Anglicization?.. A Lesson in Faulty Logic

The Sky is falling, The Sky is falling!
Many years ago McGill University instituted a policy of allowing francophone students to submit papers and take exams in their native French.
The onus is put upon professors and T/As to make a 'reasonable accommodation' (Ha!) to those French students who are capable of taking classes in English, but lack the commensurate writing skills.
The policy has been wildly successful, allowing those French students so inclined to earn a valuable university degree from Canada's most venerated institution.
McGill today boasts that somewhere in the vicinity of 20% of its students are francophones.

For French language militants and PQ ministers like Jean-François Lisée, it's not a situation conducive to promoting the French language, rather the opposite. They believe that allowing francophones to attend an English institution of higher learning under favourable circumstances, ultimately leads to French graduates working and perhaps marrying in English, an inexorable march towards assimilation.

The argument is made because of the very real correlation between the higher assimilation rate for Francophones who graduated from English cegep or university. So for low-brow hysterics like Mario Beaulieu or Jean-Paul Perreault, it's simple proof that English cegep or university is dangerous for the survival of Quebec's francophone majority.

Even those who should know better, publish similarly biased views when there is an agenda to be promoted, like the deceptively named Institut de recherche sur le français en Amérique, a virtual separatist think tank with as much credibility as the Institute of Hair Replacement.
"For francophones who attend English college, French is  used less  when shopping, at work and among friends," explained the president of the IRFA, Patrick Sabourin. Link{fr}
It is always dangerous when academics or scientists use their talents to confirm preconceived notions or try to prove an agenda, like tobacco company scientists who maintained for decades that there was no link between their product and cancer.

Of course the academically challenged public is easy to dazzle with such simple conclusions, the  scientific relationship between  correlation and  causation of little import with those determined to deceive.

The fact that more francophones who graduate from English institutes of higher education, get a job in English, than those francophones who attend a French school, doesn't necessarily mean that the school caused them to do so.

I can best demonstrate the principle that correlation does not imply causation with some brief examples.

Some insurance companies offer a discount to owners who equip their homes with fire extinguishers, not because the extinguishers prevent or limit the effect of a fire significantly, but rather because these homeowners are inherently more safety conscious and suffer less fires.

But sometimes causation can clearly be linked to correlation, for example in buildings that are outfitted with sprinklers and those that are not.
Statistics bear out that regardless of staff training, the age of a building, or the type of residents, sprinklered buildings save lives. In this case there is ample evidence of causation.

Let me offer a final example, perhaps easier to understand, the fact that people who voluntarily take a CPR course, live longer and healthier lives than those who do not.
Yet 99% of these people never use the training in a real life situation, so we cannot by any stretch of the imagination say that the CPR training itself can cause you to live longer.
But people who voluntarily take CPR live longer because they are clearly motivated to be pro-active about health issues.

Francophones who go to English schools assimilate more readily because that is the track that they were on to begin with, after all they learned English as a second language, long before they even started school.

Understanding cause and effect is a complicated issue, so it's easy to arrive at a false conclusion if one is so inclined;
"It has been proven that all heroin addicts smoked marijuana in their youth. Therefore, smoking marijuana leads to heroin addiction."
Post hoc, ergo propter hoc. ("After this, therefore because of this.")
Heroin addicts probably really started on mother's milk; does it lead to heroin?
Other examples:
"The cock crows, then the sun comes up, therefore the cock is responsible for raising the sun every morning"
"Francophones who go to English university are more likely to be assimilated, therefore English universities are responsible for their assimilation."
At any rate for an entirely entertaining and easy to understand, one page course in faulty logic. GO HERE

And so, French language militants, have developed a certain expertise in interpreting or twisting any fact or figure to prove the premise that French is under attack and in dire straights.

Not convinced?

If militants conclude that allowing French students to attend English university under favourable language conditions is an important element in their anglicization, why do they arrive at the complete and opposite conclusion for Anglophones attending French universities under similar language accommodations?

Recently we were treated to more hysterical predictions of gloom and doom by militants who claim that the handful of English students who are given language accommodations in French universities are anglicizing the schools, instead of being francisized themselves, the opposite of what happens when the shoe is on the other foot.

I can just imagine the contortions and twist of logic that those so inclined to disagree will formulate in offering a counter-argument.
No doubt it will be that the rules apply differently to English and French, the old standby, when all else fails.

