French versus English Volume 96

Jewish General Hospital and Quebec Daycare Association to PQ..... "UP YOURS!!"

JGH to PQ...."Non merci"
L'Association des garderies privées du Québec (Que. Assoc. of Private Day cares) has withdrawn its objection to the proposed Charter of Values, not because they are giving up the fight, but rather because they've decided  to ignore the law if passed, damn the consequences.
The daycare association boasts so many employees who wear the headscarf, that to comply with the proposed law, would bring down the network. The spokesman added that the network will continue to hire qualified teachers, even if they wear the veil.
"There is no study that shows that the wearing of  the headscarf affects the development of the child negatively, no cause and effect. I think  Minister Bernard Drainville is talking out of his hat, says Sylvain Lévesque. These are qualified and patient women, who have a vocation and are doing excellent work with children, " he added. Link{fr}
At the assembly of the Association in Montreal last week, members passed this resolution;
"No one will be excluded and dismissed for rules imposed by a state that promotes division, exclusion, strife and discord for ideological purposes. "  Link{fr}
In the meantime the Jewish General Hospital is making its displeasure known, hinting that they too will ignore the law, deeming it unconstitutional.
At the JGH, almost 30% of employees would violate the proposed law, including critical employees, like emergency room doctors. The hospital could not possibly replace these employees and is well aware that the government's assumption that most would remove their symbols is patently naive. ************
Now all this talk of the Charter of Values has raised some ugly sentiments from militant secularists in relation to the Jewish General Hospital.
Hasidic Jew... side locks
As those who follow Quebec politics closely know, a PQ candidate running in a by-election in Montreal was caught up in a controversy when some comments she made on her Facebook page came to light.

Tania Longpré  is the sacrificial lamb running for the PQ in Viau in Montreal, an ethnic riding that will go Liberal no matter what.
In the political vernacular of Quebec politics, she is a "poteau," (pole) someone who puts up election posters on telephone poles to defend the party colours in hostile territory and runs only to satisfy the minority who support the party in the riding.
'POTEAUS'  have no expectation of winning and these candidates are positions usually filled by young party militants hoping for a political payoff should the party they represent win power.

Now Ms. Longpré is not politically discrete,  (Ne pas avoir la langue dans sa poche.) She is actually nothing more than an ignorant loudmouth, with intellect that matches her beauty. (yes..that was meant to be cruel)

When asked on Facebook if she agreed that the Jewish General hospital should drop the word 'Jewish' from its appellation and refrain from performing religious circumcisions, as well as barring Jewish employees of the hospital from wearing peyos, a tradition among ultra-religious Jews, none of whom, by the way, work in the public service, she enthusiastically answered.
"Against, against against."

When asked  by that same interlocutor to clearly and publicly answer whether the Charter of Values should include provisions to remove the word 'Jewish' from the JGH and whether circumcision be banned as well as the kippah and side locks from the public service, Ms. Longpré  answered. "I SAID yes!

 When confronted by reporters, Ms. Longpré backed away from her position claiming that what somebody says on Facebook shouldn't be considered definitive and that she was in fact, the target of a smear campaign. Link{fr}
Digging a little further, reporters found some other embarrassing public statements made by Longpré, including disparaging remarks about the PQ in general and Pauline Marois in particular. Link

By the way, for those rednecks who believe it is unreasonable in the modern age of Quebec secularism for a public institution like a hospital to have a religiously based name (like the 'Jewish General Hospital,' I offer this list of primary care hospitals in Quebec that violate that principle;

Centre hospitalier Hôtel-Dieu d'Amos
Hôpital de Notre-Dame-du-Lac
Centre hospitalier Saint-Francois
Centre hospitalier Notre-Dame du Chemin
Hôpital de l'Enfant-Jésus
Hôpital du Saint-Sacrement
Hôtel-Dieu de Québec
Saint-Francois d'Assise
Hôpital, CLSC et Centre d'hébergement Christ-Roi
Hôpital de Saint-Georges
Hôtel-Dieu de Lévis
Hôtel-Dieu de Sherbrooke (CHUS)

Hôpital Saint-Luc du CHUM
Hôtel-Dieu du CHUM
Centre hospitalier de St. Mary
Hôpital du Sacré-Coeur de Montréal

Hôpital Géneral Juif (Jewish General Hospital)........ unacceptable

The Charter debate has opened the door to some pretty  racist comments, snuck in under the guise of honest debate. If you think the comments on this blog are inflammatory, you haven't been reading the mainstream press lately.

