Charter is First Salvo In Quebec's War On Religion

Like a magician who keeps our concentration riveted on one hand while the other is stealing our watch, there is an unseen political drama that is playing out behind our back that absolutely nobody in the mainstream press has cottoned to.

Everyday our collective attention is glued to stories about the Charter of Values, where we diligently keep a scorecard of those who are for and those who are against, in order to see where we stand.
We are so invested in the utterances of the players on each side of the debate that our concentration has been diverted from the much larger issue playing out before us.

Months ago I watched an interview with Bernard Drainville where in response to a question about whether the Charter would spill over into private industry, he answered that he certainly hoped it would.
It was a short answer that went unnoticed, but sent chills up my spine.

Years ago in charge of over 1,000 employees I fine tuned my listening skills, not only to root out those who were telling lies or colouring the truth to their advantage, but rather the more complicated ability to understand the quiet and understated truths being presented.
And so I'm careful to listen to those quiet comments, sometimes thrown off as a subtle or sarcastic remark or an aside, that tells more about what a person is thinking than any direct question.

When Mr. Drainville answered that he'd he happy to see the Charter rub off on private industry, we should all of taken notice because it describes the government's true motive, which is to eliminate religion not only from government and its related agencies, but from public life in total!

Before I present other clues confirming this agenda, let me tell you why the PQ and sovereigntists are so dead set against religion.

It is simply because religion is an alternate and conflicting philosophy towards sovereignty and language which has in much of Quebec supplanted the dogma of traditional religion.

While there are no hard numbers confirming that people of traditional faith, be it Christianity, Islam, Judaism etc. are overwhelmingly federalist, its a fair assumption that politicians and observers can make.
It is no accident that the preamble of the Canadian Charter of Rights starts off with the statement of the 'supremacy of God' while the PQ is now proposing that the Quebec Charter of rights affirms in its preamble 'the primacy of the French Language as the fundamental value'
«la primauté du français» comme «valeur fondamentale de la nation québécoise».
It couldn't be clearer.

I don't think its a stretch to say that sovereingtists have replaced traditional faith in God and religion with the dogma of French as the Supreme deity with independence, its version of the promised land.

With this theory in hand let us examine for clues and lo and behold, the supporting evidence is not hard to find in the hearings into the Charter of Values being held by the National Assembly

In this well-choreographed assault on religion don't be fooled by the anti-charter speakers which are afforded the chance to speak.  These speakers are window-dressing, useful idiots  giving pretense of impartiality.
It is what is being presented on the PRO side that is intriguing and all telling.

First of all, make no mistake, the PQ is calling the shots as to who testifies and it is no accident that one of the first presenters were a family of redneck hicks who demonized Islam, "Imagine praying on all fours?" Watch the video with subtitles.
Was the appearance of these rubes an accident or a cleverly presented dose of religious hate? One has to consider that these people were thoroughly vetted before hand and therefore picked to say exactly what they said, what no politician on the ANTI side of the debate would dare.

Then further on, another witness was going on and on against ritual Kosher or Halal slaughter, which again has nothing to do with the Charter of Values and is nothing more than an attack on religion.

Further on, a certain Louise Mailloux unloaded on Amir Khadir for attending a rally of Muslims where the women sat apart from men and wore religious headdress, as if this was a violation of the equality of men and women. She then showed a video which depicted young Muslim girls embracing the Hijab in a religious-like ceremony meant to shock ordinary Quebecers as something abhorrent. Link{fr}

So according to this speaker, men and women sitting apart in a private meeting is a violation of the tenet of equality, another straightforward attack on religion.

So in the new Quebec, it would be no longer allowable for private citizens to meet in the manner they choose.
Makes sense right?
I wonder if Madame Mailloux would demand that the CURVES fitness centres reverse the policy of barring men as well?

Soon we will hear from those opposed to ritual circumcision, another bestial practice according to the secular, an unconscionable defilement of the innocent, while I'm sure no one will come forward to complain about parents piercing the ears of underage girls.

The hearings are a theatre of the absurd, meant to persuade and shape the ideas of francophone Quebecers that religion is bad.

Watch the witnesses who are testifying in favour of the Charter, most are really arguing against religion, in all its forms, because religiosity is the enemy of sovereignty, the entire exercise, a process of anti-religious proselytization, the suggestive power of government used to set Quebecers off God for good.

Crazy? Absurd?

First they came after your language, now your religion.
Is it really that big a surprise?

