PQ Report Card a Sad Indictment of Dismal Failure...Part one

The PQ Ship of Fools
With the election of a new Liberal party leader Philippe Couillard  and an uptick in the polls, it's not unreasonable to look forward to the demise of this PQ government, if not in the short term, perhaps in the medium term.

New leaders of any political party enjoy a brief honeymoon that only the smartest take advantage of.

If the Liberals are adept, they'd quickly work to dump the PQ government  and plunge the province into a quicky type election, but it's unlikely as the CAQ fearing a Liberal majority will be compelled to support the moribund PQ government.

Since nobody can really predict what will happen, we may or may not be stuck with a PQ government that can best be described as not quite up to snuff.

When the PQ was first elected I wrote a piece describing the utter lack of potential cabinet talent within the PQ ranks and the unmitigated disaster that awaited us as a bunch of incompetent fools were handed the reins of power.  Read: Pauline Steers a PQ Ship of Fools
I think it's fair to say that time has borne me out and that this opinion wasn't just a partisan shot.

While I generally disdain all pequists, past and present, I  am the first to say that many PQ governments of the past were made up of men and women with a certain level of competence, responsibility and yes, honour, all of which is sadly lacking in Pauline's motley crew.

Let me provide a report card on the ministers of this government, cognizant of the fact that I am not  a fan, something like a Montreal Canadiens fan rating the Boston Bruins, player by player.

Nicolas Marceau- C
Minister of Finance.
Of all the PQ ministers, Nicolas Marceau came with perhaps the highest credentials with a solid academic background. However it turns out that being book-smart is no replacement for experience, something he apparently sorely lacks.
His first move as finance minister was utterly disastrous, not only raising taxes, but doing it retroactively.

What is wrong with retro-activity?
Well, it is like Loblaws raising the price of the groceries you bought last year and sending you an additional bill now.  Not many people would be fine with that.

The outcry in the press was more than he and the government could stand as he sheepishly reversed his position, a harbinger of a string of about-faces that would plague the Marois government in the future months.
Marceau's gaffe didn't just surprise me because he should have known better, what really amazed  me was that his deputy-minister and professional staff didn't  steer him away from the disaster, after all, they are professionals and could not have been blind to the impending disaster.
Either Marceau over-rode their advice or they let him commit hari-kiri in public, neither scenario, very encouraging.
Marceau has never recovered and has kept his head down, his reputation in tatters, something that no minister of finance can afford.

Martine Ouellet- F
Minister of Natural Resources.
There's no polite way of saying it, the Minister of Natural Resources, Martine Ouellet is an idiot, a dangerous fool who doesn't even understand the difference between money spent and money saved.

In complaining about Ottawa's loan guarantee to Newfoundland's potential underwater electricity transmission line, she told Quebec taxpayers a bold-faced lie in intimating that it is costing Canadian taxpayers $900 million dollars, when in fact it is costing next to nothing.
I've told you this before, it is akin to counter-signing a car loan at the bank for your brother, because his credit is not as good as yours. Because of your guarantee, the bank will charge a lower interest rate, saving a couple of thousand dollars in interest.
If the loan is repaid, the guarantor is not out of pocket a dime, a concept the minister has trouble understanding.
In this interview, Martine Ouellet is explained as such by an incredulous Radio-Canada interviewer, who is hard-placed to mask her disdain for the sad-sack minister.
There's no doubt in my mind that the young interviewer would make a better Minister than Ouellet!

Watch the video and laugh or cry. Ouellet is truly an idiot par excellence.

But that's not all, Ouellet who has previously voiced her opinion that shale gas can never be safely exploited, has sent the file for study to the BAPE, an environmental agency for study, without understanding that any conclusions that agency draws further down the road are actually moot.
Because of the vast amount of shale gas already brought to market in North America, the price has collapsed, making new development uneconomic.
And so it doesn't really matter what conclusions are reached, NOBODY IS INTERESTED IN DRILLING anymore and as we say in English, That ship has sailed.
If the politically-challenged minister doesn't understand that metaphor, here's another.
"YOU'VE MISSED THE BOAT!"
Sending the shale gas file for environmental assessment now is like asking the agency to study the efficacy and safety of the production of typewriters.

Then there is the fiasco of the new plan to raise mining royalties, a cornerstone of Ouellet's election campaign, where she promised to up royalties by $350 million. Ouellet reminds me of the little girl selling lemonade in front of her house for $100 a glass, believing that she only need sell one to be successful.
The Marois government backed off that commitment as if it were radioactive, citing changing circumstances, infuriating the Minister to the point that she almost resigned.
Nah.....just kidding, a ministerial limousine is nothing to trifle with!

Clearly in over her head, Ouellet is plainly an embarrassment to herself, the government and all Quebecers.

Agnes Maltais- D
Minister of Unemployment and Welfare  Minister of Labour, Employment and Social solidarity.
Madame Maltais reminds me of one of those stereotypical characters in the movies of old, a stern matron, running an orphanage with an iron fist.... grim, bossy, regimented and eternally angry.

She ran into a monster problem right off the bat as the Conservative government imposed changes to the Employment Insurance program designed to penalize frequent benefits claimants, a large proportion found in Quebec's boonies.
Her position in demanding Ottawa reconsider the program and the disastrous consequences (Quebec would be liable for welfare payments wherein claimants lost their Employment benefits) and her tantrum in the press where she demanded that Ottawa undertake economic impact studies before proceeding, fell on deaf ears. Diane Findlay, the conservative minister in charge of the program in Ottawa, gave Maltais a ten-minute meeting before politely showing her the door.
Maltais was also forced to drop the election promise made by the PQ whereby the province would seek repatriation of the Employment Insurance program to provincial jurisdiction.
It seems that Madame Maltais and the PQ failed to do their own economic impact study, because as it turns out, such a move would cost Quebec over $700 million, the difference between what Quebecers contribute and take out of the EI program.