And so, the University of Montreal is in danger of becoming anglicized because a handful of Anglo students are given a language accommodation, while the 20% of Francophone students at McGill have no effect on francisizing McGill, but in fact get anglicized themselves.

In  considering the 'facts' presented by so-called experts, it is useful to consider the source, after all would you blindly take on faith anything oil industry scientists tell us about the oil sands?
Would you automatically believe experts hired by the asbestos industry who claim that their product if properly used is non-toxic?

I am reminded of the baseball anecdote wherein a batter hit an infield fly and the third baseman and the catcher converged on the ball.
The catcher called for the ball by screaming;"I got it! I got it!, but the third baseman stepped in front of him and promptly dropped the ball.
As the catcher returned to his position behind home plate, visibly seething, the opposing on-deck batter tells him ;
"Hey, he had to consider the source."

Premier Pauline Marois recently served us up a textbook demonstration in faulty logic in a speech she made in Trois Rivieres.
"The Prime Minister argued that she was ready to allow Quebecers to choose between  "prosperity" and the economic measures she proposes, and "austerity" proposed by the CAQ and the Liberal Party, which want to return to the balanced budget more quickly."
 Madame Marois actually hits a bullseye in faulty logic by employing the famous Either/Or debate as demonstrated neatly in the comic below;

Is there any faultier use of logic than the assertion that the Crucifix in the National Assembly is not a religious article because it is a heritage item ?

In Quebec as elsewhere, anything can be argued away, where black can be argued as white and where in the end, it is the propaganda campaign attached to a debate that either wins or loses the day....seldom the facts.

      True story:

During a conference call this afternoon with a bunch of colleagues from different offices, one guy who works in Gatineau started bragging how all the Gold medals for Canada so far.. have been won by athletes from this province. Without missing a beat..another guy from out in Edmonton, in a joking but highly sarcastic tone replies: "bout time quebec does it's part for Canada, considering we feed it abundantly with transfer payments and keep it from crashing and burning. Nice to finally see it bringing us 'some' glory, if it's all you guys can manage, heck..I'll take it". Which was pretty much..a slam-dunk, in terms of a come-back...then it got super Awkward and since I was hosting the meeting, I did an immediate 'about-face' and got right into the agenda for the call. Pretty sure that's how much of the RoC feels about it.

For the time being, the seps have a far bigger issue to contend with - Parizeau blasted the sovereignist's lack of economic management.

You know what I find funny about Parizeau is that as he gets older, he's making his peace with the fact that he will not see an independent Quebec in his lifetime and is actually become more open and reasonable.

Unfortunately, only the opposite can be said about Bernard Landry, who will also pass on without seeing an independent Quebec and as a result is becoming meaner and meaner by the day.

Weird how two old-time colleagues can go in such different directions.

Everything Quebec complained about that drove the PQ since the 70s has also applied to Alberta. Maybe it's been worse for them. Imagine if an Alberta Prime Minister had devastated Quebec's economy the way the National Energy Program did to Alberta's in the early 80s. And even before that, the whole transfer payments program was passed by a Quebec Prime Minister.

But Albertans, like the entire ROC, know that the way forward in the world is bringing people together, not separating them. Our heritage is things like Peacekeepers and Medicare and taking in more refugees than anywhere else in the world.

Only Quebec separatists think there is any future in dividing people.

So, yes, once in a while a guy in Alberta may be fed up with the "innocent remarks" from Quebec. Maybe if Quebec knew a little more about Alberta history it would help everyone.

"If I didn't know my fellow Canadians so well I would be surprised at how gracious Alberta has been for the last forty years"

I'll tell you just how gracious, ...after the conference call was over, the guy out in Edmonton rung me right back, apologizing for his bluntness, and that the comment was for the other guy from quebec, who'd been blasting emails all morning of quebec in the medal standings instead of Canada. I explained I wasn't offended in the least. I may live, work and pay taxes in this province but it certainly isn't a source of pride for me, except of course the wonderful athletes honoring Canada at the moment in Russia, short of that, it's rather a source of embarrassment, if I have to be completely honest.

Montreal City-State however is a different story. If this blessed city can manage to distance itself from the ball-and-chain that has been the roq which has dragged it down a a dark hole the past 40yrs, maybe it stands a chance of bouncing back to yesteryear's glory and success.

We are cosmopolitan, we are forward-thinking, we are international, and the entire city speaks at least two languages, if not three. The truth is we have nothing in common with the solely White, French-catholic insular mentality prevalent outside the Montreal boundary...and it's time we admit this and part ways.