    1. We certainly see a lot of "Franco superiority" at the Charbonneau commission.

Quebec society has come so far in 50 years.

From being ruled "by english" to stealing from themselves and bankrupting the province.

Imagine what would happen if Francophones actually WANTED to destroy Quebec.

I actually like having separatists like him around. They're so simple-mindedly KKK-like in nature that the separatist movement, which is already in it's dying phase, is guaranteed to sink further to the bottom of the political ocean.

Hardcore chest-thumper separatists like S.R, Y.L and Student belong to a dying faction of the movement, that being the one led by the likes of Mario Beaulieu. In case you haven't noticed, that particular fringe of separatist is considered too much for other sovereignists.

Though I'm against both practises, to be fair only one grows back if the child no longer wants it when the grow up, not completely, but it is much less of an extreme form of body modification. The parents who perform circumcisions but have no religious convictions make absolutely no sense to me.

How about the fact that circumcision has shown to extremely reduce the passing on of aids virus by the African doctors fighting the disease. This alone shows the value of it. Also, if you ever sept in atent or cabin at camp beside a boy who has not been properly instructed in hygeiene you wouild be all for circumcision. I stll remember as a twelve year old the counselor asked me to take him to the nurse. Although I do believe circumcision is a mutilation that should only be inflicted on oneself upon reaching the age of consent, I do understand that people who believe in the religious "virtues" of this operation would be quite shocked by some kind of ban.

I always take wth a grain of salt any article on circumcision done by a female. Your cli[psays the foreskin is firmly attachd to the head of the penis which is total bullshit. The doctor pulls the foreskin forward to cut it and it comes very easy. off. So much for the reliability of these clips. Smegma is created by boys who have not been told to pull back the skin when they urinate. Also wipe the semen off after ejaculation. Smegma is a combination of urine and semen closed in a warm damp place and germinating. If anyone can't see the danger in this they have therir eyes abd mind closed. With so many absent Fathers these days any safeguard is a good thing. Ed

If God wants something from me, he would tell me. He wouldn't leave someone else to do this, as if an infinite being were short on time. And he would certainly not leave fallible, sinful humans to deliver an endless plethora of confused and contradictory messages. God would deliver the message himself, directly, to each and every one of us, and with such clarity as the most brilliant(that is you ED) being in the universe could accomplish. We would all hear him out and shout "Eureka!" So obvious and well-demonstrated would his message be. It would be spoken to each of us in exactly those terms we would understand. 8. @Homh, "I want Canada to show a backbone and defend Democracy EVERYWHERE in This country" Before I answer this question, I would like to say that I too want the same thing however the reality is that Canada lost this fight when they allowed the notwithstanding clause into their Charter. We can thank Trudeau and Chretien for this great democratic act, I guess voting for his son is the next logical thing for all of us to do . The only way for Canada to defend democracy in Quebec is to turn off the financial tap. This is the only way you control democracy in Quebec. Ask union leaders, mayors and mafia leaders and provincial politicians and they will all tell you the same thing. Money = Democracy in Quebec. We buy our votes, proud and true.

"If you think you are far removed from the oppression that takes place in here you are greatly mistaken" I'm not. I live with this bullshit every day. I see Rona and IGA circulars with English text 1/2 the size of the French words (This is not even a requirement by law). I call private multinational companies and press 9 for English and get people who insist on speaking to me in French when I am clearly speaking to them in English ( why even offer an English service if you won't respect the client's choice). I go to my cities portal (borough of Saint Leonard, click on the English link only to get a message that says "This page is not available" and reroutes me to the MTL portal page ( again why the F@#! do you even place a link only to display a message, just remove the link ) . @Homh until you can present me a Federal politician who can actually tackle the elephant in the room or explain to me why my Montreal vote is only worth 1/2 of what a rural vote is worth then all I can say is that Democracy in Quebec is Dead, if it ever existed at all.

    1. My favorite outtake from that piece (it does very much pertain to this piece given that culture is religion in Quebec):

Separatist program: "In Quebec we have a distinctly more vibrant culture!"

Reality (as conveyed through the Editor's pen): I often hear separatists tell me that Canadian English culture is just a pale imitation of its American big brother.

This usually comes from someone who couldn't discern between a Texas twang and the nasal dialect of Brooklyn or Jersey.

Discussing whose culture is better, is like comparing your children to my children, where beauty is decidedly in the eyes of beholder.

