Was Sunday's Demonstration a Success?

Readers, I'm out of town and actually unable to complete the post I had planned on publishing today.

I apologize.

I've opened up this new post to allow readers to comment on yesterday's anti-Bill 14 demonstration.
Read a story about it

If you attended, how about a first person description?

Otherwise it's an open forum today, anything goes!

I am traveling back home to Canada today (Monday)  and will resume posting  on Wednesday....the title....
"Radio-Canada serves up Chinese Fodder"

  1. If just one person showed up, it would have been a success.

I've heard estimates from 200 (the press) to 1,000 (from people at the rally who claimed they did a head count).

  4. I was there. I would peg the attendance around 200-300. The success is in the fact it got good media coverage (see front page of the gazette) and it got under the skin of the hardliners. Problem is most people opposed to Bill 14 are not activist types and think this dreadful government is a short term thing.

  5. Personally I think the very NEED for a protest on Anglo rights in this country is outrageous. How did it ever get this far? Good on you folks who showed up/supported this rally. Wish I could have joined you, but alas, living in Edmonton I don't get to travel through Montreal as much as I used to. How about a quick story? Everybody has heard about the "big bad Alberta rednecks", right? The truth is there are many French-language resources here in AB., including an "access emploi" or employment office dedicated to helping job-seekers with all kinds of assistance in obtaining employment in Alberta, including lucrative oilsands work. This is set up and funded by the Alberta government and is just one of many programs and resources available to Frenck speakers. The last time I worked in Ft. McMurray I met literally dozens of Quebecers who couldn't believe how actually hospitable it is for a Quebecer to live and work here. When was the last time you heard of the Quebec government go out of their way to encourage Anglos to have anything? It is a gross double standard in this country.
I left Quebec in 1980. One of the reasons was my father, a tradesman with over 35 years of top grade experience was unable to work in James Bay during the seventies because of his being Anglo. It was (and is) virtually impossible for an Anglo last name to get on these big projects in Quebec, but the rest of us bend over backwards for the seppies to be able to be mobile across this country.I am so sick of it. Anyway, I love the site, love the comments on here, and empathize with you Anglos (or any freedom-loving Quebecer) still under the PQ/BQ hammer.

    I was there...

The ONLY reason the Turn-out was so low, was that it was FRRREEEEEEZZZZZZIIING !!!! The media is not reflecting how much the cold effected the turnout.

The Turnout was about 250-300 Anti-Bill 14.... ONE Lone PQ Bill 14 Supporter.... Very lonely.. very Cold! Just a reflection of the true differences in commitment, I'd say.

The Crowd was motivated and engaged.. the Speakers had a great reception.. and speeches were presented in BOTH Official languages ... LOTS of Media... CJAD did a surprisingly marvelous job of helping Promote the event.

BUT... the most encouraging thing of all was the LARGE (maybe 50% or more) contingent of NON-Anglophones... Francophones may have outnumbered Anglos... The Times they ARE a'Changin'!

Kudos to the Organizers... The Unity Group, and PutBackTheFlag.com !!!!

So happy that there were many non-anglophones that participated with the group. Again, though, the press are calling it an "Anglo Protest". I wish they would realize that this bill hurts everyone in quebec, businesses, private citizens and francophones alike. The whole thing should be abolished for the good of the province. There are so many groups that are now organizing to boycott quebec that publicity for that alone should bring about changes if we want to regain any prosperity. The press should start writing about that too. I will also welcome the chance to have a different party to vote for come next election - we've really had no choice in this supposed democracy for a long time so welcome back Equality Party 2.0.

  8. There is one of many disturbing aspects of bill 14 and even the current law on bilingual status designation for a municipalities. It differentiates between Mother Tongue anglophones and 1st official language anglophones. Which means basically that Quebec discriminates based on ethnic heritage. Its very discriminatory. I wonder if there is a charter challenge available to the municipalities that have allophones and anglophones who prefer English as the language of service.

I think this point should be emphasized more.

    1. Or Quebec could elect the Fiscal Conservative Party of Quebec (FCPQ) to clean up the province mess. Money is being wasted on language police, and many other useless program like mini-embassies and bloated unions. The FCPQ would invest money in Schools, Hospitals, and infrastructure project.

      Delete
    2. Liam - the CAQ have only promised not to back the total Bill 14 - We need them to block the whole damn thing not just parts of it. The liberals have said they will not support it so no it's up to Legault or portions of it will go through. If the conservatives would form a new party this would also give us another option. Boy, we have plenty of useless programs that could be eliminated plus corruption.