Translation: Lucky the PQ is a good sport. If it was me, symbols would be allowed, but there wouldn't be any synagogues or mosques. Link{fr}

Now I've read thousands of comments in the French press in relation to the Charter and have come to the unscientific conclusion that the readers of the decidedly low-brow Journal de Montreal are much more anti-charter than readers of Le Devoir.
I actually thought it would be the other way around, but then, the vast majority of Le Devoir readers are separatists, so I guess it makes sense.

Here's an exchange in the comments section of the JdeM that caught my attention. It appeared under the story of Tania Longpré

Alain Mourani : She is representative of unbridled xenophobia, which once public, spreads unashamedly. It is for the benefit if the peanut gallery, the PQ understands that its chances of an election win in that riding is equal to zero. Muslims were, until now, the scapegoats, but now the Jews are back ... not to mention that in the Jewish hospital, anyone will be very well cared for, and in French, unlike the claims of the ignorant mass  of morons. It was created because of the opposition of good Catholic clergy Quebec and its political cronies ... to let the Jews practice as physicians ...Now Muslims, tomorrow others and that's the xenophobia in the Republic of the Quebec ... Kébecquistan

Morrisette Paul: You lied, it is in the Quebec Parliament where the first Jew in Canada was admittedIt is in the University of Montreal where  the Jews refused in McGill, turned to. It was the English Prime Minister of Canada who claimed that Hitler was a great statesman, a man he admired. It was the Canadian government that refused a ship of Jewish refugees who were returned to be taken by the Germans and whose occupants perished in concentration camps
Alain Mourani: Well, I can also cite the example of Adrien Arcand, a pure Nazi... the question isn't there. The Jewish hospital exists because cathos refused Jewish doctors the right to practice in the cathos hospitals. Giving me some historical facts does not change the present situation. I have a collection of anti-Semitic posters from 1945 to 1955, in French, posters used by municipalities like St. Agathe, to complain about the invasion of the Jews, their refusal to integrate ... etc.. Just look at the current deleterious climate to understand that the latent xenophobia speaks now without restraint. Before we had a little discomfort in expressing it. ... Link{fr}
Read: An open letter to Tania Longpre from a surgeon in the Jewish General Hospital

Here's my solution to the impasse.....

Let the government take over the JGH and install a new secular administration, rename the hospital more appropriately, perhaps Hopital Abbé Lionel Groulx .
Get rid of all the Prots, Anglos, Jews, Muslims and pesky immigrants who work in the hospital and replace them with unilingual Francophones. Rename all the pavilions and buildings which up to now,  honour generous patrons and donors, with famous Montreal Canadiens hockey players.

....then pay back the almost 1 billion dollars that the Jewish community invested in the hospital via charitable donations over the decades.

That sounds fair, and readers I'm betting that there are many PQ politicians who would take the deal.

After all, it would be a question of raising Quebec's debt from $250 billion to $251 billion, a trifle and worth the money to get rid of the reminder of Anglo domination and the fact that as McGill University is Quebec's best institution of higher learning, so too is the JGH, in relation to the health field.
Just ask Jacques Parizeau and Pauline Marois, who chose to be treated at the JGH, rather than at any of the aforementioned hospitals on the list I've provided above.

PQ Election promises out the window

The two main planks of the PQ election campaign were the cancellation of the Health Tax, imposed on all citizens by Jean Charest's Liberal government and the promise of a balanced budget.
The PQ government admitted this week that it can deliver on neither due to deteriorating economic conditions and reduced revenues.

It is no surprise to readers of this blog, I told you this would happen a while back.
"No matter how you slice it, Quebec is in big economic trouble, likely heading into a recession and towards a three or four billion budgetary deficit.
Long gone is the PQ election promise of a balanced budget, the realities of Quebec economics dictate that in the present and foreseeable future, it just ain't gonna happen.
Read: Quebec's perfect storm

Well it may even be worse than that;
When Quebec's finance minister presented his forecast for this fiscal year, he made some predictions in regard to revenue and expenditures, predictions which would allow him to balance the budget.
Well, how'd that work out?... not so well.
Marceau's numbers:

Government revenue to increase +5.2%... So far. +0.6%...an increase 88% less than predicted.
Government expenses to increase +1.9%... So far. +4%...an increase 102%  more than predicted.