But one thing is sure, there's nothing innovative or different in Quebecois culture where the top television shows are low rent

French versions of the Dragons Den or the Price is Right and the top show an insipidly boring and dreary version of THE VIEW on Sunday night with stars and personalities that are most generously described as 'local.'

The heavily subsidized movie industry, is lucky to crack out just two or three decent movies a year.

As for music, dance, theater, and literature, well, I'll remain polite and say it isn't any worse than Canadian.

Nothing to see here, move along.....

I too wondered why that couple were allowed to testify, considering the Gov. had vetted their testimony. It was clear they were led in to for shock and scare value. No other reason as lets face it, their "story" has nothing to do with Bill 60. As for the Bill bleeding into the private sector.. well if it passes, private business with contracts with the government will have to follow it. So that's a close step, even huge step, in that direction already.

Culture as a religion? I know several separatists (some more radical than others, but generally speaking good people), and I would have to agree they seem to put their faith and energies in the protection of "The Quebecois Culture" above pretty much everything else in life.

  7. From a strategic point of view, this whole circus is a big risk for the PQ Separatists.
First, the public lynching of Amir Khadir. Quebec Solidaire has the attention of around 8-10% of the electorate. That's 8-10% that came DIRECTLY from the PQ. It split the Separatist vote and simply cannot go unchallenged. It could actually mean the difference between a minority or a majority for the PQ. Now they have their guns aimed squarely at Khadir to neutralize QS. To demonize a photo of him talking to a group of Muslim voters sitting in a seating arrangement with which he had no involvement and then to present a video of girls proud to wear a scarf on their heads as if it was some sort of terrorist training video is inflammatory and plays into the ignorance based fear that characterize rural Quebecois voters. I'm not sure that this type of attack on a popular figure will net the PQ any success. QS voters tend to be urban, young and idealist. I doubt an appeal to ignorance will sway them but it may plant a seed of doubt with the rural Quebecois voter.
Second, the PQ full frontal attack on minority religions and CUSTOMS will drive immigrants and minorities straight into the arms of the BIG TENT Liberals for the next few election cycles and will further characterize the Separatist movement as an Ethnic Nationalist project, (which it is). A risky move and I'm sure many in The PQ were against it. It's a bold strategy that has the potential to bury them but I have a sense that the PQ is fighting this election as if it's in survival mode and is ready to shed its thin veneer of civility and respect for minorities to win their majority. This is a scorched earth approach to getting re-elected because it appeals to the worst in people, the lowest common denominator. Their fear of the "other" and those that look or think different. It's a gamble I hope they lose. On another note, it should be said that the most popular politician in Quebec right now is Justin Trudeau. An educated, urban, bilingual, multiculturalist who also happens to be the offspring of the most reviled Federalist in Quebec history. Figure that one out.

    1. The St. Jean Baptiste Society already planted 101 crosses (sans burning) at the site of the new super hospital in NDG/Westmount, as a sign of intimidation and hostility towards the English community. Apparently they object to the fact that it will be a bilingual hospital, offering services in both English and French. By their standards, no hospital should offer services in any language but FRENCH (much like the French-only hosptial in Cornwall that refuses to treat English patients). If the doctors and nurses cannot understand you, or visa-versa, then you do not deserve emergency medical services by their logical. That's right, a hospital that works in BOTH languages is unacceptable. We're already seen this attitude is popping up in current Montreal hospitals.

I've said the same thing repeatedly here for years. Quebec is going down a slippery slope. Right now Quebec's "cleansing" methods are of a bureaucratic nature, but there are strong signs it's headed towards cleansing through physical force and violence. Bill 60 is the verbal flame that will start the fire...wait, watch and see.

I keep saying it, read the book Ten Green Bottles for a striking parallel of the situation in Quebec with that of Vienna in the 1920's and 30's. This kind of thing can happen anywhere if the flames of hate are fanned unchecked and left uncontrolled.

I want to re-iterate what Apple iigs very astutely points out, Humanity is a lot like an alcoholic, it needs to check itself constantly not to fall off the wagon of previous deadly mistakes. What happened in nazi Germany, in Serbia, in Rhodesia, massive ethnic cleansing..is never too far away from us and it always starts the same way, with governments pushing the envelope a little bit at a time so you don't notice. If you are careless and apathetic, they manage to go the whole way till they self-destruct.