Then Madame Maltais announced cuts to welfare payments to some claimants in order to encourage them to get back into the workforce.
There's nothing like taking the food out of the mouths of welfare bums to start an uproar. Those affected by the new measure showed a surprising level of industry in organizing a spirited defense of their entitlement, marching and occupying the constituency offices of many members of the PQ.
"...Labour Minister Agnès Maltais, is being bombarded with criticism for her decision to cut $20 million from the welfare budget.
"I think it's double-talk," said Françoise David, Québec Solidaire MNA for Gouin.
"On one hand you pretend to give support to vulnerable people and on the other hand, you allow cuts that affect those who are the poorest in our society..."
...Maltais surreptitiously cut funds this week to welfare recipients between the ages of 55 and 58 and those living with pre-school children. She also made budget cuts to a program that helps recovering addicts. Link
Opposition parties then dug up a video of Maltais arguing against exactly such a move, when she was in opposition and after an unfortunate answer in the National Assembly, she was accused in Le Devoir of making convoluted statements (alambiquée) while another commentator on the story used the word 'charabia' (gibberish) to describe her response. Video plus story {fr}
It's never good when the press and the public start to mock you.

Now the welfare cutbacks actually made sense, but when the welfare lobby rose in righteous indignation and started demonstrating across the province against the cutbacks, Maltais did an about face and reversed her decision, reflecting the PQ's lack of confidence and its propensity for improvisation.

Maka Kotto- F
Minister of Culture
An unsuccessful actor/idiot who only made it to the cabinet because of his minority status.
You'd think that in his capacity of Minister of Culture, he wouldn't be able to cause much damage, flitting from award ceremony to theater openings adding a little 'colour' to the mix. But alas the stumblebum, proved everyone wrong in his first weeks on the job, calling the cultural attachés serving around the world back to Quebec on an expensive mission, just to tell them that their budgets would be cut.
"Minister Maka Kotto was called to order by the Deputy Prime Minister, François Gendron, Wednesday. Dean of the National Assembly, Mr. Gendron reminded his colleague, Minister of Culture the importance  for the members of the cabinet, while managing public funds.
This public snub occurred in the aftermath of the broadcast of a dispatch of the Canadian press indicating Mr. Kotto had convened in Montreal  22 Québec foreign delegates in times of budget cuts and against the advice of its staff members who felt it an  unnecessary expense." Link

Daniel Breton- F
Minister of Nothing anymore
The rookie minister never had a chance and was dumped from the cabinet after revelations about his deadbeat past came out.
"According to newspaper reports Breton has a string of criminal convictions dating to 1988 for defrauding the unemployment insurance system, and as recently as 2007 was fined $400 by Revenue Quebec. La Presse also reported that Breton was convicted in 1997 for driving without a license.
Meanwhile TVA reported that Breton was evicted from his apartments in 2005 and 2009 for non-payment of rent. Photographs from his landlord show hundreds of empty bottles of wine left in the apartment Breton was forced to leave." Link
But before he left the radical environmentalist raised the ire of opposition parties when it was revealed that he exceeded his authority;
"In Quebec City, a special committee is hearing from commissioners who claim to have been bullied by former Environment Minister Daniel Breton. The commissioners work at the BAPE, Quebec's independent environmental review board.

Pierre Fortin testified Breton paid commissioners a highly unusual visit last October, during which he asked for their cell phone numbers and threatened he would be watching their decisions. Fortin says the visit left him feeling very uncomfortable.

"He said if he was unhappy with the BAPE's work, he would let us know about it," explains Fortin. "It made everyone feel nervous and uncomfortable."

Nicole Léger- D
Minister of Family
A staunch defender of the public daycare system she cut millions from the private network while telling the operators that they should be happy because it could have been much worse.
After a demonstration in Quebec to protest the cuts the minister invited the leaders to a meeting where she promised that she would listen to their grievances even if she wasn't going to change her mind.

The Minister had previously told reporters that daycares would henceforth be subject to language requirements of Bill 101, then recanted after a firestorm of protest..

She's another big fat bust....er sorry!

Jean-François Lisée- B
Minister of lots of things but most importantly Anglophone relations
Of the entire Marois cabinet, there are only two ministers whom I give a passing grade and Jean-François Lisée rates the highest.
Mr Lisée presents in the finest tradition of Quebec sovereigntists and PQ ministers who genuinely have affection and respect for the English community.

In a cabinet rife with rabid anglophobes, Lisée is perhaps the one moderating influence and is in fact the only one who has reached out to the community with a level of honest respect.

Mr. Lisée is actually a better politician than journalist or educator, his wacky ideas about the economy and francophone/anglophone relations, a witch's brew of cherry-picked facts and illogical conclusions, non sequiturs that convince only the committed.

But as a minister, he is a credit to the position.  He has a confident smile and a respectful tone, a quick wit and a positive attitude, something sorely lacking in Pauline's grim coterie of dismal hacks.
He is the one and the very few who actually carries himself in a ministerial manner.

