Meet the Editor.... Philip Berlach

Doing what I do best..talking!
I don't want this post to be a big deal, but it has been a long time in coming.

I told readers long ago that I wasn't a political personality or any name that they would recognize, I have long toiled in the background, both politically and obscurely in the business world, all my life.

And so revealing my identity is a bit anti-climatic.

There are those who oppose my positions who have screamed from the highest rafters of vigile.net that I am somehow illegitimate because my identity remained hidden.
Ask me if I care.

Actually I'm quite surprised, because friends, family and the many readers who I converse with, have known my identity for a long time and I always expected someone to leak, but amazingly, the hundreds of readers, journalists, friends and acquaintances never let on.
I remain truly impressed.

When I started this blog, I was the owner of a franchise chain with stores throughout Quebec. Previously I was co-owner of another retail chain which operated across Eastern Canada and that for over thirty years.
You can understand that for business purposes, I didn't want my blogging to affect others with which I had a business relationship, but having retired last year, the last barrier to declaring myself had passed.

It is a bit strange, because my anonymity allowed me the freedom to talk about people I know personally, friend and foe, with impunity, and that I shall miss.
But one of the drawbacks in remaining anonymous is that the media tends not to take you seriously. I've been offered dozens of interviews on radio and television but have until now demurred.

That will change Monday, when I'll do an interview on CJAD as myself with Barry Morgan at two o'clock.
I wanted readers to know beforehand, otherwise it would have been disloyal.

So let me tell you a little about myself since very few loyal readers know me personally.
I was born here in Quebec to immigrant parents and attended English school in the PSBGM, an acronym that only true Anglo Montrealers understand.

As a successful entrepreneur who co-owned and operated a retail chain across Eastern Canada, I was charged with running the 'field' and so I spent 30 years travelling the backwoods of Eastern Canada, each week flying and driving to every major (and minor town) from Toronto to Saint Jean, NB.

During those years, I developed an intimate knowledge of these regions and made many friends, anglophone and francophone and even natives.
I remember having dinner with Jacques Duchesneau and his then new girlfriend who told me she hailed from a tiny town up in the Abitibi, one that she was sure, I never heard of.
I asked her to allow me three guesses and on the second named LaSarre, to her astonishment and everyone at the table. I then described the town as best I could, because honestly there's not much that stands out.

So after a couple of decades visiting these places, I think I've developed a keen understanding of the mentality, the personality and the vibe and rhythm of each community.
I've actually lived two lives, one in English and one in French. After a couple of days in the Saguenay or Abitibi, my brain would switch over to French and yes, even in my nighttime dreams. Upon return to Montreal, the switch occurred again and I once more reverted to my Anglophone roots.

I've been labelled an 'angryphone' by my opponents, but nothing could be farther from the truth.
I choose to stay in Quebec because it has been and remains a wonderful home.
To those who believe I oppose Francophone's right to maintain their language and culture, nothing could be farther from the truth.
But I do disagree with the politics of language and believe militants use it as a wedge issue to drive Quebecers madly towards sovereignty.
Do I care if immigrants are forced into French schools? Not a whit.

But defending the French language shouldn't include persecuting Anglos with ridiculous and vindictive rules over signage.
The idea that the children of an American or British immigrant families must attend French school and that they will somehow adopt French as their culture is deluded fanaticism and fantasy that is disrespectful to the anglo community as well as good sense.
These rules are misguided at best and  vindictive at the worst.
Such is the pettiness and indeed the nastiness, of most language militants.

I can argue with those that demand English descriptors on stores with English words in their name, but cannot countenance those who object to names like Reitmans or Bentley.
It is not I, the dangerous angryphone, but rather these people, who are nothing but linguicists  ( not to be confused with linguists)

We are told over and over again by both Liberal and PQ governments that we are a founding nation and valued citizens, but actions deem us interlopers.

Few francophones understand the daily pounding Ethnics and Anglos suffer in the francophone media.
English and Anglophones are portrayed as an evil threat to the existence of francophones, as well as immigrants and ethnics and let's not even bring up the demonization of Quebec Muslims.

