Quebec Fantasy Budget Prelude to Election

I'm on vacation down south, hoping to take a break from the endless debate and soak up some rays, rebuilding my mental strength and resolve which has been sorely tested this last year, observing and commenting upon the maddeningly fantastical Wonderland of Quebec politics

At any rate,on the way down, on this protracted road trip, somewhere in South Carolina, my computer kicked the bucket and now reposes in the Apple store in Aventura, Florida, a Genius Bar nerd techie informing me that the motherboard would have to be changed and that the computer will will not be fixed before Monday.

This very short post comes courtesy of my smartphone and I now can sympathize with anyone trying to post something of significance on the tiny platform.

Please use this post to comment on the budget and the proposed general election, rumoured to be on the way.

I'll be monitoring the comments board periodically, so I'd appreciate a little consideration in publishing stuff that knowingly violates the terms of this blog.
I actually have confidence in all of you to act respectfully.

In the meantime, congratulations to our women's curling and hockey teams on their golden moment and destiny with history...

  1. Good for you to take a break from Quebec. Everybody needs that.

Budget? Lets call it what it is. Bullshit.

It doesn't really matter what all the complicated words mean.

The only useful part for quebec media and listening public is the usual part where they blame anglophones/immigrants and Canada for their lot in life.

Fabricated issues, their new Rosary beads. Touching the beads and thinking of the slights and insults against their culture and language. The lack of respect!

Constantly searching for things to blame the depressing state of Quebec on except themselves and their insanity.

I'm sorry to insult you with non francophone cultural references.

Remember the most important thing in life is belief in the PQ and "pure francophone bloodlines".

Imagine how embarrassing it would be for a francophone to admit you had spent years following something that became basically Hitlers party.

Embarrassment and pride are the only things that are important based on the petty complaints at the OLQF.

However, the final sentence of this article says that by calling an election, it would spare them from testifying and having to provide any accountability for their actions (Marois’ lunches with the FTQ at Club 357c, the FTQ Solidarity Fund investing millions in Blanchet’s company and the like).

And I don’t know why you’re against The Gazette, cebeuq. Their article about it is right here:

Lowlife xenophobes deserve to be outed and condemned for their unadulterated bigotry. The 'quebec' brand is enveloped in deep rooted prejudice as witnessed by this little charming post from previous:

The intent is to wound and demean an ethnic minority, and make no mistake, this is real ETHNIC-BASHING at its best. Not to mention the worst violators of Civil Rights in North America live right here, in La Belle Province ...of North America. And so we share it with the world, tourists and investors alike, beware of the hugely ingrained, nauseating, uncivilized and putrid province this has become, as evidenced above.

Think twice before spending here, CAVEAT EMPTOR.

What a great day! The ultra-corrupt couple, Marois & Blanchet now have to face the music and S.R is too busy throwing his fists up in the air for Team Canada.

S.R, we rarely see eye-to-eye, but you're right, Team Canada rocked it. Cheers to that!

      So let's tally the score:

      1. Marois to be roasted at the very commission she fought two years to get established. Funniest part about it being that she accused Jean Charest of being corrupt, but so far, all the dirt has been on her and her slimy husband.

      2. The PQ delivered a half-baked budget that offers only a 50% glimpse into the actualities of Quebec's economic reality. I can smell the burning flesh from here.

    3. Marios wears the pants in the relationship.

Right now she's telling him when to shit and eat and he's listening.

The two of them are locked up in "mock charbonneau" sessions with lawyers.

By the time they come out of that they will be programmed with circular answers for everything.

The Charbonneau lawyers and their families will be under massive pressure to go easy on them.

The lawyers will never get invited to a neighborhood mechoui (drunk bikers, FTQ and PQ members) ever again.

The biggest problem with the Charbonneau commission at the end of the day is it's an indictment of Quebec model. As long as they focus on Italians and the mafia it's all fine.

Otherwise it's just uncomfortable truths for Quebecers.

I have one iMac. I needed to change the hard disk after 2 years. Cost me $500. I have a Dell laptop I own since 2004. Never needs any repair. It just too old and underpowered and out of today's spec. Right now I am just happy with another Dell and I let my son play with the iMac.

      Delete
    3. Editor - Hopefully it is still covered by the 1 year AppleCare warranty and won't cost you a dime (Apple repairs are outrageously priced, plus their techs don't actually "repair", they simply swap out main boards or the entire unit to save time and cost. The faulty component is sent back to the factory, where a 25 cent capacitor or whatnot is changed, and it is then resold at full cost to a new customer). Admittedly most other companies do the same, but at least their repair costs are more reasonable than Apple.