Pay attention Folks, those of you who think the charter has nothing to do with you and you support it....evaluate the intention behind why they are trying to do this, you will discover, it has EVERYTHING to do with you. Fail to defend Rights and Freedoms today and it will haunt you tomorrow.

Stay vigilant and denounce the wrong-doings.

      Delete
    7. AnecTOTE: My concern is we've already passed the point of no return in regards to the Charter. Once the official government (which the PQ is, like it or not) publicly spoke about it as policy and rule, to the point producing pictorial charts VISUALLY TARGETING ethnic minorities, they created a very dangerous and volatile situation.

I hate to say it for sounding like I'm generalizing, but the majority of Quebec's population is unfortunately very small minded, ignorant and poorly educated. Disagree? Well how else can you explain the Parti Quebecois re-elected repeatedly over the past 40 years, despite their destructive track record? How else do you explain such vast support for the Charter of Values? Anyone with even some glimmer of intelligence can see right through the transparency of the Charter and what it really is about.

Back on what I was saying, even if the Charter were rescinded, the damage is already done and the call has gone out. They've essentially put out a "wanted" poster for ethnics and visibly minorities, and telling the public we need your help resolving "the problem"....if not, the state will fall. Mix all this blame and scapegoating with a failing and collapsing economy, and the consequences are quite frightening.

When Karfl Marx said, "Religion is sthe opiate of the masses." he was not referring to putting them to sleepbut saying the Church is where people find reief from the trials of life. The PQ are trying to say religion causes the daily trials we face. I have sent a letter to C ardinal Turcotte of Quebec asking that he make the priests in Quebec aware that the existence of the Church in Quebec is in danger. I have aked that he relay to them that the people must support their Church or lose it. Ed

      Hey Mr. S.
I make 'what' sound like a bad thing? I don't understand.
Actually in the Christian Bible we are told God will provide. From Jewish history we have learned God will provide as he gave manna to the Jewish people fleeing from Egypt. He no longer spreads it on the ground, for Christians he puts it in a super market and leaves it to us how it should be paid for after we give him his ten percent and render unto Marois that which is Marois.. At Ararat he said replenish the Earth. he didn't specify numbers so the Church decided as many as possible just to be on the safe side. and get more money. You make no sense Saugy everybody knows that people are bigger than rabbits. It was also at Ararat that God said men babies should be circumcized. He even had it done to his own son Jesus. Christians are often in denial. The reason that the Lord's privates are hidden on a crucifix is so that Catholics won't have to face the act that their Lord Jesus is a Jew. Ed.

      Delete
    3. Ed: I was pertaining to what you wrote at the end of your prior comment "...the people must support their Church or lose it. I doubt their devious church will be totally lost, but it certainly has taken a pruning. For all the good it did those way oversized families, if the church was eliminated due to natural attrition, not by force in any way, it would be no great loss.

Please understand I have no problem with individual Catholics, just most religious institutions, including the synagogue. Houses of worship of all types are fine for those who need something to cling to, but over the years, let's face it, scriptures can be interpreted as many ways as there are fingerprints on living people in the world. Much of what I have read and heard in sermons, while at times interesting depending on the abilities of the speaker or writer, more often than not contains biases, coercion unsubstantiated events and false doctrines. Does that mean I don't have any moral fiber because I'm secular? Does that make me void of spirituality? Am I therefore impious?

I like to believe I have governed my life in an honest, forthright and clean manner, and nobody has advised me I have done otherwise. Too bad the vast majority of those TV evangelists can't say the same.

How many popes have killed and been killed within the Vatican ? How is it the pope gets to live in the lap of luxury while billions in the world are starving without a proper place to live? Isn't a vow of perpetual poverty requisite for joining the Church?

A friend of a friend whose parent died a couple of years ago was in need of a minyan to recite evening prayers for the departed. He asked for the assistance of some men who were members of a particular synagogue, and they refused because he was not a member of their synagogue. I saw this as a sin because it's a significant mitzvah, and to refuse to help a person asking for such help, at least to me is inappropriate and extremely off-putting.

Finally, let's face it. Most wars that have taken place in the world are over religion ever since religion gained a foothold in the world. I'm not saying we should attempt to make the world secular like Quebec is trying to do, but this is manifesting into a religious war. 9/11 was another example of this. The Holocaust was another. Here's an argument for you, Ed. The Lord is God, the Lord is one.