      Delete
    3. I would love to see the FCPQ elected but it will never happen. The party is not on anyones radar..plus Quebecers are just way too far to the left in general. They also really dislike the federal conservative party. Once again if one wants any hope of real change then you would need to elect a viable party like the CAQ. The CAQ is about as far to the right as is possible in this province. The Liberals under Couillard or Bachand would mean more of the same mismanagement we have had under Charests reign. But of course most people here prefer to live in la-la land where they believe the equality party and the fcpq have a viable chance of making a difference..good luck with that. I will keep my feet firmly planted on terra firma.

      Delete
    4. Nothing in this province will ever change if we don't vote in a party that WILL MAKE CHANGES. The CAQ party is a separatist party for God's sake. Do you think they will revoke Bill 101 or stop persecuting the minorities? All you're worried about is the economy but the economy can't and will never recover under separatist administrations! Yes they promise to take on the unions and to work on the economy but until we get our cultural and language differences settled, it will take a lot more than a new budget to fix these problems. There is a hell of a lot more here that is stopping businesses from moving here than high taxes and unions and the CAQ will not help with those problems. Good grief people, we have to start electing representatives that will make fundamental changes to the whole of the province's hatred of anything other than pur laine francophones! Rights and freedoms under the Canadian Constitution have to be restored to make this place attractive to anyone with an active brain cell!

The Liberals have not done anything to stop the decline of Quebec..the infrastructure continued to crumble at an accelerated rate under their rule..the mob ran rampant under their rule..the city of Montreal was involved in outrageous corruption under their rule. And what exactly have the Liberals done for anglophones..nothing..they grab our vote..they tell us thet dont take us for granted and then they ignore us year after year. Did you already forget that Charest was willing to toughen up Bill 101..he said that just before the election in a desperate move. The CAQ are unlikely to solve all the problems..but I cant imagine them being worse than the Liberals.

      Delete
    8. We don't know that they are more corrupt than the PQ - still need a new party - the Equality Party rather than the CAQ. Dammit complicated we need a new FEDERALIST provincial party, not another separatist party. What I'm worried about is the way we are perceived by the ROC if we elect a new "separatist" party in this place. If we have any chance of changing things by way of partitioning this place, areas that vote for a separatist party, no matter which one, will be seen as condoning and encouraging separation of quebec from Canada. What do you think will happen to our chances then of attracting new business, new citizens, new anything to this province? I for one, and I hope many more, will vote for the new Equality Party if they can get the paperwork done by the time another election is called. Meanwhile, I'm stuck with voting for a liberal party that does not believe in liberty for all - sucks, but that's the way it is.

      Delete
    9. You have got to be kidding me..we KNOW they are more corrupt than the PQ..how many more witnesses do you need before the Charboneau commission spilling their sordid tales..and we KNOW the Liberals were in charge while all these shenanigans were going on. These are FACTS. You choose to bury your head in the sand and stick your fingers in your ears and chant the same old song...the Liberals are the only choice we have.
The equality party in the most optimistic of scenarios would never get more than 2 or 3 seats..explain to me how this is going to be of any use to the anglophone community. It will just paint the anglophones are troublemakers and it will give us no power..a total waste or resources and time IMO.
Attracting new businesses..frankly only the CAQ seems to have a credible plan and more right wing agenda. You are not going to attract businesses to Quebec with the same old Liberal party mismanagement and incompetence. You will attract businesses here with a government that is serious about cutting taxes, ending corruption, cutting waste in the government and taking on the unions. There is only one party right now of the three viable ones who has an agenda to do just that..it is the CAQ. Now we can be incredibly cynical and use the argument that how do we know if they are not corrupt. All I can say is that we cant AFFORD another 5 years of Liberal and PQ mismanagement..they have more than their fair share of chances and both parties have utterly failed..how you can still come up with anything positive to say about the Liberals is beyond delusional. So I am willing to take a chance on the CAQ who will put the seperation question on the back burner for 10 years.

have we thought for a moment that our children are already overwhelmed and mentally conquered by the English and often downright acculturated? Have you thought about what will motivate all Cunneyworth and Jonh B. Cieslak in the world to make the slightest effort to learn French if everyone speaks English as well as they? They will continue to surround himself with underlings and employees bilingual or English, it will be enough. CPFQ did not want to venture into this field and preferred to be servile and partisan arm of government. Its president, Gaston Rioux, beautiful game bulge torso, her ploy which has magically transform popular support to strengthen the teaching of English as a solid support program falsely sloppy and harmful. Mr. Rioux must do its homework and provide parents the real issues of the debate. Until now, they could not pronounce knowingly.
Otherwise, in 2015, when a child has Quebec consciousness to exist, it will be acutely aware that the English are. The early English become consubstantial with his identity, is pegged to the heart, privileges normally reserved for the mother tongue. Examples of Louisisane and New Brunswick are so desirable? Comes a time when parents need to stand up and say: "Enough is enough!"