I wonder if they even diagnosed your Mac properly. What were the symptoms, did it just not turn on? Any lights or activity? Personally I just repair computers and electronics myself. Or build my own computers. Not a fan of Apple products these days, particularly not the Mac. Used to be a loyal Apple fan back in the early days though, before the Mac existed. :)

For the budget itself, Nicolas made his homeworks. No tax raises. Less state-providency and comparisons with other canadian provinces to set objectives. Its austerity but this is what we unfortunately need, that and diminishing the size of the government, which wont happen with these goofballs too busy sucking Rambo's dick.

Andre Prate in La Presse said Ottawa did right by cutting its spendings. Marceau is kinda cutting but not enough. It doesn't go far enough.

"As our provincial government prepares to lay yet another layer of “social engineering” upon us with this proposed new “Charter of Values,” I hope they will consider how 50 years ago, some francophones alienated so many Italians that the outcome now 50 years later does not appear to have worked in the favour of anyone in the francophone community."

      Delete
    4. Grassi: "Italians completely understand the francophone community’s desire to preserve and promote its language and culture. After all, against all odds, we Italians are trying to do the same with ours. But coercion can only go so far. Perhaps the use of more positive approaches would yield superior and more lasting results?"

I agree with Grassi on his observations regarding coercion, but I think he is underestimating the psyche of many Quebec francophones who think that they're language is worthless and only coercion can protect it. I recently heard P.Curzi say exactly this on MaTV after the screening of "La langue à terre": he said that "coersion is all we've got", and Bock Cote agreeing with him.

Ironically, this feeling of worthlessness influences the opinion of others. This self-opinion is rather easily detectable by new immigrants, old immigrants and allophones, i.e. people who unlike the anglophones, have no historical beef with francophones and can possibly have no superiority feelings. Yet this self-imposed worthlessness is something that an immigrant will detect not long after coming here, and come to a conclusion that francophones consider their own language worthless. And from there it's a small step to assuming that if they think that it is worthless, then maybe it is. And paraphrasing Grassi: this does not appear to work in the favour of anyone in the francophone community.

I recently heard an excellent phrase used in Scotland to describe the politics of the SNP: the politics of grudge. This is exactly the politics of the PQ and its ally Quebecor. Apparently, this is the tactic you have to use if you want to break up a viable western democracy. Outside of the West, breakups happen from time to time, but as Stephane Dion correctly observed, one has yet to happen in the sphere of western parliamentary democracy.

People don't want to break up things that work, so if that is your political ambition, you have to dredge up things from 300 years ago and stir up the old grudges, make people feel miserable and set them on an endless quest for "respect", set people against other people until everybody has enough of each other.

Montreal cannot afford to throw money on a trivial party celebration when infrastructure condition is now at a critical stage and people's lives are in danger (or have actually died from falling chunks of buildings, overpasses and caving in roads!).

What is so important about a 375th anniversary anyway? Seems an arbitrary milestone. Phhpt...are they going to have another party for the 380th? Maybe they should throw a celebration for every year that Montreal is still standing in one piece and not yet bankrupt. Can't be too many of left!

This is what we call a BOONDOGGLE.

It's a $500 million vanity project with little upside except symbolism. Perfect for Quebec.

It will go another $500 million over budget.

Dozens of construction firms will make their bizness off it.

At the end of the day the land created on top will be given to mob backed condo developers to exploit at undervalued prices.

      It's always the same here.

Only the project name, location and year changes.

Meanwhile the streets they already built continue to crumble.

The city doesn;t understand they need to stop new construction totally.

They should not be doing anything except rebuilds at this point.

Every new project (or 40 year old fantasy) has a long term cost that is not calculated, budgeted or understood by "Les Quebecois".

We are already unable to fix the infrastructure with the monies available but they still keep building more, making the problem even larger over the long term.

I wish I were the type of person like many other types of people who didn't give a crap, lived my life, worked, paid my taxes and not let anything political, mildly touch me. I did live my life like that for a LONG TIME..never even occurred to me there was a problem. Like many, I was on auto-pilot, spoke French when it was expected of me...which was always..never even asking myself..what was my language preference? What language do I want to speak? AND for the most part, I still do this..it is a habit. The minute a Francophone is In front of me, even if he/she speaks perfect English to me, I go to French, and people have reproached me about this, but I when I do it, I'm not aware I am doing it.