We do not want to be associated with the Caron-p's of the world. Our true essence is the Dufour-Lapointe's...dynamic, modern, bilingual..smart, talented....and all-encompassing, wonderfully representative of Montreal City-State! What truly exceptional ambassadors for this city and this country. Their star is rising and deservedly so.

Actually Anonymous I can tell you a little about history. Quebec was not always a have not province. Until the sixties we fed the nation. During he dut storms of the thirties Quebec farmers sent trainloads of food to the west, much of it paid for by Canada using the high income taxes collected from the millionaires of Montreal who also built tis city.
Thanks to the generosity of Van Horne and his friends the Railroad benefited the Western provinces more than
others. Premier R.B.Bennet, before becoming P.M. collaborated with rich Montreal businessmen to aid his province. people like Sir.hugh Allen, and Jame McGill were generous to all Canada. The Grain board helpd the Westerners during the war and after..Montreal was the only port accepting trade from Europe and other parts of the world. Sydney N.S was the biggest harbour but didn't have the forwarding outfits available. Montreal had the railroads and trucking needed to get to the whole country. We were the richest in Canada and we shared it generously.. By the way Canada supplied the money for Alberta to develop the oil. fields. Albertans took over when it started to make money.. Alberta also benefited from the Quebecers going west in the seventies. Ed

    33. I was one of those Quebecers in the 70s (though I came back to Montreal in '81 and didn't leave again until the 90s, but that's another story - I actually have a degree in Canadian history from Concordia). Certainly Alberta benefitted but that wasn't always the word they used ;).

What you're describing from Van Horne (which was hardly 'generosity, it was just business - well, government mandated monopoly business) onward was what confederation was all about. I think we agree that Alberta understand that so that when things changed and they started to benefit, as you say, they didn't move to separate but started paying back in. Only the maritimes really got screwed, but that was CD Howe's fault with centralization (remember, confederation was really Upper and Lower Canada joining with the more prosperous Nova Scotia which had all that shipping money at the time. Montreal got the railroads and trucking later).

But that's all a long time ago. What we're talking about now is how to move forward. Certainly people in Quebec have a mature enough attitude to accept a little ribbing from a guy in Alberta, that's all I'm saying.

Like the article a couple of weeks ago in this blog on the ratio of billionaires to Jews, Anglophones and Francophones in the general population, this proves going back a quarter century that Jewish brains are worth $1.00, English brains $2.00 and French brains $1,000.00.

Anonymous Friday, May 14, 2010 at 10:19:00 AM EDT

In Mortechai Richler's book Oh Canada! Oh Quebec! Reed Scowen, a Quebec MNA at the time, pointed out contradicting statements made by French language zealots and an English speaking demographer. If both hypotheses were followed to their logical conclusion, the demographer stated that by some given date in the future, there would be no English speaking people left in Quebec, and the French language zealots stated everybody in Quebec would be speaking English.

There was a CAQ representative, Cohen was her name, and she said something that really resonated with me. She mentioned that all previous and current reigning provincial parties have had affiliations/affinities with quebec unions, (which are the cancer eating up this province from the inside out), and CAQ being a new party, has none of this, none of this exists. Legault really wants a chance to clean up this disgusting mess and he owes no one. You know that expression, 'Never say Never'? So yes he's a seppie, ( as far as many of us are concerned, THEY (party leaders) all are, but maybe he's (FL) the the guy that will fix the Economy. He has the Business expertise, so why shouldn't people give him a shot. When you have Financial woes, you go to the Finance specialist, you certainly don't go to a cardiologist, unless you have heart problems, plus I'd love for same cardiologist to swear on a stack of bibles that as a civilian, he never voted PQ or Bloc...rather, would love for him to take a lie-detected test. This to say, when it comes to quebec Independence...they're a slight variation of pretty much the same thing. That point is moot.

CAQ really has a huge opportunity here to garner support. He said 10 yrs, let's see if he's a man of his word. The PLQ is pretty-much toast. And PQ...no comment.

Happy to hear you say that. I say it again..what do we have to lose in voting CAQ??? The Libs and the PQ have literally wrecked the economy over the past 40 years. We are out of time basically to fix it..Legault is the only one with business experience..what needs fixing urgently is the economy otherwise the rest is just moot. If there is a funding crisis then all the talk on language, values, health care, education is meaningless.