Revenues from government enterprises including Hydro-Québec, Loto-Québec, the SAQ, etc., have posted diminishing returns on the order of -4,4% while the government anticipated a rise of 3.8%.

And so the government, just four months into the fiscal year  has built up a $2.3 billion deficit.
The way things are going, my prediction of a 3-4 billion dollar debt this year is looking realistic.

By the way, the last five months have been brutal, each posting a deficit and totalling 3 billion dollars in all, erasing some of the gains made at the beginning of the year.

But all this is no matter to Marois, who now maintains that a deficit isn't as bad as cutting expenses.

Marois steals Bank slogan..."Quebec is richer than you think!"

I cannot stop but marvel at the utter and complete bullshit that comes out of our Premier's mouth. Sorry to be crude, but never in my life have I seen a politician so brazenly attempt to lie, misconstrue and totally mislead.
Readers know me as a cynical sort, one who claims to have seen it all in regards to politicians. But Pauline takes the cake for evil manipulation and manifest dishonesty.
Watching a children's movie with my 4 year-old grandson, I'm inspired to nickname Pauline Marois as "Despicable She"
She has evolved to the point that almost nothing coming out of her mouth  can be trusted.
The definition of an inveterate liar is someone who lies, even when it makes more sense to tell the truth.
"Pauline Marois made the case for Quebec sovereignty on Sunday, arguing that Quebecers are richer now that they were in 1995, when they came close to choosing independence.
“Never has Quebec counted so few families without jobs or living on social assistance,” the premier said at the close of a two-day meeting in Montreal of about 500 Parti Québécois delegates and observers from across the province." Link
Is Marois intimating that Quebec's unemployment rate is at a historical low?....Nope, not at all.
Are we really richer because a couple of thousand less people are on welfare?

Marois maybe useless as a Premier, but she certainly could get a get a job selling real estate à la Glengarry Glencross.

Soon she'll be resorting to double negatives to fools us. ..."I want to assure you that no one in my government is not considering tax increases."

Quebec has accrued an additional $100 billion debt since 1995, so the question remains...are we really richer than then?

OQLF..en garde

After being badly embarrassed for over-zealousness a la Pastagate, the OQLF  is being decidedly more cautious.
After a complaint by a language vigilante in regards to a restaurant's signage which included  the word 'take out', the agency declined to proceed, based on the notion that the offence was trifling.

Have a great weekend !pub

    1. Umm, maybe it's "richer" because we didn't follow that pied piper Parizeau down the garden path back in '95 and stayed in Canada. With the economy doing poorly and all this divisive and pointless PQ Values bullshit, it is really amazing that the PQ still leads in voting intention among Francophone voters. How bad does it have to get before these sheeple change their minds? Polls keep showing that the economy and healthcare are the two main issues voters care about but the PQ still leads the Libs even though they have done nothing to grow the economy or improve healthcare. Is tribalism the main motivating factor for Francophone voters?

We know it's not richer, we are speaking facetiously. Cutie, things are going to get better. When the Libs are elected the PQ is gone. This alone wil raise our spirits. After that things will happen quickly. Tensions will ease without the hate leaders.
The economy will soar due to the investors returning with new confidence. Plan Nord is still a viable option. Resources will be quickly mined and sold. Good humour will return and taxers will be cut in half. (Alright not the last one)
I know these things will happen. I took a political science course at McGill one time and we discussed this very thing, the restoration of a country. The teacher a man named Krohn was also retired and had taught at McGill for 45 yerars. His knowledge of the world scene was incredible. Many countries have been depleted by war and floods and the economy

    2. Actually, Ed, your suggestion is more interesting than you think. My MPP is Charles Sousa, the current Minister of Finance. All publications in Ontario are produced in French as well as English.

Actually, Quebec would not be entitled to the entire territory it now has, so as a concession, we could cut a swathe between the Ontario border and New Brunswick. The concession, BTW, would be one of many conditions Quebec would have to agree to if they have any hope in hell of Canada (sans Québec) allowing Quebec to join NAFTA or any other free trade agreement. I see the Americas forming a trade bloc somewhere in the future, so if Quebec wants to take part, they better ante up.