Readers may not like his separatist politics, but when rating an opponent, one cannot take away points for success.  One of the very few in the Marois cabinet who is as they say in French 'parlable,' the PQ cabinet would be well served to take his example.
That being said, manners and polish aside, what has he really accomplished?

Next week I'll review other members of the cabinet and take a shot a Pauline Marois herself...

 Just in passing.....
To Toronto Maple Leaf fans, I can only say how badly I feel over the worst playoff collapse I have ever seen in my lifetime.

At least you'll have something to tell your grandchildren.
Like those of us old enough to remember the assassination of John Kennedy or the news of the destruction of the Challenger space shuttle, you'll always remember where and under what circumstances you witnessed the infamous Toronto Maple Fail.

At any rate, I've put up a Senators logo and as the last Canadian team left standing, let's all wish them good luck!

  1. And to think that this bunch squeaked in by a mere 30,000 votes (0.7%)... PQ 1,393,703 and Liberals 1,360,968.

Fortunately, this week ThreeHundredEight.com projects Liberals at 35.1%, PQ at 27.0% and CAQ at 19.6% (by amalgamating the latest polls). (link)

I guess the Equality Party is part of the Other category at 1.7%... still not sure what to make of them.

  2. Regarding Lisée, here’s an image the Editor and others might like to save regarding the so-called Minister for Anglophone Relations, responsible for building bridges between the communities:

"Jean-François Lisée- B; Minister of lots of things but most importantly Anglophone relations

Editor, you gave FOUR passing grades: Lisée's B, a C, 2 Ds and 3 Fs. I think you were overly generous with the D's, and Lisée has the tongue of a snake oil salesman.

"It seems that Madame Maltais and the PQ failed to do their own economic impact study, because as it turns out, such a move would cost Quebec over $700 million, the difference between what Quebecers contribute and take out of the EI program." It just absolutely kills me to no end why Diane Findlay didn't give this numbnuts what she wanted, and save $700 million for the rest of us. I'd be more than delighted, in fact downright thrilled to pieces to dump $700 million of debt in Quebec's lap. Would have made Ms. Findlay a hero saving the federal taxpayer $700 million per year for all eternity. Boy, talk about missing the boat. Diane Findlay fell into the moat over THAT one!

As mentioned in the article, the rest are just a cast of royal stumblebums! Either way, I'm not expecting any miracles from Philippe Couillard.

Revoke Quebec equalization payments altogether. Giving these chimpanzees money is like giving a little kid a book of matches to play with!

The Habs are still my team notwithstanding everything else about Quebec, but I don't think they'll win another cup as long as you have this b.s. about the coach having to be a Francophone; too, the moronic media deters many players, French speaking or not, from coming to Montreal...oh...and then there are the taxes...Remember Guy Carbonneau when he came back as coach? He wanted his kids to get around having to go to French schools. Govvie said no dice!

    2. Mississauga Guy,

I have my doubt that for NHL players / coaches the restrictions to put their children in subsidized English-language school are such big hurdles. There are a number of private schools with English instructions that take no subsidy, and the teaching quality is excellent too. Anybody can send their children there as long as they pay all the fees and tuition. One example off the top of my head is Kuper Academy in Kirkland. For those involved in the NHL, I think the fees and tuition are peanuts.

Now, I do not say that your story is false, but I think that many players and coaches blame the educational situation to hide the real reason why they do not want to go to Montreal.

The most astonishing thing is that even after 8 months of these buffoons in power they can still generate 28% support in the population according to the latest polls. How bad does it have to get before these people start looking at other political options? On matters regarding the economy, the PQ has done nothing to help Quebec. Take a drive along the Trans Canada on the island, nothing but A Louer signs. We've got a problem, the real money is leaving Quebec again and it's becoming increasingly harder to attract new investment here.

    1. The draw of ethnic tribalism is greater then any logical argument.

      Symbolism over pragmatism.

"Emotions" win over logic every time in Quebec.

The govt has created with it's poor quality construction and allowing 30% to be skimmed off the top a constant supply of infrastructure work for the overpaid unions.

"A Louer" only affects people with economy based jobs.

Govt workers, construction unions, nursing unions, student unions etc. These jobs are there in an up or a down economy. This represents 40% of the population of Quebec alone. The PQ really need to get on top of the people in the above group NOT voting for them!

This is why economic arguments have no foothold in Quebec. The large majority of the separatist voting population has no interaction or membership in the larger economy.

No matter what any govt do this PQ voting block is still there protected.

Sure after 50 years of bad economy maybe they can;t afford a metro line to the airport still.

Why would they want to provide better public transportation for people mostly going to interact with the outside world and it's big ideas anyway?

The real problem is thinking a metro line to the airport is needed!

    3. cebeuq - You nailed it..thats the truth..PQ supporters are the ones working for the unions, government - the ones who really have a job no matter what happens and a job guaranteed for life. Of course at some point Quebec will become Greece and then even these workers will be fired/see cutbacks. However these people think its impossible..they think Quebec is swimming in cash.

PQ supporters would rather overpya local companies and accept widespread corruption than open up the work to outisde companies from Ontario and elsewhere. Basically they would rather have rampant corruption, dishonesty and horrible work done as long as its by the locals than to have things done well, on time and cheaper from an outside force. By opening up the market it would force Quebec companies to clean up their act and actually do a good job at a fair price..but we cant have that of course. No its better to keep the locals employed at all costs.

What really amazes me is why so many companies are building condos in Montreal now??? Why would anybody invest so much money in this city at clearly a real estate top..it shows you just how dumb many of these real estate speculators are..there is going to be a hell of a deal on condos in a few years..they will be a dime a dozen and a lot of local real estate companies will go bust.