    4. FROM ED
Now Mr. S, you know very well the religion is not the building it is in the hearts of people. As Thomas Aquinas said when they asked him, "What do you think of your Church now?" referring to the infamous doings of the Borgias.. He answered, " I think it's wonderful. The fact that the Church survived shows that the Pope is not the Church, the people are the Church.."
Churches and synagogue buildings are essential to bring good people together in the name of our Lord God. Yes, there is only one God and his son Jesus (who was born a Jew) commands us to praise God, his Father and ours. Our great country Canada that we are always bragging about became what it is because of a solid foundation created by believers of the Gospel and Torah. These were religious men, thank God; who wrote the ten commandments right into our laws.
Too many people who claim to be secular like yourself, try to make religion look bad as an excuse to not have to comply to the two great commandments, (i.e. "Love God and love your neighbour as much as you love yourself.")
Pointing out the indiscretions of Priests, Bishops and Rabbis does not excuse us from acting in the way we were created by God.Those who don't believe in crteation will come up before Giod day and he will show them what the 'Big Bang Theory' really is. It is just a TV show or really great piece of tail. Ed

That will basically spell the end of the Quebec Model. Taxes will have to be rocketed up and spending will have to be slashed just to make ends meet. Not somewhere I'd want to live or invest in.

Criminal charges were laid against four former members of the Sûreté du Québec’s top brass Monday.

According to media reports, charges of fraud, theft and abuse of power were laid by summation against Richard Deschênes, the former director of the force, Steven Chabot, the former assistant director, Alfred Tremblay and Jean Audette. They will appear in court to face the charges on Feb. 13.

It is alleged the group used the police force’s funds for illicit purposes, namely to top up a retirement bonus. The charges follow a year-long investigation by a special committee ordered by former public security minister Sylvain Bergeron to investigate the matter.

What an amazing letter, succinct! From: The Gazette (Letters)

"Quebec, Archie Bunker, and a nightmare on Elm street:

Quebec is on a trip down memory lane, re-enacting its own version of some classic television and Hollywood fare.

In the spirit of that ground-breaking sitcom from the 1970s, All in the Family, the charter of Quebec values has provided us with innumerable comments that would do Archie Bunker proud. The “Meatheads” are left staring in disbelief as the words of lawyers, educators, human rights organizations, healthcare professionals and businessmen are scoffed at and trivialized.

We are in the middle of the Twilight Zone where issues such as head coverings, religion and language are what occupy the minds of politicians rather than standard government concerns such as the economy, infrastructure, healthcare and education.

In addition, the Charbonneau Commission has revealed to us that Quebec is a real life version of Hollywood’s many great gangster films.

Those in the population who see very clearly that Quebec’s dire financial and social situation is heading toward A Nightmare on Elm Street are akin to a movie audience watching helplessly as the lead character obliviously walks into the danger zone.

Like Hollywood celebrities who spiral downward and need to hit rock bottom before finally turning themselves around, perhaps the Quebec political class needs to bring the province into total ruin before they, and those who support government dictating what a person wears on their head and curtailing use of the English language, will collectively have their Edith Bunker light bulb moment and finally understand the repercussions.

      exactly what I've been saying.

Seppies cannot be convinced with logic.

We have decades of history on that.

Now that people start to realize that seppies cannot be reasoned with the goal should be to help dismantle and destroy Quebec society.

As anglophones and immigrants we are constantly told it's not a culture that we are part of or represent etc.

Once Quebec is in ruin then seppies will finally understand how destructive their politics and thinking is.

Look at Queen of Angles closing. The result of decades of Bill 101 and dismantling the english society in Montreal and erasing it.

It's time for Francophone culture and institutions to be bankrupted etc in the same ways.

None of the institutions are meant to represent, care for, or help anglo's or immigrants.

These institutions represent our oppressors not our friends.

      Ukraine is the model.

I think we've exhausted the subject regarding the charter etc...we should keep talking about it definitely, as an aside at this pt, on this blog, but I would like to humbly suggest a future Post from you prodding the other provincial Party Leaders about changing the conversation, RIGHT NOW, to the poor track record of present minority government so far. Mostly, how inadequately this government has handled the other pressing issues and how it has grievously neglected the Economy, Infrastructure, Healthcare and harp on how they, the present chiefs, have been completely irresponsible toward the population of this province not undertaking and managing the REAL issues that plague quebec after a year and a half in power. And how they have wasted precious funds on a ridiculous project that should never have dominated the priorities. Ram home the point they have been incompetent and wasteful.