My point is, when you give people everything they want and everything they expect and they are still not happy AND still they hate you..well you know what..I'll give you a F*ING reason to hate me then, and trust me, it does't wound me in the least, that you hate me. @R.S

You mean Marois didn't keep her word? You mean she lied and she deceived, cause she said she wasn't going to raise day care fees, and now she has? You mean a little like she did with the students, while she banged pots with them in the street to act like she sympathized and then the minute she got elected she screwed them over and increased student fees anyway? You mean like that?

      Nope...did't see that comin'

what's the lie? defending a freeze and considering an indexation as reasonable are not incompatible. here's an example to help you understand. you would defend banning s.r from this blog, but you still consider granting him freedom of speech as reasonable. you see? you're the same as bureau-blouin. are you a liar too?

I'm willing to bet that there are these A$$holes all over Canada that are paid by SJBS or IF (subsidized by the separatist government) to deliberately start trouble in other provinces and use it for their propaganda here in quebec. Nothing else makes sense and everyone knows that the provincial governments, excepting NB, are not officially bilingual. James Wolfe is correct sometimes and it's scary to think that but these type of complaints really makes one think that what he says is not total BS.

there is still a provision that enables the lieutenant governor to call an election sooner should the premier request one. i assume the queen could say no you keep going...

you'll have to agree that striping a minority government from the possibility to call an election prior to legislature expiry date would not be fair, as it would mean the opposition can call an election when they wish with a non confidence vote but the government couldn't. or would this be legit in your skewed referential?

    6. So let me get this straight. The PQ government, knowing full well that they were in the minority, proposed a bill that would limit their own power to call an election, having it passed... and then deliberately violate their own bill?

  37. Legault, a one-time media darling, has largely fallen out of Quebecers’ favour. The most recent CROP poll has the CAQ at 13 per cent. It has sparked rumblings, mostly on Quebec City’s many radio talk shows, of an “anybody but Pauline” campaign, which would see CAQ voters shift their allegiance to the Liberals, if only to prevent a split vote in the PQ’s favour.

“The next election will be determined in Quebec City,” says Sylvain Bouchard, a popular radio host in Quebec City. “Unlike the rest of the province, it’s a three-way race here. If the Liberals and the CAQ split the vote, the PQ is on its way to a majority.” CAQ voters are typically conservative, susceptible to both the PQ’s charter project and cold economic fact. In the Quebec City region, they are also very loyal to their long-serving MNAs. They are tempting targets for both the PQ and the Liberals. Win them over, and you go a long way to winning the election.

    1. Voting for the CAQ only makes sense if you happen to live in a riding where they are polling first or second. Only then will your vote count for anything at all. That’s the system we’re stuck with and you already know that perfectly well. We are stuck with voting strategically, not according to our conscience.

Showing your displeasure by voting for a third-place party sends no message to anyone whatsoever. Voting for a 4th-place party (like Apple IIGS says he’ll do) is useless and not even worth stepping out of the house for because that is the very definition of a wasted vote (never mind the tiny subsidy they get). Only Proportional Representation allows every vote to count, which is why almost nobody else in the world uses our broken FPTP voting system that was designed for two-party competition.

If you live in a riding where the first, second and third place parties are PQ/Libs/CAQ, then your vote for the CAQ is a vote for the PQ. Discuss.

If you live in a riding where the first, second and third place parties are Libs/PQ/CAQ, then your vote for the CAQ is still a vote for the PQ. Discuss.

In any event, we’ll still wind up with years and years of court challenges against the discriminatory policies that the PQ always favours and the political squabbling and perpetual conflict that the PQ always seeks, as with their usual anti-anglo and anti-ethnic witch-hunts that *will* occur.

    2. The Libs own my riding, ain't no CAQ or PQ gonna win here. I actually took my name off the voter's lists because I was called for jury duty and this is where they get your name from. I got an exemption to skip jury duty but I was ticked that the paper I got from the courthouse seemed to say that I was "profiled" as an Anglo so that is why they selected me to be on a jury for an English trial. I also saw that ancestry.com has added election lists to their databases. Too easy to access personal information, if you ask me. I still can vote but have to show regular ID I think, if I have no voter card.

    A) The Editor requires a break and can't be around to moderate

    B) Alleviate the tediousness that sets in when comments go beyond the 150 mark

    C) Readers here feel that the trolls have gotten enough air-time and want a bullshit-free forum