If Quebec wants a war over it, make sure they have neither conscription protection nor a (corrupt) union forming committees and sub-committees to handle every major grievance like not enough cheese curds on the poutine, rotten living conditions and a war that starts at 9am and stops at 5pm, two-hour lunches, 30-minutes breaks three times a day, off weekends, and stat holidays including Hallowe'en, All Saints Day (like in the past), Ground Hog Day and René Lévesque's birthday.

Adski, there is a good reason for circumcision you won't find in the medical books. If you.ve ever slept in a tent or camp cabin beside a boy who has a load of smegmayou would not be so qujick to dismiss circumcision.
many boys think it.s great to be uncircumcized because after you urijnate one can use the foreskin to clean off the drops which is exactly what should not be done. During the years I was Hygeine counselor at Boy's farm I made sure that boys knew the ropes. I told them to pull back the foreskin and wash well inside when they shower. Unfortunately with the amount of absentee fathers today boys don't get the instruction they need for such things. In some cases
phimoses makes it impossible to pull back the foreskin. Smegma is very infectious..
The American Association of Pediatricians and the American Urologists Society recommend it. This Dr. Wiles who is head of ETHICS should check with the people who actually work in penology. When someone asks me if they should have their baby circumcized I always ask if they are sure someone will be around to instruct him when he needs it. A simple circumcision can save lives. They have discovered In the African AIDS clinics that circumcized men are 60% less likely to attract AIDS germs. Ed

He said, "Sir I;ve been washing them for days, the smell keeps coming back. In the end his Mother who had been telling him for dauys to wash his hands took him to a doctor. repaired his phimosis and circumcized him at age twelve. Besides is it not true that there is much more chance for a woman to end up with cervical cancer following sex with a man that is not circumcised than if he is? I remember reading that but that could be before they discovered the virus that is the main cause of cervexal cancer.

The separatists don't want to abandon their religion. A lot have abandoned the Church but wiill not give up their Faith . The faith of Our Fathers goes back a long time and is deeply rooted in family and thought. Thankfully the Christian love the Church expounds is ingrained in our hearts. The sins of some modern day priests will pass on but the Faith that built our Country and held it together for decades is thankfully still strong..Even people who don't attend any more still call the Priest when they want a loved one buried or married.
In all the funerals I have done, I've alway found something to use as a eulogy. A few questions before the service always gave me something to praise. Some real bullies and drunks that I've buried went to the grave with a proper burial and a kind word.Oftebn about how they loved their children or their dog. Ed

      Delete
    3. Ed, it's exactly the same thing in Judaism and probably other religions re hiring a rabbi, imam, guru or other religious official to deliver a eulogy. More often than not, the religious official doesn't know the person they're eulogizing from the hole in the ground they're being interred. They consult the family and good eulogizers listen carefully and capture the essence of this person they didn't know; others fill in the blanks and that's that.

In the case of my father, by very bright big brother was a bit stymied finding positives. I gave the rabbi who didn't know my father at all (our prior rabbi knew my family much better, but he retired a year before my father died) the positive that he was devoted to his parents. He was a much more dutiful son than he was a father, and how he gave six years to his country during WWII albeit all his duties being served at a Canadian base. He never saw combat, but he did enlist as opposed to awaiting a draft notice and it interrupted six full years of his life.

Whether anybody at the funeral (far fewer people did as opposed to my late mother's and filled every pew in the chapel where the funeral was held), maybe picked up on the fact he was not eulogized as a good father, I'll never know, but really don't care either. The eulogy focused on the positives, and was honest, and we paid for a rabbi to preside over the brief service.

Mr. Sauga, In the Christian Faith, funerals are the one rite that doesn't require a Priest. Funerals are often difficult for a family because so many die leaving the expense to someone else who can't really afford it. Some of the attenders are devastated while others are thinking, "So many people, I didn't know he had any friends." while someone else is thinking, "Wonder if I can take up a collection to help pay for this?" Rather than a Priest, lots of people prefer a frriend of the family who having known the diseased can properly eulogize them.I never expect payment for being of service at a time of despair. It's a pleasure to be able to ease the pain. I have never broke down doing a eulogy but I've had to fight back tears often. A killer is having children ask things like, "Will you bring my Daddy back some day.?" Ed

