to do with Quebec) being in the government - I know there is always the claim of the blind-trust (although hasn't Peladeau said he's not doing that?) but we're not that naive, anymore, are we?

      Delete
    6. Blind trusts might make sense for someone who is simply an investor, not so much for the biggest vote shareholder, of his own family company, who used to be CEO. I mean look at Pauline's hubby, all he was, was the head of the FTQ and he was talking with and making dirty deals with the current management years after he left. Peladeau isn't one to take a back seat, he'll be apprised of the goings on and be apprising others of what to do, the only question is will he be caught doing it.

      Delete
    7. @Student

Well, that's good. Of course, it's really only as good as the regulation and enforcement. But anyway, I suspect there will be no obvious conflict but my suspicious nature (and my experience with big business) makes me think the effects of having business inside the government will be long-term, anyway, and happen slowly.

I suppose this is the kind of thing I had in mind when I asked if the price of independence could ever be too high. This isn't just government teaming up with big business, this is very anti-union big business - the worst employer in Quebec, isn't that what the FTQ called Quebecor? (a good stock to own, though).

Separating religion and government is a good idea but so is separating business and government, especially if the unions are going to be weakened.

"i think you should wait for the assemblée nationale ethics dude to come up with recommendations."
Hmm well Peladeau didn't think the same "On Monday morning, Peladeau told reporters he would not sell his Quebecor shares, even if he were told to do so by the province's ethics commissioner." of course as a member of the PQ party his position changed by the hour!

"on the other hand if your objective is to sling turds you should shoot now while facts are still not available"
Well facts aren't available because Pauline called an election to avoid testifying on the FTQ matters, I mean I can see why she wouldn't want to answer question on something like this:

"In the recording, then-FTQ president Michel Arsenault said the PQ would not want a public inquiry into construction corruption, because "they will be hit, too," and "because we have a deal with Blanchet.""

I don't know exactly how long you've been following this blog, but Student has previously fought tooth-and-nail to defend the FTQ and unions. But now that PQOceania has declared the FTQeastasia as being doubleplusundergood, Student has dropped alliances with them overnight and now deplores their very existence.

I see it all over social media, too. People who declare themselves proud "socialists" are drooling over themselves over PKP's arrival and they are now trampling all over their "convictions", even justifying the lock-outs PKP lodged against their own fathers.

That is how poisonous nationalism is - like a heroin addict, all logic and common sense goes right out the window and your life becomes consumed by one single objective which robs you of your ability to remain objective.

AMD asked him to elaborate on the 1995 referendum. PKP lit up like a dog smelling a piece of raw meat. Within a few seconds he was staring her in the eyes and made the following statement, live on TV, "Le référendum de 1995 a été volé".

Coming out of Léo Bureau-Blouin's mouth, I would have laughed it off. Coming from the former head of a multi-billion dollar empire gave me the creeps - this guy is seriously deranged. The law required boys to attend school until the age of fourteen but practically on his fourteenth birthday the old man would find him a job, usually delivering beer or groceries on a bike. I found it strange that while we English kids were playing baseball after school, none of my french friends were with us. Ed There was eleven elementary schools in Verdun and only one high school that went to grade ten. Many French kids never got to high school. If a boy was not smart they didn't have time to waste on him I felt sorry for my friends. the yard was like a dump with cars parked in it, there was no way they could play ball there if they were allowed.. Harper is the best one to deal with quebec for sure Pierre - he can be nasty and that's what quebec needs now more than ever. I am somewhat resigned to what is abotu to happen..its very likely the PQ win..perhaps not a majority but in the end not sure it really matters.
And if the Liberals win..it only delays the inevitable another few years..maybe a few more smart people can leave before tshtf. Its time for the anglophones and allophones and federalist francophones to stand up and make a stand against this neverending whining. Lets get on with the referendum but then lets have serious negotiations..including partition..50+1 is not enough in my books and in reality they should look at the results per riding..the ridings that vote 60 percent or more to leave canada can leave..those that vote 60 percent or more to stay should stay. That would be true democracy..this notion that a bunch of people living int he sticks can decide the future of Montreal is ludicrous. And its high time that the federal government stand up and makes a stand instead of its deafening silence. Silence is not making the problem go away..its a cowards way of dealing with a tyrant.

I believe the threat of a PQ majority has served as a blessing in disguise.

Rather than resort to pandering to beat a possible PQ majority, the other parties seem to be gravitating towards their roots and campaigning on their core beliefs (took long enough, EH!)

Couillard doesn't espouse an ounce of restraint as he paints himself red and declares himself a proud Canadian and tells it like it is - if you're a separatist, it's because you're thinking small. Like that shit or lump it.

Same with Legault. Knowing that this is his final chance, he's drawn his line in the sand and is doing what he should have done from the very beginning: attacking unions.

      Delete
    4. Before, Couillard was called Flip-Flop on his Charter position, he had differences with Houda-Pepin and Gautrin but he got his team and policies sorted out. For the PQ, independence and Peladeau have replaced Charter talk. Doesn't Marois understand that she should have gotten her shit together BEFORE the campaign? Apparently not. I hope this is the end of the PQ.

      Delete
    5. They are doing this to rile up the troops as the last stand for independence. Couillard should take a new tack and say those ridings that vote over 60% no to the PQ are obviously not for independance and as they want to remain Canadian they will be exempt for any new charters or bills that the government put forward should they win the election overall. That would give those A$$holes something to think about plus give lots of reason for people to think of their decision to vote for the PQ at all. Wheat from chaff shall we say.