The CAQ are the only ones who actually are on record saying they would tackle the unions. We all know how useless both the Libs and the PQ have been with the unions over the past 40 years..how they have racked up massive debts..cranked up the taxes. We all know how the Liberals have arrogantly taken the anglo vote without doing anything to help the anglo community. Once again..I cant see the CAQ being any worse and a significant chance they are much BETTER!

I have trouble though believing you would descend to Complicated's level. It was people like him pushing the CAQ in the last election that cost us a PQ government.
We know the only chance for freedom we have is with the Liberals. Legault might be a genius eonomically but if he can't get elected he can do nothing. I have met Dr.Couillard personally and I can asure you he has the busines sense. He is a deeply caring person. He took my hand and looked into my eyes when he spoke and I sensed a love for human beings that is just the opposite to Marois and her hatred. He is just what we need. Please rethink your stance. Ed

You know ED we had pretty harsh words for each other at various times. But deep down I know you are a person of integrity and I respect that. I respect your care for others who are not so fortunate..you have a bigger heart than most of us here. I admire the fight in you and the spirit of never giving up.

However I am disappointed in your tunnel vision when it comes to the Liberal party. I grant to you that they are better than the PQ..no question. But simply looking at the facts over the past 40 years or so indicate that the Liberals have failed miserably on many fronts. The debt has been increased by at least the same amount under the Liberals reign as the PQ reign..go look at the numbers if you dont believe me. In fact the PQ are the only party to actually balance the deficit in 1997 or thereabouts under Lucien Bouchard..these are facts.

The Liberals were in power from 2003 until 2012..we all know via the Charbonneau commission that there was massive amount of corruption going on via the construction industry and implicating both the municipal and provinical governments. So either the Liberals knew what was going on and did nothing..or they didnt know what was going on which is also a sign of incompetence or both..either way a huge fail. My take on it is that this level of corruption was at a level never seen before.

The Liberals enacted and maintained many of the illegal language laws in Quebec while pretending to be defenders of the anglophones. This is also fact.

So we have a clear record of incompetence, mismanagement, possible criminal behavior and a certain level of contempt towards the anglo populations. If we anglos want to be taken seriously then maybe its time we call a spade a spade..this notion that we have no choice but to vote for the Liberals is sheer nonsense.

We finally have a viable third option..the CAQ..granted they have fallen out of favout over the past 6 months but things can turn on a dime in Quebec politics. Legault was a member of the PQ and was a seperatist..who cares...he is a succesful businessman who understands how the economy works..his party is the only one on record talking about taking on the unions..about cutting waste..about a 10 year moratorium on the seperation issue. He is faer from friendly with the PQ..I suspect Mme.Marois and the PQ hate the guy and his party.

The CAQ are the only reason the PQ did not win a majority in the last election. The CAQ were second in many more ridings than the PQ..in reality it was the stubborn Liberal vote in these ridings that prevented another 10 or so ridings moving to the CAQ which ironically would have given the win to the Liberals. I know this sounds crazy but I went riding by riding and looked at the numbers..the CAQ were far more competitive in at least 10 ridings than the Liberals..we all know that if the PQ had lost 4 more ridings then the Liberals would have won by default.

So ED I know its hard to change your political leanings after decades of blindly supporting one party but I honestly wished you would open your eyes a little bit and look at the facts. The facts are that the only real change we will see in Quebec is an election of a third party..the Liberals and the PQ have driven this place into the ground for far too long.

      Delete
    11. Correction to my post above..
it should read 'the CAQ were second in many more ridings than the Liberals.'

Try and understand this..the way our first past the post system works..the CAQ were within a few hundred votes of beating the PQ in many more ridings than the Liberals were. A swing of 5 or more ridings to the CAQ would have resulted in a Liberal win..yes a Liberal win. The math is below..

      PQ - 54
      Liberals - 50
      CAQ - 19

The CAQ was far more competivie..ie second place in at least 10 ridings..if CAQ wins 5 more of those ridings..many they lost by only a few hundred votes then we have the results below:

      PQ - 49
      Liberals -50
      CAQ - 24

Complicated, I am very totally involved in the Liberal Party here in the Verdun riding. As a great organizer, our man Henri Gautrin has been houseleader, deputy house leader and held office here 28 years. He is a mathmetician and physicist and brilliant thinker. Because of this Dr.Couillard has been here several times and I have beome deep into the campaign.. Why can't you get your thinking out of the past and move on. Dr.Couillard is not Charest or Johnston or Bourrassa. He has a totally new outlook on people and politics. He has much the same thinking as Paul Martin. Pay the debt and reduce taxes. He has a totally clean image which investors will go for unlike Legault who has said separation in ten years. Until he renounces that, world wide investors will not come here, they do not want to build for only a decade. A lot of investments only start to pay off in ten years. Couillard has never been part of a separatist party unlike Legault who was a member of the PQ since 1979 at age 21. At ge 24 he introduced Pauline Marois during a 1981 convention where the whole room stood to give a standing ovation to FLQ murderers. He has been a separatist for 34 years. Does this sound like someone investors would trust. Dr. Couillard refused his invitation to the order of Canada because Harper had given one to Arthur Porter who Dr.C saw throuh and turned away from/. Other men have turned provinces aroundlike Klein in Alberta; Smallwood in newfoundland.. J. B. Bennet. Couillard is certainly better educated than any of them.
You're right that I have tunnel vision and so do you. The difference is that my tunnel vision is looking towards the future. You keep looking at the past. Move on my friend life is passing us by and it will if we sit in a rut. Ed

      Delete
    13. You really are starry-eyed when it comes to Couillard. He is really no different than any other Liberal leader. Its the party that is the problem..changing the leader doesnt change the way the party is run.

And its very rich for you to tell me to stop looking in the past..voting Liberal is for people who are stuck in the past. The CAQ is the future..its new and refreshing. The Liberals propose the same old same old. I havent heard one Liberal leader talk about the power and corruption in the unions in Quebec - wonder why? Why arent they talking about cutting taxes and reducing the debt?

If Couillard was such a brilliant man then why has he been hiding..he has had ample opportunity to pounce on the PQ and has blown them all. Why not work with the CAQ to grill Mme.Marois husband..why not come out with a clear and consistent stance on the charter instead of waffling for 3 months..why keep Liberals in his caucus who contradict him..why do we see so little of him.

I have seen way more from Legault than Couillard..it seems to me the CAQ have been a much bigger thorn in the side of the PQ than the Liberals have. Its time for change..real change..not more of the same from an arrogant, incompetent party that has had decades to prove us wrong. The proof is in their record ED and your awe of Couillard frankly is naive.

We need a businessman to fix the real problem..the economy..Couillard is not a businessman but a lifelong doctor..a smart man sure but not what Quebec needs.

    16. "it's still a stretch to assume a business owner is always fince savvy."
Not really finance is one of the main pillars of business, and a business owner needs to be competent in it in order to survive...unless you want to assume everyone is terrible at their jobs and know nothing about their profession. Of course that's besides that point as Legault has never been a business owner, though he has been a finance director, an auditor, and a CEO all of which deal directly with finance. Look you just didn't do your research stop trying to dig yourself out of this one, you're going to need a much bigger shovel.

"also, i think it's useless for a premier candidate to be a finance guru. he'll have a team around him won't he?"
Knowing how to pay for things, raise capital, make a budget, all kind of seem like important qualities to have in a leader...lest you end up with a premier who makes decisions based on unrealistic ideology or pandering, spends way out of control, increases taxes beyond the breaking point and can't stick to a budget, maybe a couple billion outside the budget. I'd prefer a candidate with real world experience over a career politician, though some people prefer style over substance.

    Just a (quick) history lesson.

Do not forget that Jean Charest called the 2012 election because he thought he had it in the bag.

Despite widespread protests against his tuition hike policies, his party sensed that public opinion ultimately favored the Liberal stance.

We all know how that turned out.

I see the separatist camp arrogantly riding its high-horse into battle thinking the war is won before any swords have been drawn.

I sincerely hope more and more polls come out revealing that the PQ is ahead in the game.

If I was the PQ, that's actually the last thing I'd want to hear.

Especially since Couillard has dropped off the media map. Let's face it - the man isn't stupid. He's remaining silent, because he's biding his time.

After 17 months in office they've managed to fix nothing but rather break quite a few things. Now there is rumor of an early election. So if we are to understand this, they have screwed around for an entire year and a half, twiddled their thumbs and causing havoc ON OUR DIME and playing us by introducing a divisive charter which was just a dumb excuse to distract and divide us since they will call an election before it is ever tabled at the National Assembly, and if they do end up calling an election, it is proof positive, that bill 60... was nothing but..Sound and Fury signifying Bull Crap, ...to play the electorate. I hope people realize this and are outraged by it. I hope they remember how little this government thinks of them...literally and figuratively, when we go to the polls in March.

What's going on? Why is this still happening? What are these forces behind it? It surely must have to do with "accommodating" the anglo minority, in case one or two of them felt like driving from West Island to Longueuil to attend this momentous event.