    6. Ed: You certainly know the Christian burial rites more than I know the Jewish. All I know is we do the rituals in reverse from Christianity insofar as we hold the funeral first and then for the seven days after the funeral and burial do our visitation known as sitting shiva. "Shiva" is actually the number seven in English representing the intense mourning period following the burial of the departed. In Judaism, burial takes place as soon as possible after the death, in part because the deceased is not enbalmed (unless the family insists, but I've never heard of this) and normally the casket is closed for that reason (although I have heard of viewings or open casket services but that's very, very rare); too, Jews are not supposed to cremated but occasionally they are at the deceased's request prior to death. The burial ritual comes from Genesis where G-d commanded that man was made from the dust and upon death returns to dust. Too, burial is supposed to take place in simple, inexpensive containers (and in Israel, most bodies are wrapped something like mummies and delivered to the grave on a litter, others in inexpensive porous coffins where decomposition of the body is left to natural cirucmstances).

I don't believe a rabbi is absolutely required for a Jewish funeral, but in all the funerals I've attended, a rabbi has always delivered the eulogy.

I imagine being asked some questions, especially by young children, is about the most difficult task to be faced by any human being. I like to think that karma has and will continue to reward you for having taken on the task of delivering eulogies.

  10. Great posts as always.
I'd like one day a post about Quebec's
    deteriorating demographics.
Today the median age in Quebec is about 46.
    In 1971 it was 26.
In Quebec one in three people are baby boomers born between
1946 and 1961 or 1964 depending on what you read.
That means in thirty years its youngest cohorts will be 79 years old.
Today in Canada 1000 people turn 65 EVERY DAY.
In Quebec it is about 270-300 Every DAY.
    How sustainable is this??

What will happen in the outer regions of Quebec if they don't grow?
For instance in Huntington there are two deaths for every birth.

Frankly why the obscession in Quebec with a balanced budget?
Only one state (North Dakota) and one province (Alberta, more or less)
    balance their books every year.
Oh, is it because if we issue debt we have to grow our economy to pay these
debts, and with our falling birthrate that means we have to bring in those immigrants
who vote the "wrong way" in elections and referendums?

Write about how we live in a world of debt and infinite growth
and if you don;t change the way money works you change nothing.
    Everything else is window dressing.

As for the Charter sideshow let them pass it.
The Arab/Muslim community was one of the few ethnic communities in Montreal to give
    PQ/independantistes a favorable hearing.
    That is long gone.
Let them have their "Eaton's Moment" when in 50 years
from now non francophones who will be about 50% of the population will bring up the Charter much like
francophones bring up the lack of French at Eatons 50 years ago.

Give them enough rope and they will hang themselves.

Mike, It's not paying the debt that's a problem. Paul Martin showed that it can be done. The drop of one hunfred billion saved us 18 billion per year. Across Canada we are throwing away one hundred billion every year by not paying our debt. Debts which are created by budgets not balanced. John Turner one of the best finance ministers we ever had said that there is no reason a country should have a deficit except in times of war. If Turner had been elected instead of Mulroney we would have no debt today. We would be waalthy with minimum taxes for everyone. There would be no need for the GST. Ed

    Replies
    1. PART ONE

Ed: What you wrote re "What if Turner..." is far, far too simplistic. Every politician back in the 1960s looked good because that was probably the goldenest age for the North American economy, although even then inflation was starting to become a problem that plagued us by the early 1980s, and Canada suffered a depression in 1981-82 with a prime interest rate of over 22%. Our GDP dropped 5% that year and the OFFICIAL unemployment rate was around 14%. Unofficially it was much higher because many E.I. beneficiaries exhausted their benefits before they could find work, and welfare recipients didn't count in the stats, even though the provinces saw the number of welfare recipients ABLE TO WORK skyrocket.

While John Turner was an astute finance minister while Alan MacEachen was as shitty as they come, the deficit under MacEachen rose from $3 billion in the late 70s to over $30 billion by 1983. In the February 15, 1984 budget delivered by then finance minister Marc Lalonde, he called his projected $29.5 billion deficit for that year "fiscally responsible. That year the deficit came in at over $33 billion.

Still, Ed, all these guys were under your precious Trudeau's Liberal government, so had Turner been the finance minister in the early 1980s, I don't think he would have done one iota better. Martin, as Chrétien's finance minister, did a very good job of eliminating the deficit on the backs of the provinces, so all that meant was instead of the fed being under great pressure to pick our pockets, that burden was passed over to the provinces. In Ontario, when Mike Harris and his neo-Conservatives were in office, they found ways to inflict the burden more heavily on the municipalities so again the same pocket ends up being picked to pay one level of tax or another. No matter how many levels of taxes are created by governments, the number of taxpayers doesn't change, just to whom the taxes must be paid.