Where is the CAQ? Doesn't Francois Legault want the job of Premier? Isn't that why he even formed this new party? Did that ambition die?

Where is Mme David, Quebec Soilidaire... in all this? Why isn't she asking the hard questions to the PQ every time a microphone is shoved on her face?

Where are the Liberals..AGAIN??? They should be having a field day with this one ...and turning the question back to the citizens of this province. "Would you rather the government hold useless Hearings on bill 60, or would you rather your government deal with more pressing problems of jump-starting your Economy which at this time is on Life-support, it has to bribe companies to stay here and you taxpayers are subsidizing the so-called jobs they are falsely creating?

WHERE ARE THE PARTY STRATEGISTS? (For heaven sakes)

Start with calling a press conference and showing everyone an account of what has been spent already on bill 60 and how that could have gone to repair unsafe overpasses.

No more commentary on the charter, (make it loud and clear) and crank up the volume on present government negligence and make people feel guilty for not sticking to the real issues and demanding excellence of those they elected. Show a tally on your websites of how much money the have wasted so far....go viral with this info....and repeat, repeat, repeat.

Do any of these party Leaders actually want the job of running this province? Or are they all too afraid and are just buying time coasting to a pension?

There is a very small window of opportunity here....WAKE UP and grab it, or your inertia will be our downfall.

  23. The Charter has nothing to do with religion.
If it really was about secularism/laicité they would have stuck with the original name. However that would have opened them up to too many (righteous) accusations of being bald-faced liars, since Christianity is going to be untouched by this Charter.

The proof is in what it targets: religions that require visible proof of devotion to god, such as Judaism and Islam. Christianity requires no such thing, and the small crosses that some people like Maria Mourani wear are an affectation, but not a religious requirement.

The most obvious, glaring proof is the crucifix that every politician in the province, from Premier Marois on down, insists will never be stripped from the National Assembly.

Nope, this is the Charter of Nothing but Catholics allowed in Quebec. The PQ will continue to sing Xmas carols in front of the Christmas tree in the National Assembly when the Charter passes.

Because let's face it: if the PQ had truly tried to pass a secular-only law, they'd lose the regions.

You got that right. The amazing thing is the Liberals do it over and over. Look at the flip flopping over the charter. They are without principles.

Liberals get scared off by positions. The moment they think they should do something then they start to wonder how the toothless francophone in the hinterland will perceive it.

The politicians live to satisfy the welfare francophones outside Montreal.

The rest of the province is just along for the ride and to supply the money.

Charest should be ashamed of himself. Holding off the corruption inquiry and prevented the maps from being redrawn.

IF the problems of Quebec get solved then the shakedown of Canada cannot continue.

      All Quebec politicians know that.

They say they want good roads that last forever. In reality the love roads that collapse and need to be redone early. It creates work for their friends and union members and creates employment for otherwise unemployable francophones.

Every politican says the right words "We need better infrastructure" but in reality thy are all super happy with the status quo.

Fixing a democratic deficit is not to Quebec benefit.

Francophones need to lie and manipulate if they are going to "win" and keep fleecing Canada for money and bullying it's anglophone/immigrant citizens.

I have always had a sneaking suspicion that the quebec nationalists (this includes the PLQ), have wanted to secretly sabotage Montreal. Look at it. Everything that is falling apart, is falling apart here, on the island. But plenty of money gets pumped into the rest of quebec, especially quebec city. Montreal wears a different face from the Roq, and it gets punished for it, consistently, that's another argument for partition.

Kevin, when you and other Monday mornng quarter backs judge Jean Charest you should remember his positiion at the timer. Charest stood alone and walked a
tight rope between the English, who never supported him and the threats of the merciless unions and gangsters. When Ducheneau showed a little courage and support, Charest moved a ahead, still at great risk. With the evidence Ducheneau had been sitting on Charest was able to form the Charbonneau inquiry. The public had been asking for the investigation but none of the politicians were asking, they knew the danger and were all afraid
Charest acted bravely and it cost him his career. We should be thankful. Ed

Elections Quebec. Redistributing voting districts so that we have fair representation when we step into the voting booth. Charest fought against this tooth and nail when Elections Quebec tried to eliminate rural ridings in 2007. He fought it again in 2009, and it was only settled in 2012.

Why? Because the Liberals didn't want to offend the people who live in places where there are more cows than people.