Talk to your PQ MP about his plans to take on the power of event organizers, sponsors, advertizes, financial and economic forces...and see how fast he will change the subject and point you rather to an elusive powerful "minorité gâtée" which runs things from their secret headquarters in Kirkland.

Quite frankly I am sick and tired about hearing Quebecers moan on about the survival of the French language as if they are the sole keepers of the French language for the entire world. There are plenty of Francophone speaking countries compared to, Polish speaking, Czech speaking, Italian speaking, Greek speaking countries.
Quebec is a huge province...if you don't want to see English then how about living outside of the Greater Montreal areal. Anglophones helped build Montreal and we have as much right to our language here as francophones.

    6. I understand the fear factor when it comes to the francophones losing their language..they have seen it over and over across North America. On the other hand there comes a point where you need to let go of the language..its not the end all be all of ones life. How many millions of immigrants came to Canada and more or less lost their language or at least their offspring lost the native language and now are often thriving in Canada but speaking english, french or both.

My grandparents were not anglophones and now I am and I even speak french fairly well. None of us are complaining about losing the language our ancestors spoke..life goes on and honestly there are more important things in the world than language. I think having a decent job, happiness, friends, health are far more important..its fine to protect the french language but there is a point where you cant trample on other peoples rights to do so.

My sense is that we are heading towards a battle over Montreal..the more I look at this. I suspect that another PQ majority will unleash a wave of anglos and allos who are going to push for Montreal to get out of Quebec and ultimately that might be the price that Quebec needs to pay if they really want independance. Lets face it..Montreal has been built by many different groups..the anglos, the jews, the italians, the greeks and of course the french but les Quebecois in my opinion do not have any more claim on this city than the other groups..I would argue they have less.

Will they have to move too? Will there only be white people allowed? What about other religions....only Catholics I suppose. And further, has anyone ever broken it down into how many were transferred by the companies they worked for and how many left of their own accord? Many members of my family were essentially given the choice to stay in Montreal and be unemployed or to accept the transfer.

What did it change for you that these people left? Nothing. You still have to speak English to get a job, and the people that left were replaced by immigrants who learned English, because they need it to get a job (you got rid of the people but you did not change the underlying economic structure). So you still hear English everywhere, this time spoken more and more with accents by the newly arrived, and less and less with no accents by the anglos whom you reduced to 8% of the population. Accents have changed, but the language hasn't - it is still English. In 2014 in Montreal, English is as alive as it was in the 1970s, and you're as alive trying to curb it as you were in the 1970s. Look at all these years you have wasted.

now you can now drive out these "new anglos" of immigrant extraction and replace them with new immigrants, and in 10-15 years you'll end up with the same thing. It's because the causes anglicisation are beyond your reach. It's not who you drive out and who you bring in, it's about what forces drive the economy and your livelihood.

Do you reall think its english canada that has made english the international language? i would say that the dominance of the usa has made english the international language and the one that all people want to learn to interact with each other..its not Canadas fault.

Hence Quebec like the rest of the world has no choice but to accept and use english if they want to be part of the world economy. You can whine all you want about it but thats the reality.

Oh and if you really want people to speak to you in french only then you need a LOT more economic clout. Quebec is close to being the poorest province in Canada now..hence it has no clout anymore and it continues to diminish and a big reason is because of seperatist neanderthals who obsess day and night about the language people speak.

For them, it is true. It's not about the figures, it's about what they feel. And they do feel swamped by English.

The problem is that it is something that clearly bothers these people but that they cannot do anything about it and unable to accept it. Not being able to to change things and refusing to live with these things is a recipe for a neurosis, a common ailment of the pequistes.

By refusing to quit, by refusing to accept things they cannot change, you would at least hope they will attack the real causes of the thorns in their side. But they don't (either they are either confused or know that they can't beat the real causes).

They won't quit, they won't face the true source of their problems, and they won't accept things the way things are. What's left? Swinging fists at false and innocent targets, like the girls who served Bock Cote in French but then had the gall to talk to each other in English, or a store clerk who greeted Marechal with "May I help you?").