At any rate I've been involved with politics since the ripe young age of ten or twelve when I helped put up signs for the then NDP candidate, Charles Taylor, who was running for the NDP in St. Laurent.

Since then I've grown to become an organizer and fund-raiser  on the federal, provincial and municipal level.
I shall nor divulge who I've worked for other than the federal Conservatives and the provincial Liberals, the others never contracted for that.

Most of whom of I worked for, hired me on a consultation basis and are entitled to confidentiality. Anybody who wishes to announce my implication in their campaign is free to do so, I am unashamed of any of the political work that I did.

Along the way, and for many years, I served as a Consular representative for Liberia in Quebec and an honorary Boy Scout Commissioner.
I am past-president of the St. John Ambulance foundation, charged with raising money and safeguarding the nest egg of that honourable organization.
For a couple of years, I served on a committee supporting the Canadian Armed Forces, that was charged with encouraging employers to treat part-time reservist employees with the utmost respect, giving them time off without penalty, while serving our country.

I've known the richest and most powerful politicians in Canada, as well as the less than reputable.
There was a time where I would and could drive my car onto Parliament Hill and park at the front door.

Those days are gone, just ask Thomas Mulcair who was cited for blowing by a security checkpoint a while back.

As for my family, I am married to my college sweetheart, this for forty years. We met in the very first year of the existence of Vanier college in Ville St. Laurent,  back in the year God knows when.

We've got two children, a daughter who married an Anglo here in Montreal and has just given birth to my third grandchild, James.
My son David, is one of those famous McGill doctor graduates who has fled Quebec (according to the militant narrative), but the truth be told, could not secure a job anywhere in Quebec.

He is safely ensconced in Brooklyn, New York, where his talent is appreciated, and readers he is not the only Quebec doctor forced to flee, he is part of a huge expat community.

He and his lovely wife have two children, our grandchildren, who are growing up away from us here in Montreal, a fate suffered by so many Anglo parents in Quebec, where contact is reduced to family reunions and holidays.

That's it!
I'm not going to dwell on personality and now that you know who I am, I'd like to get back to blogging about what affects us all.
I really want our relationship to remain the same. I hope you'll still refer to me as EDITOR, I've gotten used to the moniker.

And so let's go in....

I'll start with a scoop.
I have it on impeccable authority that Michael Applebaum (the ex-mayor of Montreal) is allegedly dead to rights.
I've been told that he  is going to jail and this from insiders, who are in the know.

    1. Actually, more should be said. You disclosed your name to me sometime ago on your "private" website. I didn't blow your cover out of courtesy and respect; furthermore, I imagined doing so would not have resulted in anything positive. Quite the contrary. I figured exposing you may have compromised the blog and your editorials.

I like to think other contributors to this blog share my sentiments.

I'm glad that you were able to, for lack of a better term, make Quebec "work for you". Then again, I imagine you were well into your 20s when the language nonsense started and already very established in your enterprises. I was still in high school when Bill 22 became law, and right from the get-go I saw the injustice of it, but at that point could not figure out exactly why, except that my mother tongue and background didn't fit this socio-political model. Bill 101 just tightened the screws even more, and hardened my resolve.

I saw these laws as inimical, certainly for the minorities who were not of the majority's ilk. When the PQ was elected, I promise you and all your readers and contributors that I saw Quebec someday devolving into what it has now become. While René Lévesque was seen as the benevolent leader, he was supporting a stable of vengeful individuals, many of whom were in his cabinet that he couldn't stand. They absolutely didn't share his more logical vision of founding a separatist because Lévesque, to state the least, wasn't attempting to act as an exclusionist. Others in his cabinet and much of the membership was made of of rabid exclusionists, hence leaders, one after another, were constantly being thrown to the lions or under the bus.

It was only later that I connected the injustice of the laws, at least to me individually, to the positive contributions my ancestors made. My ancestors and I never were the reviled WASPs for whom these language laws were targeting, but we were lumped together with them unjustifiably again because we weren't of the ilk of the majority.