Ed, you say you are 77 years old thus you were born circa 1936. The mid-to-late 30s were the BEST TIME IN RECENT HISTORY to be born. You were too young to remember the worst of the depression and too young to worry about being drafted for war. As mentioned above, the Golden Age of the economy for the 20th Century and so far beyond was the 1950s and 60s. With a university degree, the sky was the limit and every university graduate found work--100% employment! Even a high school diploma was gold in those days because most people didn't have one, especially women. Jobs were plentiful, unemployment around 2%, taxes were low, one family income usually sufficed, annual or bi-annual promotions were almost automatic unless you were a real jarhead, an annual family vacation was practically a god-given right and buying a new car every five years or so was common. Interest rates weren't quite as low as they are now, but they were guaranteed for the life of the mortgage, no mid-term renewals at who know what rate. Ahhhhhh...those Leave-it-to-Beaver and Andy-of-Mayberry days.

      Delete
    2. PART TWO

Today, many kids who graduate university can't find jobs, a high school diploma isn't worth a damn, and dropping out without high school completed is a one-way ticket to a life of minimum wage part-time and temporary jobs, no benefits, no pension, with intermittent trips to the welfare office. My son is 18, and while he is pretty proactive in taking on leadership roles, community work and working hard in school, I still see him as Generation Screwed because now there are too many university graduates with not enough jobs to absorb them all, extremely high debt, companies paying reduced benefits, often part-time 30-hour-per-week jobs instead of 35-40 hours where benefits don't have to or are simply not being offered.

No, Ed, you have again shown you have very false idols and believe in very flawed doctrines. Turner may have done marginally better as Daddy Trudeau's finance minister and Philippe Couillard won't anymore help the minorites anymore than John James "Goldilocks" Charest did.

Mike F. AND Ed: Yes indeed, deficits are a problem, but there was no political will for any government to exercise Keynesian theory economics of surpluses in good times and deficits in bad. You had Reaganomics that benefitted the rich most and the poor least in the early 1980s. Yes, one year the American economy circa 1984 was a robust 6.8%, but who got richer? Too, that caused inflationery pressures, so who suffered the most for that? Since Reagan became president, North American wages have not kept up with the cost of living and this has continued uninterrupted since those days.

      Delete
    3. CONCLUSION

My disposable income has not kept up with the cost of living and I constantly feel the screws tightening. My parents were able to live debt-free except for the mortgage on their house, but at least inflation somewhat ate away at that debt. My father's wages then didn't, and my mother, who worked part-time from the mid-60s to about the mid-70s had to take on more hours to make ends meet. Many former housewives had to go out to earn a paycheque to maintain their families' standard of living. They managed to live debt-free once they paid off their mortgage. My line of credit is getting a bigger balance with each passing year, and I barely eat at restaurants, go to a movie once every year or two and drive a 21-year-old car that I bought back in May. My prior car was bought when it was ten years old. My mechanic fixes old klunkers well and they last 2-4 years more, then get scrapped and the cycle starts over. My last new car purchase was a 1987 Chevy Nova I bought in mid-1988, i.e., one year out of the model year because there was a little-known 20% rebate on the car. It was an excellent Japanese Toyota with Chevy i.d. on the outside. Phil Edmonston, who wrote the book Lemon Aid described it as the best car GM never made. It was a joint venture with Toyota. Of course, in the end, Edmonston was caught for taking major kickbacks from the Japanese car makers because he was biased in his evaluation of Japanese vs North American cars.

But I digress. With an aging population, we're going to go through what the Japanese went through 15-20 years ago as the tax base won't be there to tax the income of the old unless they decide to leave the poorer aged with less than what they have now. The rich can afford their snowbirding ways or pay what the government won't.

Interest payments eat up government revenues, but what the government can do that my increasing line of credit balances can't is print money. Governments can do this, I can't. Too, part of the reason it's not worth the effort to try and reduce deficits so much is because our economy is globally connected so even if we're more fiscally responsible than the Americans, so what? If they default on their debt, and it looks as if they're heading that way sooner or later, we're going to drown along with them, and so will Western Europe and likely China. Trouble is, 75% of our trade is with the Americans. If they sneeze, we get a cold; if they get a cold, we get pneumonia. We can't win!