I can imagine that a "sovereign" Quebec would still be hitting Canada up for money. I'm sure they'd justify with something like "you still owe us, reparations!".

Excellent analysis cebeuq. The question remains, how long can this house of cards remain standing? Will the New York bond markets pull the lynch pin or will it be the ROC ceasing transfer payments to subsidize life in la belle province? Quebec has built up its own White Collar job universe with borrowed equity and money from outside Quebec. When the money stop and the gravy train comes to an abrupt end, what will Quebec look like? Greece, 2.0? Either way, it won't be a pretty sight and those that rely on the State to survive will be left scrambling. Their quality of life will take a major haircut.

(source JFL)

You must be joking - right ?
Here is a minister who's job it is to look after relations with the English community. Has M. Lisée done absolutely ANYTHING to make the English community feel part of Québec? NO! Has he listened to the concerns of the English community and addressed them ? NO! Has he convinced ANYONE in the English community that the Government is looking out for their best interests and recognizes the English presence and the obvious bilingual nature of Montréal which is clearly evident to everyone except all the Nationalists & politicians who only want Québec to be recognized as French? NO!

This guy has failed in all aspects of his duties. Just because he's a smooth talker, doesn't mean he has succeeded in his post. Therefore M. Lisée only deserves an F !

“There's just too much lip service with Jean-Francois Lisée and I sensed a martyr complex at play when he suggested that many people are hardwired to want him to fail. As a Quebec Anglophone who's proudly -- and committedly -- bilingual, am I supposed to simply *forget* all the xenophobic and (some would say) racist remarks that spewed from his own mouth prior to September 4th, 2012 and his subsequent appointment to the Minister Responsible for Anglophone Affairs portfolio? I'll only speak for myself but I am *not* a fuzzy animal in a petting zoo and I'm smart enough to recognize smarminess and disingenuousness when I see, read and hear it. Whatever Mr. Lisée's intentions are, they need to be matched by progressive-thinking policy and action for him to gain my trust *and* respect.”
      -----------------------------
“I am a fully bilingual Quebecer. First off I agree that the French culture is an important part of Quebec and there should be steps taken to ensure it stays that way. That being said, the PQ with Bill 14 is going way too far. Bill 101 already goes too far, especially with dealing with education. The moment you start to take the rights away from people to make decisions on their children’s education you have gone way too far. There are other parts of both bills that I don't agree with (Pastagate) but the education thing is by far the worst. Francophones in Quebec need to wake up and see these laws for what they are. It is one thing to want to preserve culture but you can't do it at the expense of what should be basic human rights.”

“When you think about it... there is no real solution. Regardless of what one does, one side will never be happy. Make Anglos/Allos equal in the eyes of the law in this province and you p---off the French hardliners (about 30% of the population). Make us second class citizens with laws, with the proposed Bill 14, and you tick us off.

Not all Anglos/Allos can afford to leave and move to Ontario (or whatever). Many, if not most, are from this province. We have as many roots as many of these "pure-laine" Quebecers. So why are we "not welcomed". If I had a nickel for every time I was told to "go back home" I'd be a wealthy person. My family has nothing to do with this language issue. We didn't participate in any ill actions against the French so many generations ago that is the root of this conflict. So why are strangers pointing the finger at me (and others). I didn't "come here" to tick-off the French! I was born here.

I know both languages, I went to French school. I have friends who speak both. What's so wrong with that? Yes I speak English to my children (for which I was publicly criticized for); I do it so they can learn the language half their family knows. Its culture, its heritage... and people criticize me for doing so. My wife speaks French to the kids, and guess what they both understand and speak both very very well.”
      -----------------------------
“Similar experience, I was having a private conversation in a public "German Oktoberfest" on top of everything else, when a man burst into our space and very loudly said, "Parlez français au Québec ou retournez chez vous!" Needless to say we were both flabbergasted.

Recently in a large store, a young clerk, just trying to do her job, asked a client "en anglais ou francais?" and a man of a certain age practically shouted out to the whole store in an aggressive tone “En français, on est au Québec, pas au Canada !!!”

Interesting that the zealots never seem to attack two people speaking Spanish, or Arabic, or another language, but only English... focussed racism?

And yes, Anglos have as much history here as most Francophones, as Anglos settled entire regions and established towns throughout this province, but the true history is not an education strongpoint in Qc.”

  8. The really pathetic part is that the hard core separatists don't care that every second house is for sale and that money is leaving quebec never to return plus no investment. I really don't know what it will take go get them to smarten up, if anything. Perhaps no groceries in the store or no gas at the pumps. The only people that are willing to move here and purchase a house now are people that truly think a separate quebec is a viable option and there are few of them. It's not just anglophones that are leaving; a lot of francophones are leaving for areas in Ontario that will gladly sell them a home and appreciate the fact that they are bilingual. Our area is the same with thousands of homes up for sale and no buyers - many are now being rented out to people that move here for the $7.00 day daycare but have no intention of investing one cent. It's quickly turning into a transient area rather than a place that people want to reside and make it their permanent home.

    1. cebeuq is entirely correct, the economy is the last thing on a separatists mind. For your typical separatist, money is simply evil, and they have no problems admitting it. Is it any surprise that every single "successful" Québécois is hated by the seppies?