When I started feeling the injustices of Quebec's "new order", I wasn't even aware of the deleterious influences of the Roman Catholic church upon its flock, and it became obvious the more I read about the Quiet revolution, and thanks to editorialist Michel Gratton and his book French Canadians. He didn't speak English as a small child growing up in the Ottawa suburb of Vanier, and at the recommendation of the priest serving their parish ended up boarding at a Catholic school on the Quebec side of the Ottawa River in Papineauville.

He wrote of the maltreatment he suffered not only at the hand of his peers, but of the school faculty as well. It was through that book I learned of la revanche des berceaux. He wrote of the French education system and the role of Paul-Émile Cardinal Léger with the utmost of scathing rebuke. Considering the joke of an education system and an upper clergy that was to be feared more than revered, what can I say?

While the reviled WASPs were building Quebec, the majority was being led down a destructive path hence the Quebec we see today. I suppose a half century (since the Quiet Revolution) has not adequately shaken off the crap of the 200 years preceding the last 50 and what you see today is the result of this loathsome devolution.

Editor, how my peers those a few years older than me, like you, managed to live within this framework is almost a marvel. Prior to leaving (29 years ago tomorrow, November 4th) I felt a feeling of ill-being.

Thanks for creating this blog, and have a happy retirement with all your new grandchildren. Should my one son one day sire offspring, I hope I'm around to enjoy them as you enjoy yours.

    2. Mr. S very well put, the hardliners have just replaces Roman Catholic Doctrine with the doctrine of "Laicité" the PQ hardliners (including the media) are nothing more than the priests of this new cult and as always the people are denied the truth. Incredible that when I talk to french public high school graduates, they know nothing of the world outside of Quebec and their English skills are poor. I recently worked with a young woman who refused to speak English and denied the existence of the rest of Canada. It's like they are creating a generation of child soldiers who will do and believe whatever they are told.

Phil, you will always be EDITOR to me and I will address you that way. . Your personality has long ago settled in my mind that you are a personage that demands such respect. I remember one time after just receiving a private email from you I started to answer on the blog and had typed your name in the box. Fortunately my old brain woke up and changed iot but if I ever do it accidentally feel free to give me a kick in the ass on the blog. You told me a while back that you were going to reveal your identity but at the time I didn't think you would as I couldn't understand the reason for it. Anyway, in our battles for our homeland when the next election comes let me know if you need a writer or history researcher for interviews etc, I would do as I have in the past. and it would be free the same as you have done for all of us. Mr.Sauga, I never heard of Michel Gratton but I disagree with his view of Cardinal Leger. Cardinal Leger always struck me as a kindly priest. I met him several times when I used to go to Bordeaux Jail on Sunday afternoons to play for the Salvation Army and Catholic Services. As an Anglican I played at my own Church in the morning. I remember once when he was questioning me about the Salvationists, he said, "There is no wrong Church. there is only one God and we praise him differently but love him the same." At the Second Vatican Council he led the reform against antisemitism in his work 'The Renewed Church'. As a Caradinal he lived in luxury here but left to live among and help the lepers of Cameroon. He was a refined gentle man who spoke impecable English and always was smiling as I recall. Ed

    1. Ed: Do realize I was only conveying Mr. Gratton's view, and neither you nor I were subject to the tyranny of the Roman Catholic church. I never met Cardinal Léger unlike you, so I don't doubt what you have written. On the surface, most clergymen are very personable, but as we've learned over the last 20 years or so, there was more immoral behaviour happening on the other side of the confessional.

Please realize I have nothing against followers, quite the contrary, for I pity them for having been led astray, as I wrote above, by deleterious influences within their church. Politics within the synagogue and some of the administrators at my Hebrew school did more to turn me off orthodox Judaism than my pestering grandmother who, when I was knee-high to a grasshopper endlessly said to me "Every Jewish boy should go to synagogue".