Mostly, they hate to look bad and want to jealously guard their so-called reputation, (Yes, I know…what Reputation????). lol, Thus, they try to distort, distract and sway the conversation every chance they get, and the a-hole opportunists will borrow ANYONE’s wall gratuitously to bounce their ball off of, whether one responds or not. Editor has made it very clear he will not intervene and censor the comments section, he has indicated that the section belongs to the contributors, except that there are Legitimate contributors, who come to enhance the conversation and want to have an honest exchange of ideas, and then you have the trolls who insist on sabotaging the blog with garbage comments because they believe that stating Truth hurts them.

I propose that rather than idly allowing them to clutter the blog with their BS, (make no mistake, they will continue to post regardless), I say we recycle the garbage and sabotage them right back, ..like making them pay a “posting tax” for littering, ….savvy??

Now, you can either follow my Lead, or stay out of my way, cause I don’t want to ever have this conversation…again.

They want to take Jewish out of the name!! They actually have the gall to and ask “Why should we finance a hospital called Jewish General Hospital with our income tax?” An amazing hospital that is open to all people, REGARDLESS of what your name is, what you`re wearing and what language you speak? I would say UP YOURS too, you gang of racist bigots!
Not that I know soooo much about it but I can comment on what I have witnessed recently while accompanying a family member on several hospital visits. First, the many patient rooms and even some buildings inscribed with the names of very generous Jewish families who have donated tons of money to make this the best hospital around. Second, as I was leaving, I had to make an appointment with the doctor`s secretary at the front desk of that particular department. I asked her a question and she laughed and answered, Oh, I only volunteer one day a week so I won`t be here tomorrow. WOW, how many other people of their community are generous their time like that? Third, the volunteers going around selling raffle tickets to raise money for new equipment? Fourth, the charity committee that puts on their yearly bazaar which sells all the items DONATED to them from the many Jewish families (and others I presume) who own businesses. And on, and on, and on! This is one community that is dedicated to making this hospital the best place around and they of their own….and others too! They are generous and they help themselves.
Now, let`s just think about the Hôpital Maisonneuve-Rosemont or Hôpital Le Gardeur, for a second. How many people in these communities generously offer their time one day a week? How many donations do they get to sponsor hospital rooms and build new pavilions? Will they serve you in the language of your choice “without a language test”? I don`t have the definitive answer to these questions so I`ll let you draw your own conclusions.

I observed a kindly old Jewish volunteer who sat with a Greek lady who was all alone while her husband was in surgery. , He sat with her for hours getting up up occasionally to minister to others and to make call into the O/R recovery room to provide updates.
That type of volunteerism is what makes the JGH stand out.,

This topic has been discussed before, but I want to discuss it again.

I have no experience with the healthcare domain. However, I worked at McGill University before. At McGill and at Concordia, we can see many buildings, facilities or organizations named after donors. Donors who have donated plenty to the universities. The most obvious examples are John Molson School of Business and Desautels Faculty of Management.

The same thing can not be said to UdeM and UQAM and their affiliates. So I have to say, despite their loud noise, francophone community does less than anglophone community to advance their own welfare.

It`s just plain disgusting for jealous people to be so vindictive and vengeful when they should be proud to have these institutions at their disposal. Instead they choose to complain about their tax dollars supporting these superior institutions and rub their hands together and lick their lips in a sick type of anticipation of putting them in their place...."on va mettre nos culottes là". Who exactly is "on"? Does that mean the the majority franco Québecois need to put the minorities in their place and show who`s boss. Tyranny of the majority anyone!