Also, less investments means less foreign influence, which is a good thing. Once (anglo-owned) businesses close up shop, they can then be taken over by a fair and honest government, to give high-paying union-jobs to real Québécois! - this is the separatist dream, the "Hydro-Quebec Syndrome". (As long as someone else pays for it)

That and the fact that separatists seem to want to live in some fantasy world where money doesn't matter, everyone has everything they need (for free), and everyone is equal and happy. It's a very noble dream, but it's completely unrealistic, and very selfish (paid for by future generations). The continuous demands for free tuition is a perfect example. Separatists seem to have a hard time understanding that the rest of the world won't conform to our way of doing things just because we say so.

And finally, Cutie003, put yourself in the mind of a typical separatist. A drop in the real-estate market means they might eventually be able to afford one of those fancy houses in the west-island they've always complained about so much! Seems like a positive thing when you're living in government-funded low-income housing.

The separatists must get really frustrated when they see that even immigrants do much better than them.. heh

    2. We need to keep repeating this until the point gets across.

Separatists are little more than terminal losers who are destined to a life of chronic underachievement and longing.

They'll never grasp the idea that as citizens of a first world country, they have all the avenues necessary to empower themselves and change both their class status and their direction of their future generations.

I've previous pointed out what wee're all discussing here:

They simply don't possess the ambition and acumen to acquire successful businesses and high-quality homes. Really folks, if you have any doubt, it only takes one look at a popular Hollywood movie to see what will happen.

Go rent Dark Knight Rising and zip over to the part where Bane turns control of Gotham over to convicts and other assorted dregs.

    4. "They simply don't possess the ambition and acumen to acquire successful businesses and high-quality homes."

Many separatists are capitalist minded. The quiet revolution was in many ways a take-over of business by francophones, the economic turning of the tables was the major aim of the quiet revolution despite noble mystification surrounding that event.

What is Quebec's prime minister, but not a socialist in words but a capitalist at heart? Marois paid a visit to Davos recently, went to New York, sent her trusted guy to New York (Boisclair), and then sent her minister there to kiss Wall Street's ass. Not that she had a choice either. As every "leader" in the world, she knows who runs things.

The language issue that occasionally seems to infringe on business is really blown out of proportion. As Editor pointed out, if a major company's well-being is threatened by language politics, the OQLF will be ordered to back off, ordered to grant "dispensation" to the company, and move on to smaller fish (depanneurs, small store run by immigrants, etc...). The point of language politics is not (and has never been) to destroy a business, it is to give priority to that business to "our guys". If business was ever driven out (as Sun Life headquarters), it was an unintended consequence. Since then, the pequistes have learned their lessons, and now they issue waivers to prevent businesses from leaving.

As Quebec journalist/propagandist Isabelle Maréchal lets it slip at 11:58 - "On est capitalist". Despite pretending otherwise sometimes, that's what they are.

      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3oTU7PShvWY

Or check out a major separatist frothing about Quebec being a potential oil producing power. For a self-proclaimed leftist, he is really blurring the lines here.

    6. cutie - Think about it..many Quebecers..the pur-laine seperatists dont care about house prices. They dont care because they will never leave Quebec..they are the ones who dont speak english so they are eternally stuck here. They are the ones who work for the government, the unions - who have a job for life..the lower the price of homes the better for them as they can get a good deal on buying one. 7 dollar a day daycare is great for them..they have cheap housing, cheap daycare - a job for life and they dont even have to work much in their protected job. For many pur-laine Quebecois thats the dream..they just dont realize that one day it will all come crashing down abruptly the day Quebec goes bankrupt. And all those anglos selling and leaving is exactly what they want..they can scoop up more cheap houses..they get rid of more annoying anglos..its a win-win for them. The only people that care about home prices are the anglos because they may have to leave at some point and they will often have to sell their house much lower than they expected.

      Delete
    7. "For many pur-laine Quebecois thats the dream"

Isn't this everyone's dream though? It is mine. After years of bait and switch on the professional market, I wouldn't mind some of that stability that many Quebecois enjoy thanks to their state, even though it will not last forever.

That Quebec doles out the goodies based on ethnicity (and allegiance), and that much of that wealth is covered by transfer payments from the rest of the country (i.e. wrestled out through most vulgar blackmail - give us $$$ or we leave) can't obscure the fact that we would all like to have that level of stability. But we don't, many Quebeckers don't either, and those in the public sector who do won't have it forever.

"They are the ones who work for the government, the unions - who have a job for life"

They have it for life? I don't think so. Neither do you, since you follow up with: ""they just dont realize that one day it will all come crashing down abruptly the day Quebec goes bankrupt"

There are many people who want more than working for the government..who dream big and are willing to work hard to achieve something more than just a government job for life. Tghere are people wont want to run their own small business..others who want to climb the corporate ladder..others who want to travel the world..not everyone dreams of a government job but here in Quebec many do. They have been conditioned to be taken care of by the state and to be do the bare minimum and live the good life..it works for awhile..in fact its worked for at least 50 years so for many people they have had a job for life..but at some point many of these jobs for life will disappear and there will be much gnashing of teeth.

    9. "There are many people who want more than working for the government..who dream big"

      No doubt.

"but at some point many of these jobs for life will disappear and there will be much gnashing of teeth"

In the government and also in the private sector. People's decadent lives are bound to end. Consumption-driven society must fall, whether it's under state or corporate control.

"others who want to climb the corporate ladder"

There are people like that in my company. In good old days, these people were called ass kissers. Today, they're young bright prospects. In most cases however, enthusiasm is all they've got. Skill and character are secondary, personality and presentation are key.