My father had a dispute with one of the board members of our local synagogue over paying dues. He offered to pay his full dues, but over time and that wasn't good enough for the treasurer who wanted all the dues paid upfront, so my father quit the synagogue. Prior to that, I'm sure it was my grandmother who through my father pushed my brother and me to go to the synagogue every Saturday for the last hour of services (11am-noon). Sure as your born, pigs would fly before I'd wake up on a Saturday morning before 8am for the 8:45am start of services. I found it a frustrating experience because by the time I read one line of Hebrew, the congregation was on the next page!

Our rabbi there was a very intelligent, very kindly individual, and we were lucky to have him at the helm for a good 35 years or so. My deal with respect to religion is don't coerce me, or you turn me off. It took the Québécois two centuries to shake off the awful coercion they endured, but unfortunately they were bottled up for so long they're still catching up to the real world...well...sort of.

Finally, I would like to commend you for your noble commitments to the community.

  5. Dear EDITOR,
I've been following your blog for about six months now and just wanted to congratulate you on the wonderful and invaluable job you're doing shining the klieg light on the separatist movement and their nefarious methods. I have been active on and off in denouncing and standing up against these dangerous, well-educated thugs, because that's all they are at their core. It doesn't take much to discern that many of them are proficient in dictatorial and totalitarian methods learned from the infamous "masters" of history. What's sickening is that they do it so deviously and blatantly as those of us who can see their true colours can attest. It's unfortunate that their supporters, the clueless masses of the regions, don't even realize that they are being trapped and exploited by their own leaders. We all know what I'm referring to. Anyway, I'm speaking to the converted as usual. This blog should be in French if it isn't already so it acts as a counter-weight to the PQ's pathological revisionist history propaganda and lying. Thanks and I'll try to listen in on Monday!
One last thing, please don't just use "Anglos" to describe Montrealers (I am not using "Quebecer" because it does not represent who we are) who are being oppressed by these criminals and whose children were and are forced to leave. Their are many with Italian, Greek and other ethnic group family names who belong to the diaspora and who have also suffered along with Anglos for decades.

Vince, Anglo refers to the language, not the people. It doesn't stand for Anglo saxon. it stands for the language that you and I and the Greek, Italian and other groups you mention are all using. We have to say anglo, it's the language that's being attacked. When we say Anglo we are refering to the language and the people using it. . Ed

The other..amateurish thing she does, is to comment by incessantly asking useless questions. A rather tied strategy, and primarily a stupid one if you think about it. To continuously ask random questions only provides others with the opportunity to go just about anywhere they want with their answers and thus turning the responses around and making her look bad. It's a little like a soccer goalie facing a penalty shot. The net is wide open and the shot can be directed just about anywhere, AND some... are just born Strikers!!! LOL

In any event Thank you Sir for providing our community with the opportunity to express how we really feel about Quebec's reality.

  8. @Editor: Thank you so much for all the invaluable hard work you do on this blog and it is so appreciated by those of us that are shut out of communicating with others that are in similar circumstances in this province. So few outlets for us to speak our minds that this blog, even though I found it accidently, has assisted us to express our feelings without recrimination (and no one cares what the trolls have to say).

There are so many separatist sites that are sponsored by government funding but no money is spent by any government to fight back against these separatist language/culture zealots, that blogs like this are a necessity for our communities to at least be able fend off some of the blows that they cast against us, just about on a daily basis. I sincerely hope that "outing" yourself causes you no hardship; I worry about that when I read comments on Vigile.net and the IF website - they are so extreme that they sound threatening even though I have no knowledge of anything physical taking place by these groups as yet. Still scary and I'm sure you're more than capable of handling yourself but remember: We need you much more than you need us! Take care and I will certainly try to catch the show on CJAD! I always look forward to reading your comments every time you publish and will continue to watch for them.

Dont; worry, now that he's elected he can backtrack on supporting anglo's and go back to the status quo.

That's the history of the provincial Liberals and his background.

This is where he "reflects" and decides that Montreal needs a language minister to that is "less destructive" then the PQ one. So he will create a language post telling us it's better he did it then the PQ.

Lets see if he can get outside the usual Liberal operating methods. All his old associates just votes unanimously for bill 99. It's not like principles or values are something that count for his ex-coworkers.