I don't feel divided or conquered, Montreal City-State is non negotiable. We, the multi-cultural facet of society live here, work here and pay taxes here and we will decide for ourselves what is best for us and the island. We're the kippah wearing, hijab wearing, turban-wearing, and just plain (en masse) citizens of this city AND we shall decide. Bring forth that referendum, so we can vote ourselves out of this looney bin that this crazy province has become, and then we can start rebuilding this incredible city from the ground up. We can start encouraging Industry to come back and invest OUT OF THEIR POCKET rather than bribing them with money we don't have. We will focus on the Montreal Economy rather than language police and what people display on their heads and we'll attract the worlds finest, Minds and Money to come to this fair city. It will grow again, and prosper again and see Success again, it has been sabotaged for too long and finally it's time for it to flourish again but first it has to lose some rotten limbs that have been holding it back. Those cannot be saved and can never be healed and they must go. On the upside for them, they have expansive territory they can choose to go to. Chicoutimi, Matane, Ville de quebec, Saint Anselme, Saint Apollinaire Saint Agapit, Saint Raphael, Sainte-Claire, Saint Henri-de-Levis, and so on...to go to...to be uniquely White Catholic and Unilingual, miles and miles of territory, to be estranged from the real world and remain insular. But we, Montreal City-State dwellers will breath life back into this remarkable city, or die trying. AND we will settle for at least trying. C'est assez!

No, I'm just trying to get your attention. But I do wonder about the phrase, "chicken shit runaways." I don't think that was the reality and for any discussion to move forward it should be based on reality and not myth or bigotry.

Most of us try to make the best choice out of the options available. For members of my family who had young children, mortgages and 10-15 years on the job the choices were to lose that job or accept the transfer. Believe it or not, it was very rarely an easy decision. I don't know anyone who was happy about being transferred away from their home.

The real decisions were made in boardrooms and, to use a British expression, "above my pay grade."

Most of us know Ken Dryden's excellent book, "The Game," but he also wrote a very good book called, "The Moved and the Shaken." That's us, we're not the movers and shakers, we're the moved and the shaken. And we're the manipulated.

The biggest change in Quebec over the past forty years has been in ownership. Maybe it makes you feel better than the new owners placate you with language laws and you don't care that they sacrificed a big part of the culture of Montreal and ran a lot of people out of their homes.

You can admire all those companies that moved out of Quebec and took Anglos with them, but I can't. I see them as the chicken shits and I wish that 'the people' (not to sound too socialist) had united against them. But we didn't.

I find it very interesting that all the student protagonists who played major roles during the student strike are all being cajoled with positions in PQ politics.

Lemme see, maybe just maybe, these "students" were already recruited to play a part way before the student strike. Maybe just maybe the political party in power now colluded with the unions months before the liberals announced that meager increase in education fees and knew that education was the weakest link they could attack and go after to cause havoc on the Liberals. After all, playing young impressionable inexperienced minds isn't a challenge really, if you use the right words, it's a red rug to a bull really. What I'm getting at is....it was all pretty much planned way before the students even knew that they would be the major victims to be played in a government take-down by the unions and a party that lusted for power again. Except for those aforementioned protagonists who now are being compensated for cooperating.

Yes I know, very Machiavellian ...mmmm ...but let's consider it for a moment...they gambled and won...and now, they are gambling again. All I'm saying is..let it marinate...(who's the walrus...??)

But the more important question beckons: What was it the Liberals did to piss off the unions that these same wanted them gone and colluded with the other seppie party playing unsuspecting students like concert cellos?

On top of all the games this incompetent government is playing, they're also playing Semantics.

Please can we finalyyyyy take out the trash once trash day comes around?

    3. If they get a majority government this place may well be burned to the ground. Problems like we've never seen before with these A$$holes in charge of anything including the city dump.

What are they doing getting involved with the running of the JGH for anyway? What are they trying to accomplish with their stupid nonsense telling people where they can go to get treated for their medical needs? They are the craziest bunch I've ever seen! Why don't they mind their business and trying fixing the damn economy instead of telling doctors who they can and can't treat? They are control freaks not fiscal managers as a government is supposed to be!

    6. Sorry AnecTOTE and complicated - can't see how voting for the CAQ is going to help us or this province and they were more than willing to negotiate with the PQ on a FEW changes to both Bill 14 and the racist Charter. These two policies alone will more than devastate the economy so it will not matter whether they tackled the unions or not. Hundreds of thousands will again leave crippling our tax base and no one will move here. The francophones that have left will not return - I never see any of them comment that they would like to come "home" save one that is in BC. The whole political movement in this province has to change their attitude towards the minorities that sustain the system and this will not happen under the CAQ. Again, the best of the worst is the liberals - I know it sucks but there it is.

    http://www.lerepublique.com/1129332/sotchi-2014-pourquoi-le-quebec-domine-le-canada/

En effet, nous apprenions ce matin dans le Globe and Mail que le Québec a investi 2,6 millions pour le sport amateur pour 2012-2013. En comparaison, l’Alberta aurait investi un maigre 159 000 $.