"others who want to travel the world"

      Who doesn't.

"They have been conditioned to be taken care of by the state and to be do the bare minimum and live the good life"

Everybody has been conditioned to do something. Americans for example have been conditioned to chase the fiction called "American Dream", with the help of something called positive thinking.

      Delete
    10. adski - Dont get me wrong..I am not a fan of the american system either by any stretch. I think most of Canada has it about right..Quebec is way way too the left and is a ticking time bomb..the USA has let the banks and large corporations completely take over the government to the detriment of most people. Europe for the most part is in about the same position as Quebec but in the end most Europeans are better educated, more creative and more pragmatic than the typical Quebecois who thinks money grows on trees. So even though Europe has many woes now I think they still have more potential in the end than Quebec.

The problems with Quebec is that too many people are trying to take advantage of the system - there is a culture of people who see no problem in lying and cheating to get what they want from government and from others. The moral fibre of this place is unravelling and once you lose morality then you arent too far away from total collapse. Its not so much the corruption that bothers me than the acceptance of it by most people because in the end too many people are involved in this type of behaviour on a regular basis.

Makes no sense to pay tax on a house valued at $70,000 or $80,000 dollars less than it was and the city still expecting to keep the value at the same rate on which to tax it.

These same students deliberately manipulate votes..ignoring the majority of students who didnt agree with the strikes. This couple will often participate at those war reenactments that are so popular in Quebec City. When I asked why he does it, he answered cause it's fun, and you meet people. When I asked him why he thought the French lost the war, he told me something very interesting. He said that the English were preoccupied with conquering Land but the French were preoccupied with Fur pelts... he said..."In essence..Greed" !! Quebec taxpayers already pay 85 percent of the cost of post secondary education..we already pay far too much. Instead of thanking us students try to shut down the city, hurt businesses who pay their tution fees, block other students from going to school. Quebec students pay the lowest tuition fees in north america..they should be thanking everyone instead of acting like spoiled brats. Maybe they were trying to damage the sidewalks and/or machine to create work for some other union buddy..that might be closer to the truth. You need to live elsewhere for awhile and see how the rest of the country works..you would be surprised how efficient, friendly and honest most people are in these other cities.

Mr. Sauga is right about that, unfortunately for the country, but especially for this doomed province. Out of all the federalists that participate to this blog, I think there are about five of us that have done anything other than bitch here - At least that openly state that they write to papers, magazines, MNAs or the federal government concerning what is really going on with the politics in quebec. That is sad for democracy and certainly does not bode well for our communities. Unless all of us participate in these efforts nothing will change and more and more "no" votes will leave the province to the separatists which is just what they want anyway. And you may seem like a nice guy and all that but people like you encouraging us to leave is part of the problem. You should be fighting for people to remain and take action. In the end the Canadian government should have done the right thing and said this law is illegal under canadian law. Both english and french apparently have the same rights across the country but clearly english is treated as an inferior language in Quebec when you need to put english writing smaller than franch writing and even in municipalities where most people are anglophones..thats really vindictive and cheap on the part of the quebec government. And then you any company with more than 50 employees must operate in french..again that is no business of the government..many companies deal most of the time with anglohphones..why should they be forced to use french. On the other hand many francophones living elsewhere in Canada dont really have many rights to use their language either..although if a francophone wanted to put a sign up only in french anywhere in Canada he could. I recall in Calgary a french bookstore with wording pretty well all in french..nobody cared beacause it was a french bookstore.
Bill 101 is clearly a vindictive revenge tactic used by frustrated francophones who feel that they have neen eternally abused by the anglos and all bad things in their lives are because of the anglos.

Bill 14 wants to take away bilingual rights from municipalites that dont meed some threshold..its another way of stripping rights away from anglophones. Bill 14 wants to force small businesses to conduct their business in french only..this is total crap..since when does the government interfere into private businessnes. If a private business deals mostly with english clients they should bloody well have the right to do so..its none of the governments business. If a company wants to do business in french only in the rest of canada they can do so..the government does not interfere. When a government starts interfering in peoples lives to this point then its time to get very concerned..they should be focusing on improving health care, education, maintaining bridges/roads properly, etc and not running around dictating to honest hard working citizens what language they should be speaking. Its literally a farce..its almost comical yet its reality here.

    12. Complicated: "I am not sure what a minister from the PQ would have to do to win over anglophones anyway"

He/she could start by refraining from spewing out nonsense, like Lisee did rather actively all the way to the election last year, with his L'Actualite article being the high point. ("dude, what did he write in that article that was so bad? back up your arguments with examples"... I can almost hear student chiming in).

In general, even the least outspoken and the most quiet pequiste will have trouble winning over anglos/allos simply because of the fact that the PQ is by definition antagonistic to anglos/allos, and is open about promoting the interests of another ethno-lingusiitc group (it's an ethnic nationalist party, in other words). So one would need to start by not joining the PQ in order to win anglophones (and allophones) over.