Laurie, you speak highly of volunteers and with good reason. In the English community volunteers can be found at practically every Church/Synagogue/Mosque, social club or retirement home. These people help to provide things the government doesn't.
Special mention goes to Food Banks like 'Share The Warmth in Pointe St.Charles or St.Willibrord's Church in Verdun. St.Willy's people operate a Lunch three tmes per week. They host a flea market on the first Saturday of each month where small entrepeneurs can rent a table to make a few helpful dollars. They give large amounts of food, some donated and most bought through a special arrangement with local super market and donations to the poor box. When I worked there I often saw one hundred dollar bills in the five poor boxes after a Mass. The Christmas basket project gives food and toys by the hundreds. Supporrt groups for single parents, natal classes, and teen gatherings are all free and operated by volunteers.
Laurie what makes a volunteer special and sets them aside from the average employee is their compassion. It's caring for other that drives them to help
As people's Warden at a Church here in Verdun which is now closed tanks to Hydro, I often had to call on our volunteers when there was a fire or other need.I kept a list of empty flats and rooms full of used furniture. When someone was burned out I would call the flat owner and guarantee the first months rent. Usually they would give it free. My volunteers would arrive and bring beds, kitchen tables and chairs plus kitchen items as well as fridge and stove. In the middle of the they would come and have a family set up in a new home before morning.
Volunteers are the true messangers of God. Jesus said to gain entrance to heaven there are only two great commandments. the first is "love the God that created you and the seoind is equally important 'love thy neighbour'. Every day these people are winning a place in eterenity. I'm sure they feel the joy of giving. It is a wonderful feeling to know someone is better off because of your good work.
Sorry if I got carried away , my love for people does it. A free way to feel good is tp go where children and adults are playing and share their happiness. A smile on someone's face is better than anything any artist could paint, except perhaps the Mona Lisa because she is smiling. Ed

As people's Warden at a Church here in Verdun which is now closed thanks to Hydro, I often had to call on our volunteers when there was a fire or other need.I kept a list of empty flats and rooms full of used furniture. When someone was burned out I would call the flat owner and guarantee the first months rent. Usually they would give it free. My volunteers would arrive and bring beds, kitchen tables and chairs plus kitchen items as well as fridge and stove. In the middle of the night they would come and have a family set up in a new home before morning.
Ed

I doubt this will every happen for a number of reasons. Most of them fundamentally economic in nature.

Quebec economy is in the tank and continues to erode. Debt level very high at about 250 Billion.

Quebec is heavily dependent on Ottawa transfer payments to maintain social programs. (Transfers are about 15% of the total Revenue of Quebec Government.

Simply put, Quebec cannot afford to any longer entertain the concept of their own country. Desole S.R. you are stuck with the anglos for a long and indefinite time.

Unfortunate for the separatists, the people in the ROC now widely know that the threat of separation is simply a ruse with about as much bite as a "dog barking with rubber teeth".

Pratte fully admits that Quebec receives more transfers than it should but makes the case that the bridge must be replaced in spite of this fact. Whom do they turn to: Ottawa and the ROC of course. Then the article is posted on Vigile.net with heading "we pay for this". Well, in fact it is proven and documented that Quebec pays for nothing as they get all their taxes back plus an additional 8 to 10 Billion dollars per year.

      Here is an excerpt:

After a 1995 Quebec referendum on sovereignty for the province of Quebec, Galganov founded the Quebec Political Action Committee (QPAC), serving as its president (and only member) until 2000. One of Galganov’s first prominent QPAC activities was to organize a protest at Fairview Pointe-Claire, a shopping mall, in 1996 in the predominantly anglophone West Island of Montreal to protest that retail stores were not placing the maximum amount of English on their commercial signs as allowed under the Charter of the French Language. Estimated attendance at the protest varied from 500 to 5,000.

This is what they seem to be afraid of - sharia law being imposed on them by the 1000 or so Muslims that live here. God, what a stupid overreaction to a nothing problem. 25.

Merci Editor d'avoir transmis l'information.

    2. True story as to how all this political BS is changing the average francophone's attitude even here in Gatineau.

I was at the CLSC the other day and while waiting my turn I was having a pleasant conversation with the lady next to me and another lady, someone she obviously knew came in, and they started talking in English as well as I speak English. The next thing I heard the newcomer say was she was here to get some papers because she is on medical leave from the public service after only 22 years and can't stand working there any longer. The first reason out of her mouth was all the meetings were "held in English" and then she went on to run down all the new staff as they are young and not willing to listen to her when she suggests how to do thing. So she now wants out on medical leave at full pay until she is of an age to retire. I'm willing to bet that 10 years ago she would have said what's really bothering her is she does not feel needed or wanted anymore in her job but she brings up the French/English without a second thought as to how she sounds. This is the feeling of being "better than anglos" that the stupid separatists honestly believe is their reason to now be lazy, get on the government dole and tell the uppity anglos to stuff it while pocketing their money. What a culture to be proud of.