Gee, you sure have a lot to say for someone who called Athletes intellectually inferior just the other day. You just can't let it go, it's eating you up inside that they stood on the podium, put their hand over their heart, sang "Oh Canada" while the Canadian Flag was raised and meant it. It is a tough concept for you to grasp that people can be many things simultaneously and proud to be so. But here you are proving adski's theory all over again.

"The problem is that it is something that clearly bothers these people but that they cannot do anything about it and unable to accept it. Not being able to to change things and refusing to live with these things is a recipe for a neurosis, a common ailment of the pequistes."

Ahhh it warms my heart that you've taken the time to try and figure me out s.r., I'm truly touched. Lol

You can think and believe whatever you like about me, it's completely the fantasy between your ears who you've decided that I am...and who I am to refute or validate it. It's YOUR fantasy. But your reaction just now, and this sad attempt at projecting, lol, is very very telling. We hit a nerve and narrowed in ..on the depth of your psychosis. Shall we go further?

Here's the thing: the people in charge ...in quebec City right now, ....they know this, they understand how you're a slave to this mental decease and they play it, and they play YOU. You're so helpless you can't even get yourself to a place wher you can start to contemplate it. The plan, the mechanics. You and all those like you who cannot manage the least bit of objectivity become pawns for them. You're a nothing but piece..on a chess board...to be played first and then sacrificed ..to appease the grandiose ambitions of the little greedy queen.. presently at the helm. You are an object, you are a thing and your refusal to see it...is checkmate for them.

Now go to bed and sleep on that.

I am capable of living in a milieu where French is spoken. I have a hard time living in a milieu where French is endlessly spoken about (and it is designed to be endless). I have little patience with the politics of culture and identity politics in general, of which the Canadian politics of language is just a part.

"The point about disputes on such topics as the value of sexual abstinence, the role of religious charities in state-funded activities, the question of gay marriage, and the like, is that they are not framed to be resolved. The political function is to divide citizenry while obscuring class differences and diverting the voters' attention from the social and economic concerns of the general populace. Cultural wars might seem an indication of strong political involvements. Actually they are a substitute. The notoriety they receive from the media and from politicians eager to take firm stands on non-substantive issues serves to distract attention and contribute to a cant politics of the inconsequential."

  31. And Marois back-pedals on elections for a third time: http://www.montrealgazette.com/business/There+election+planned+Marois+tells+Couillard/9496401/story.html

...and she also feels a need to present a budget now. Guess her advisers finally got through to her that coming up victorious in an election would be impossible without a budget.

Seppies, take note. This is your new political reality.

You can no longer cry Anglo-wolf and get yourselves a referendum.

The Quebecois state is falling to pieces. People are liteerally dying in waiting rooms, massive layoffs are occurring across the province, roads and bridges are crumbling and people are so over-taxed that they can barely make ends meet.

Take all that into account and you'll find that this isn't 1980 anymore.

You may think that the Anglos and immigrants are the only ones opposed to the sovereignist movement, but just read teh comments section of le Journal de Montreal.

Or look up le mot-clic #PQ in Twitter.

What you'll see is that the vast majority of Francophones are sick and tired off living in marginal conditions.

So instead of coming here and trying to start shit with us on our blog (our community, not yours), perhaps you should go deal with the 75% of FRANCOPHONE Twitter users and JdM readers who want to kill the sovereignist movement and move forward.

  32. A perfect example of what I just said: http://screencast.com/t/XiTd5QsuOcT

Now, it really is no longer about French vs. English.

It's the progressives (both Francos and Anglos) banding together against the entitlement class.

Hard-working, honest Francos and Anglos have had enough of sustaining parasites like Student and S.R who protest in the street over pathetic tuition hikes that amount to 69 cents a day over the course of a year, while their roads cripple their vehicles (costing them even more money) and they have to pay even more taxes on that bottle of wine they want to treat themselves to after such a long day of bullshit.

Yes, Stephane Bedard wanted to go for maximum embarrassment of Couillard. I guess some people applaud those who like to humiliate others, I think it looks bad on the one who has the malicious intent to cause someone humiliation. It is so very high school..but then again it seems like many politicians never evolved beyond high school mentality.