Based on the 100% complete infiltration of fraud and corruption into Montreal at all levels, we need to be cogniscent that there are still scammers and fraud artists hiding in his party.

It would be a major mistake for Montrealers to think that newely voted in people cannot already be corrupt or easily corrupted by the mafia showing up with bags of cash at their houses this morning.

The system hasn;t changed at all. Only a few of the actors.

Agreed, but then this could be said for any of the other parties, had they won, except of course for Melanie J. perhaps.

I have to say, I am not incredibly optimistic, but to be fair, I would not have been, regardless of who got the job. All anyone can expect right now, is that this guy takes care of the immediate problems, those are the priority, and doesn't get too overwhelmed with EVERYTHING that is wrong.

Once he gets going, he needs to implement transparency measures ASAP, if we r even going to begin tackling the corruption problem.

Also, I have a question, regarding Gerald Tremblay. Shouldn't charges be brought up against him for total and complete negligence in administering his Office?

The entire thing happened under his watch, why hasn't this been brought up or even mentioned? It's like he stole into the night (no pun intended, lol), never to be seen or heard of again. As far as I'm concerned, he should be at the front of the line, headed for the big house. Whatever happened, happened under his watch and it is just not good enough to say, "I didn't know"...especially when, YOU ARE ELECTED AND PAID ....TO KNOW.

Am I the only one who feels this way?

Before the Internet, we only got a taste of separatist racism on the occasional episode of 60 Minutes.

Now their hatred of anything non- "pur laine" is on display 24/7.

    4. The list of reasons for "quebec bashing" is so long and diversified that one wouldn't know where to start. Ann is off to a good start: Stop taking your hatred of everything Canadian out on the minorities that are unfortunate enough to reside within the borders of quebec and demand that your politicians stop robbing everyone that pays taxes. The fact that you do this shows you are weak-minded, vindictive, hateful, and insular to the point of being ridiculous. The fact that you were born here, as many of us, does not make you the "superior" race that you purport to be. This province belongs to all of us, is not yours exclusively, and the land belongs to all of Canada not quebec alone. The fact that quebec has to receive money from the ROC, proves that the province has been bought and paid for through the hard work and diligence of all of the citizens of Canada, not quebec alone! Stealing anything through a "vote" is still stealing no matter how you slice it.

When a government sticks their nose into the personal lives of their citizens and pits them against one another, they can expect backlash and plenty of it. All this in the name of separation from what is undeniably one of the best countries in the world. The rest of the world has no idea what all this is about because the francophones are in no way oppressed by anyone in the ROC. Your precious PLQ has done very, very little to help the cause, but the biggest culprits of all are the judges on the Supreme Court of Canada who upheld it's within the Constitution to force Francophone kids to go to French schools for the sake "of protecting" the French language, as if protecting a language spoken by over six million people in one political jurisdiction is necessary. What crap!

So far Rob Ford is known to have one too many, but I don't know about other substances. In any event, this is something which actual Englishmen, let alone lesser mortals such as us (joking!!) would very likely have tremendous difficulty in following Noël Coward’s lead… and so, for good measure, here is the 1931 original song which few so-called “Anglo-Saxons” (never mind Quebec separatists) can follow:

Cat, Coward's song, Mad Dogs and Englishmen was probably the first rap song ever created. It's clipped short sentence style was typical Of Noel whose mother was deaf. he learned to talk that way.
He was a genuis composer and his words and music blended together beautifully. When I play, "I'll See You Again."
I dwell on every chord change each has a beauty that seems to warm and relax me. He understood very well the feelings of those left behind in wartime and seemed to reach out to them, the ones of whom Churchill said, "They also serve who only sit and wait." referring to the Mohers and Wives who had sent what meant most to them. Great men never lost touch with the average person.
I don't however, see any connection between Coward's work and No Dogs. Ed

    Hoho!

  29. Whether Canada ends up as one national government or two national governments or several national governments, or some other kind of arrangement is, quite frankly, secondary in my opinion… And whether Canada ends up with one national government or two governments or ten governments, the Canadian people will require less government no matter what the constitutional status or arrangement of any future country may be.