Complicated: "Mr.Lisee is the only minister that seems to have the talent, ability and intelligence to pull off the job. Perhaps he comes across as phony..but overall he is trying"

Some have astutely pointed out, that mister lisee quacked up quite a storm before the elections, with regards to anglos. Ultimately, those are his true feelings. I don't consider that just because he can speak English better than most from the PQ...he's actually intelligent or talented. I don't know about anyone else...but everything I see him on TV...he just bugs the hell outa me...with that..phony phony smirk...I ain't buyin' what he's sellin'...sorry...polished English or no polished English...(..mm..but gimme a sec...I'll tell ya how i really feel...LOL)

    14. Lets put it this way - I am not awestruck by Mr.Lisee but he does stand out when compared to all the other ministers who are really awful. Yes he is a charmer..but I give him credit in the sense that he is a polished politician who is fairly intelligent, charming, well spoken, a reasonably good listener and overall polite. Does that mean he is going to fight for anglo rights..no of course not..he is in the PQ but they could have chosen a lot worse than him.

Noone expects anything from him. Most people would like the end to this charade though.

What is the point of his position anyways? If he is not going to help out those with whom he is supposed to liaison, what is his role? To communicate government's decisions? A government spokesman could do this, unless the decisions are expected to be so controversial that you need someone with superficial charm to sell them.

Maybe she is. She is also known to attend functions at the SSJB headquarters, and has been photographed in the company of Mario Beulieau several times. So she is ideologically correct and in line with the PQ (whether opportunistically or out of conviction, I don't know), and has been aptly rewarded with a cabinet post.

However, I do take anything that NoDogs writes about natural resources and environment with a huge dose of skepticism. I have come to suspect that NoDogs Editor has a personal stake in this (profits to gain through business connections).

I am actually surprised by the low road you have chosen in order to attack my credibility.

I do not have any interest in natural resource stocks, nor do I work, consult or in any manner have a stake.
I don't think you (Adski) would appreciate me calling you a supporter of terrorism because you supports Palestinian rights.

Would he appreciate it if I gratuitously suggested that he is probably a whining Palestinian hiding a secret agenda to destroy Israel?

If I object to Martine Ouellet or call her stupid, it doesn't follow that I am acting as a spokesman for the oil industry or that I am protecting my investments. (which I am certainly not)

We're supposed to believe that this lump of a man is a devout environmentalist who is deeply passionate about protecting Mother Earth (like so many seppies arrogantly claim to be)...only for us to discover that this loser was driving around in a Porsche at 225 km/h. So much for being concerned with the environment.

Further, Quebec is abundant in many natural resources that could help alleviate the provincial debt, create more jobs and maybe (with the right government in place), lead to lower taxes.

Martine Ouellet is practicing the tried and true tactic; Tell a lie often enough and people will eventually believe it.
Minister Ouellet knows the difference between a loan guarantee and an actual loan, she is simply knowingly misleading the public to gain political advantage. She is playing on the relative ignorance of Joe/Jane, (excuse me Jacques/Jacqueline), public about finance. How many people, especially in Quebec’s regions, can honestly read and understand an annual report – I bet not too many.

To be fair, the PQ is not the only political party that does this. This tactic is particularly favoured by American political parties especially certain branches/factions of the Republican party. Examples as follows:

    1.
The myth that the 9/11 hijackers entered the US via Canada when in fact they were all in the US legally. All American political parties acknowledge the myth is untrue but they only acknowledge this when directly asked the question; Did the 9/11 hijackers enter the US through Canada Yes or No?

    2.
    The plethora of US Republican statements about President Obama;
2.1 He was not born in the USA
    2.2 He is Muslim....

    Conclusion:
The PQ, in this case minister Ouellet, are simply misleading the people, plain and simple. They are liars!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yes, the above samples are true - when I was in Florida many of US residents told me Obama is Muslim and is not really a US citizen. The lies go on. Such as quebec is not divisible - another myth that the separatists spread and the followers believe.

    2. "The PQ, in this case minister Ouellet, are simply misleading the people, plain and simple. They are liars!"

She can lie all she wants, I suppose that is her prerogative, WHY...however, is no one in main stream media calling her out on it?? Don't we have the 'best' and most 'talented' journalists right here...locally in 'la belle province'. LOL But I suppose if the minister were a mafia figure they would be hot on her tail. The fact that she's a lying, duplicitous and despicable PQ politician who intentionally misleads the citizenry, hurting and harming it in the process, isn't a worthwhile story I suppose....maybe they were paid off...who knows....anything goes in this completely corrupt unethical dishonest and shady province.

That's another thing that's really beginning to bug me to no end. The so-called media, who is suppose to report the news honestly and objectively, OR AT LEAST MAKE AN ATTEMPT TO DO SO... is sooooooooo bloody jaded, ESPECIALLY in this province, lately, I am less inclined to read what's written and reported here on a daily basis.

      Delete
    3. Nope - the reporters here in quebec never give the full story or the real facts behind the stories unless it's balanced on the side of the separatists. One has to wonder about our true journalists - there doesn't seem to be much integrity in their work in this province. I would imagine that fear is a factor - there are some crazies that support independence and they don't even try to hide their underlying propensity to intimidation.

  15. Editor,

To be fair to the Leafs, if one assesses their loss on a single game basis, their game 7 meltdown was not that much worse than the Habs' game 4 meltdown against the Sens. Habs was leading 2-0, they needed to hold those 2 goals in the last 10 minutes, they even needed to hold against being scored in the last 30 seconds, but they could not. While the Leafs could not hold their one goal advantage in the last one minute, did the Habs not do worse?

Of course if one looks at the bigger picture the Leafs held bigger at stake. Should they were able to hold that one goal they would have won the series and gone to the second round whereas should the Habs were able to hold that one goal they would only have tied the series 2-2 and who knows what could have happened next. Maybe to be fair you should also posted the picture of the Bell Center being empty with 5 more minutes to play on game 5.