The rest of what you wrote is absolute nonsense since you seem to think that, contrary to all the evidence, it was Charest who wanted to call the corruption inquiry.
In the Real World it was the ADQ who started demanding an inquiry while Charest was leading a minority government. Six months later the PQ joined in.
Charest never wanted an inquiry and tried to bury it by hiring Duchesneau -- but Duchesneau LEAKED his report when he realized Charest was going to bury it under the rug.

    2. Cutie,

Nothing can be done. Quebec society is the problem. The close relationship between the unions, mafia and govt is the problem.

Really nothing can change without "the Quebec model" going out the window. That's inconceivable to any Quebec politicians so we get our eventual decline.

If we want to cut down on corruption we need to start opening up Quebec to other construction compaies and labour from Ontario etc. Not goign to happen obviously. Nobody would eve hire a seppie for anything ever.

This is the only way to get the mafia and union companies to the fringes. Let big international companies in to change the landscape.

The problem of course is that the $50/hr workers that do nothing all day don;t work for non quebec companies.

The entire Quebec model is setup to provide employment for otherwise unemployable goons, criminals and the lazy.

Dismantling the Quebec model leaves all the francophone quebecers without any jobs.

Imagine if people started getting fired for incompetence or fraud. There wouldn;t be anybody left.

Quebec, taking it's playbook from the USA on this considers it's construction industry "too big to fail". IE it can never be allowed to suffer or collapse.

Just like in the USA where that means the fraud of wall street lawyers continues. In Quebec that is an endless license to steal. Quebec will never crack down on the construction unions.

They virtually control the voting block of seppies.

      This is all window dressing.

The music will only stop once we are bankrupt.

This is why it's so exciting to see Sears, Humpty Dumpty, Bombardier etc close down or move out.

Every job we lose brings us a little bit closer to the end game of Quebec breaking up into civil war and then partitioning into Quebec and Upper Canada.

I am shocked. I am disappointed. Here we have an Editor who's blessed with a keen interest in English and minority rights, who's a devotee of Quebec's national religion - Hockey and who evidently is a MOT (member of the tribe of Abraham, Jacob and Isaac for those of you who've been living on some other planet), and he hadn't thought of this. Of what? LES NORDIQUES!

How likely do you think Mr. Bettman will be to answer the prayers of the good folks of Quebec City and the rest of Quebec. Mssrs Lebaume and Peladeau are busy spending our millions of tax dollars building their Nouveau Colisée for the resurection of Les Nordiques. All the while Mme Marois and M. Drainville are busy promoting their new law to ban those who look too Jewish from any public function. Not like there are too many workers with kippahs applying for jobs at this new Colisseum - but that's kind of beside the point. Because not only will Jews that are too visible be expunged from places like publicly owned hockey arenas, but they are to be banished from working in hospitals and universities.

I can just see it now. Bettman and such team owners as Daryl Katz (a generous donor to Toronto's Mount Sinai), or Henry Samueli (the son of Holocaust survivors), or Ed Snider (a generous supporter of Chabad Lubavitch) or Larry Tannenbaum (one of the founders of CIJA, the successor to the Canadain Jewish Congress) are just going to sit on there derrières and approve a franchise for Quebec City while Quebec beats up on its Jews. Yeah. Right.

Now, Mr. Editor, why don't you have a go at that little scenario. I'm sure the voters in Quebec City, in fact voters all across Quebec will be ever so thankful to Mme Marois and M. Drainville for an empty Colisée. Just think. They built it and they never came. And all because of the Péquiste's cynical grab for a majority government.

    3. Who said QC was getting another team anyway? I don't remember the NHL saying anything of the sort. It just something else that Quebecers think that they are owed when they deserve nothing. another point is the C$ heading south and the impact that would have(if its feasible). Frenchies rant and rave how quebec is the center of the hockey universe with considering the popularity of Toronto, Vancouver, Edm etc. If any market deserves another team it is Toronto considering the Leafs account for probably close to half league revenue.

      Delete
    4. From The Rationalist:

Assuming that there is any validity to this Bill 60 (which I do not), we keep hearing that in the best interests of Quebec and its future, the issues surrounding the presence of the "intégristes" must be dealt with now. That for the "mieux vivre ensemble", sacrifices must be made. No matter that intégristes and the wearing of a hijab or kippah are far from synonymous. Muslims and Jews are being asked to make the sacrifice, to throw their more observant co-religionists under the bus, for the greater good.