    • Speech to the Colin Brown Memorial Dinner, National Citizens Coalition, 1994

If Ottawa giveth, then Ottawa can taketh away… This is one more reason why Westerners, but Albertans in particular, need to think hard about their future in this country. After sober reflection, Albertans should decide that it is time to seek a new relationship with Canada. …Having hit a wall, the next logical step is not to bang our heads against it. It is to take the bricks and begin building another home – a stronger and much more autonomous Alberta. It is time to look at Quebec and to learn. What Albertans should take from this example is to become “maitres chez nous".

    1. The huge ...MONUMENTAL difference between Alberta and Quebec is that they are rich an you are poor. LOL

Because THEY ARE RICH...They can call the shots and you can't. It may even be argued that Canada needs Alberta more than Alberta needs Canada. AND as much as it pains you, Quebec needs Canada, ...at least, it needs Canada's money. And this cannot be denied.

So please, do yourselves a favor, and shut the f...up, cause you all have to hope and pray Alberta doesn't decide to break away, when in fact, they're more likely to achieve Independence sooner then you bozos ever will, after 40 yrs of trying. Alberta pulling away, would especially be the kiss of death for this deadbeat province. You can take that to the bank.

My goodness, you don't get it?....YOU'RE TOO DAMN POOR... AND PRIDE IS A LUXURY YOU CAN'T AFFORD.....UNDERSTAND?

  31. Débat sur la charte des valeurs québécoises...Dans un Tim Hortons

At a coffee shop. Everyone is relaxed. This atheist guy (with a full beard) decides it's safe to discuss the islamic veil with the two muslim women. Big mistake... He starts filming... They instantly start yelling, throwing things at him, then they start physically beating him, call him filthy jew, shitty kike race, etc. But it's not over. Beyond the video, outside, they jump on him, throw him on the ground, start savagely beating him. A bunch of respectable muslims, family men and women are standing all around, watching, and encouraging them to beat up the dirty jew, yelling at him with their eyes popping out while he is on the ground being pounded, screaming at him to return to israel. He was lucky to get out of it with just bumps and bruises, they could've seriously hurt him. The poor guy was scared as hell.

"sale race juive" et l'autre jour dans un bus c'était sale race de Québécois...smh

    2. Well there are unfavorable examples of people in every race. They may perhaps be the worst when it comes to theirs and those who introduced this charter to begin with and provided the permission and the opportunity to exercise xenophobia and racism to this extent, are the worst example of theirs.

How do they know he is a jew. Lots of Christin have beards. By the way a jew is not an atheist . Jews are God's chosen people. and very religious. Ed

    8. Ed,
You shouldn't make a blanket statement about the religious views of all Jewish people. Some are atheists. As for Jews being the chosen people, God hasn't done a very good job of protecting them from persecution over the centuries, especially during the Holocaust.
You might excuse the persecution, as many do, by saying that "God moves in mysterious ways" but I doubt that such an entity really exists.

Right here in Quebec Jews were treated dishonorably. I remember as a ten year old a sign an a beach in St.Eustache that said, "No Dogs or jews." My Father pointed out to my Mother with disgust that they capitalized dog but not the word Jews. He said it was probably done as an added insult. Ed

  32. Can somebody explain to me why the journalists are so excited about Rob Ford admitting he smoked crack?

Cokehead, PQ poster boy and friend of Marios, Boisclaire already covered this territory first.

It goes to show how far the culture of corruption in Quebec goes. Think kind of think might not even make the news in montreal.

If it did the next question would be "which mayor are you talking about?"

Did anyone read the interview about the SNC (me Lavalin) book in the National Post.

The founder of SNC *BRAGS* that Americans can;t compete because they arn;t allowed to offer bribes for international contracts.

That's 20 years ago. Sure it's just a few rogue employee's as opposed to the normal culture of Quebec. Yea sure..

It will be intgeresting to see what kind of budget she will produce in the spring if Quebec gets cut..