On the main topic: I can not wait what you will post on your second part the next time. What will you give Diane de Courcy if you already gave Ouellet, Breton and Kotto "F"? A "Z", maybe? :-)

PS: Regarding your comment about Nicole Léger: "She's another big fat bust....er sorry!", do you not think that her last name is a little bit of an irony?

I think there is some sort of mental inferiority complex now with Canadian teams..they must expect to lose whenever they play an american team. It seems the only way a Canadian team can win is if it plays another Canadian team..example the Ottawa Senators. The Sens have about as much hope of beating Pittsburgh as I do of playing for the Canadiens next year..

There is a giant difference between the Leafs and the Habs. The leafs missed winning the play offs by only one goal. Canadians were nowhere near it. Ed
The fact that the 911 terrorists came from Canada was a lie raised in the U.S. senate by Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina. In the aftermath of 9/11 they were worried that terrorists might have come in through the open Mex-US border. They spoke about closing it and ejecting illegals. Graham and other southerners could not have that because they needed the cheap labour. so he pointed the finger in the other direction, at Canada. He also suggested that tanks be set up along the border with Canada because Canadians were flowing into the U.S. illegally. Paul Martin told them, "Do what you want but it's a waste of time. I assure you no self respecting Canadian would want to live in the U.S. Ed

Also the labour minister is in the front row while the health minister is behind the premier. What are the premier priority?

In fact, none of the statements quoted in the above example was actually made by Prime Minister Gillard.

      FROM Urbanlegends.about.com:
“Viral message quotes Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard purportedly telling Muslim immigrants they must speak the English language and adapt to Australian culture or leave the country.”
      Description: Forwarded email
Circulating since: Sep. 2005 (various versions)
      Status: FALSELY attributed to Gillard

      FROM Hoax or Fact.com:
“These messages have been circulating through emails and social networks in several variants since 2005. All these messages talk about the issue of Islamic Sharia law in Australia, claiming that immigrant Muslims in Australia must agree and abide by the parliamentary laws of Australia. The messages also claim that the Prime Minister of Australia, Julia Gillard (others in older versions of messages) has asked the Muslims who want to live under Islamic Sharia law to get out of Australia. There is an element of truth about the concerns of Islamic Sharia law and Muslims terror in Australia, but all these messages are misinterpreted, misquoted and exaggerated versions of various discussions of Australian government officials and other editorial writings.

Most immigrants move for economic reasons. Most learn the local language. Some don't, no point pretending otherwise. But why are they so dangerous?

Picking on immigrants as in the Australian example is cheap political jingoism, easy points to score with the local population in insecure economic times. And it doesn't always relate to the immigrant's physical inability to speak the local language, but to the lack of deference on the part of immigrants to the "hosts".

Immigrants are supposed to know their place. The "hosts" don't like it when immigrants get too independent, especially with economic uncertainty looming large.

  18. Unreasonable accommodation for Jewish holiday?

    http://www.cjad.com/CJADLocalNews/entry.aspx?BlogEntryID=10545149

Citizenship minister Bernard Drainville says an NDG-CDN accommodation for a Jewish high holiday goes too far, and he foresees it leading to other problems. The borough has removed parking restrictions during the Shavuot holiday because some observant Jews cannot drive to move their cars. The policy has existed for nearly three decades.

Minister Drainville says the followers of other religions are now likely to also require different road signs based on their various beliefs. "We can't have rules for road signs according to religion because then it will never end." The minister says no accommodation is necessary, because the rules do not discriminate. "All that it does it create an argument. All that it does is create resentment. It divides us instead of uniting us."

Marvin Rotrand, a local-area city councillor, says the NDG-CDN has had the practice since 1984, and Drainville's concerns have yet to materialize. There may be another reason the minister is making on issue of this policy now, says Liberal MNA Lawrence Bergman. "Along comes a PQ minister who is perhaps showing his true colours of intolerance," he says.

Drainville says the situation in NDG-CDN shows the need for clear rules on secularism and religious accommodation. His party had originally suggested a new charter would be tabled this spring. However, the deadline to present such a bill at the National Assembly was this morning, and nothing was produced. The minister says first the PQ will present a white paper that outlines options for public discussion.

François Legault questions whether party in-fighting is putting a damper on the project. "Mister Drainville is saying we should have some rules, but we are not ready to table any rules. Why do they wait?"

Heck Bernard Drainville is a complete and utter reject of his own party. After challenging Pauline, he was relegated to the unpleasant ministry of citizenship. Also why is the minister involve in municipal affairs. Parking is to be controlled by the cities not the provincial government, understand Pauline and Bernard. IS THIS UNDERSTOOD? I don't want to have to go to Quebec City to pay a parking ticket. Why is that so hard to understand Bernard?

The PQ is really scraping the barrel!

If you want to be even more shocked, just have a look at the comments written by the good citizens of Quebec City (in particular, that of Mario Lessard):

Isn't there some kind of law whereby you can take a publicly elected official to task for 'intentionally' inciting conflict in order to further some kind of personal/political agenda? It seems to me that if there has never been a problem here in NDG with this issue and this moron sticks his nose into it just to create conflict and problems AND THAT IS HIS INTENTION then certainly there should be some provision in the law to address this?? The lawyers in the room???

    9. Talk about complicating our lives needlessly. This is yet another example of politicians worrying about, and attempting to create, problems that do not exist. Why doesn't minister Drainville and his government worry about the real problems in our society such as the drop-out rate in our schools, battered women and children, unemployment, and the list could go on and on.