Okay, so what is the majority, what are French Canadians prepared to sacrifice? Well, they get to keep the crucifix which is displayed at most public buildings of a certain age - and of course, which is prominently placed over the Speaker's chair in the National Assembly. And they get to keep wearing a cross at work - so long as it's not oversized. And they keep their stranglehold on the Quebec civil service, where less than 1% of the employees are anglophone. In fact, no quid pro quo.

Guess what folks, there is a price to pay. And although there has never been any guarantee that the Nordiques will return, one thing can be said for certain: Never will an NHL team play in a facility which discriminates in its hiring practices. And never will a respectable multi-national company concerned about its public image lend its name to anything that can be seen as anti-Semitic or racist. So bye bye, les Nordiques.

And just to think that Mme Marois and M. Drainville didn't have the courage to ask Quebecers whether they agreed to have their dream for an NHL team returning to Quebec City destroyed.

And that will be just one of the items in this game of quid pro quo. What about the Palais des congès in Montreal and the Centre des conférences in Quebec City. As word gets out about this hateful law, and it is - it's already attracted coverage from the New York Times, the Washington Post and the Atlantic, attention will be drawn to the revulsion of holding conferences in a facility that discriminates against Jews who look too Jewish and Muslims who look too Muslim. In a province that proposes to remove them from public service!

So you see, there will be a sacrifice - and it won't just be the handful of workers currently free to show their religious convictions.

It's time that Quebec politicians turn their attention away from the show-trial organized by M. Drainville in the Salon Rouge to the fututre and the devestating effects his cynical project is likely to have on our - Mieux Vivre Ensemble!

Don;t be so naive. That won;t happen in Quebec. We need to have a functioning justice system or that to happen.

That would be like charging the mafia we all know and see everyday, politicians or the people we see at Charbonneau on wire taps.

The judge will say "the worker has been exploited and has no way to pay the money back. To the "company (ie us) it's only a small amount" and it will be forgiven.

Quebec likes to forgive not punish.

Another reason we get into these messes.

The criminals know they are speaking to Barrak Obama when they deal with Quebec legal system and culture. "Don;t cross that red line" or I'll say stop again...

All the criminals and others at the Charbonneau remind us of this over and over.

There is no stigma in doing business with criminals. (wink wink)

I believe in second chances and rehabilitation. lol!

Taking money from union worker at the city of Montreal and giving it back to the citizens?

      Chance of this? Absolutely zero.

The workers will claim they spent the money etc. All will be swept under the carpet as business as usual in Quebec.

A criminal lawyer once explained to me. "My clients steal as their job. They are repeat clients. That's how it works. Stealing is their business and career just like somebody else is a bus driver. There is no such thing as rehabilitation. That's make believe for the public."

The Quebecois culture of "forgiving" amplifies the behavior of criminals.

Quebec is running an amnesty program for the construction companies so they can be around to steal from us another day. Under no other circumstances would you ever save something like a construction company.

All the emplyee's are from the union pool. It's just a question of what job site they show up at.

The only people being protected are the 2-3 people at the top of the construction firms that are being "forgiven".

The scams will re-emerge the moment Charbonneau spotlight has ended.

The Quebec politicians WANT this to happen.

  31. From The Rationalist:

In reviewing the list of the Jewish NHL team owners and Googling them, discovering their remarkable commitment to community and their generosity; realizing that amongst them is a child of Holocaust survivors, I am reminded of a growing realization in the Jewish community. For too long the depiction of Holocaust victims has been of those who were ordinary citizens, assimilated into their communities. Hence the horror of their suddenly being isolated and ear-marked for murder.

What has not been emphasized enough until now is the extent and degree to which Orthodox Jews were targeted and murdered. Their Jewishness was conspicuous, or as Quebec chooses to describe them, ostentatious.

I think what those who are not Jewish need to understand that Jews are becoming increasingly conscious that a large number of those who perished were not like Anne Frank, but were more like the Jews we see today who are being targeted by Bill 60. The men wore beards and kippahs, the women dressed modestly. They kept the Sabbath and they were dedicated to remaining intrinsically Jewish. Although most of us in Montreal have in large measure assimilated, we nevertheless feel a very strong kinship to the Orthodox, to the descendants of the first Jews who were targeted and whose communities were all but wiped out.

Mme Marois and M. Drainville and those in favour of the Charter should know that no wedge can be drawn between the inconspicuous and conspicuous Jews no matter what efforts they make to label them ostentatious and beyond Quebec's values.

They will not be isolated. Quebec will.