I'm glad that the lawyers pick up on these "little" nuances that the separatists try to hide from the public. We must get rid of these seppies - On with a partition movement!

  18. Quebec as a whole is ungovernable. The interest of Saguenay, Magdelen Isaland, Quebec City, Montreal, and Outaouais are out of touch. We need a devolved power where municipalities have more power, like in Ontario. In Ontario, city are free to determine if they are bilingual. City Hall votes, not a meaningless politician located in a far away provincial capital. If a county wants bilingual sign it can have some. I don't care what guy in Seperatis Saguenay think.

    ReplyDelete
  19. You and me both Liam - and I agree that right now it is ungovernable - we really have to give serious thoughts as to how to get rid of those that want to leave without killing all of us off (bankrupt wise - before anyone starts beating the drums) at the same time. The 60% that want to prosper and be part of a Canada the way it stands have to be given the right to do that somehow. Having 40 or even 51% ruin us is undemocratic and dangerous.

    ReplyDelete
  20. The way things have been going, I wouldn't be surprised if a federal politician would allow a three answer referendum with two options saying no and one option saying yes and let the response with the plurality of votes be considered a "clear majority".

    ReplyDelete
  21. Well I'm sure not embarrassed to say I've been doing all I can, as an individual, to fight back with letters to the federal, provincial and municipal governments. The federal government has a responsibility in all this harassment too and are going to be forced to take action of some kind in the near future even if it involves amendments to the constitution. Whether quebec signs it or not is tough because they ignore it now anyway - our problem lies with the other provinces signing an amendment to change the clauses affecting languages but it may happen because the ROC is fed up with quebec forcing everything in french and the ROC trying to appease them is getting very expensive. Why should they be paying out extra money to help keep french alive and well and quebec doing everything they can to kill off english within it's own borders? Doesn't make much sense so who can blame them. Anyway, I guess for now it's a waiting game - everyone reading this blog and every politician mouthing off out there will be dead and gone unless there is action behind the scenes that we are not privy too. Let's hope so.

  22. Hey S.R. - It's small minded, bigoted little fascists such as yourself who need to get out of town. Half of my ancestors are French Canadian, whose roots on this continent are as deep as your own, and the other half are of varied origins, with roots stretching back 240 years. Je parle francais, but I prefer English. I don't curse others of French origins who prefer French, but neither should they shit on the rest of us who prefer the other official language of this great county. People like you are a cancer in Canadian society. You will all lost eventually however, as international immigrants want their children to be fluent in the international language, and over the generations, you will eventually lose the demographic clout necessary to continue abusing everyone else's fundamental human rights and freedoms. When the old stock French Canadian portion of the population dips under 70% (which will happen eventually since you refuse to reproduce), intolerant little nationalist pricks like you will be marginalized. Unfortunately, I may be on Viagra by the time that happens, but mark my words, it will happen. As for now, people with your mindset just need to retreat to the Saguenay and get the fuck out of OUR parts of the province (namely the Island or Montreal, in particular the West Island).

Anyone and everyone on this blog can tell you the truth. Quebec is the only province in Canada that is trying to exterminate a language and that language is English. They go against all other provinces to try to break up the country - that is their only purpose not to preserve their language but to create a country right in the middle of our country of Canada.

  24. Premier ask a direct question to Quebec: Should Quebec separate from Canada? Yes or No. No "sovereign-associated" , no separate but still receiving equalization payments, no constitutional agreement with veto. If Quebec goes, no special tribunal, no financial compensation. Also, Quebec will have to take it share of the national debt. Levesque and Parizeau tricks will not work this time.

If the referendum fails, it end. No neverendum, no constitutional privileges. Quebec is rapidly becoming a unstable economy. Our roads are falling down, our hospital are unsafe and too many quebeckers have to go to Ontario for health care because this province has no more money.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Liam - yes the question has to be clear but remember that there are more federalists than separatists and that's why we have to find a solution that allows those areas that want to remain Canadian have a constitutional right to do so - therein lies the biggest problem. If it were not for that I would say push them to hell out.

  25. They can separate, however we'll keep the far north (Rupertland), Montreal, the Outaouais, the Chateauguay River Valley, the Eastern Townships and a land bridge across to New Brunswick.

This will frustrate low-life bigots and French supremacists like S.R., because they know that their Republique des Patates Frites will be an unviable rump state of dogshit right from the outset, that will be screaming to the IMF for help within 30 days (their first debt payment), and likely come crawling back to Canada tail between their legs and hat in hand.

    The steps are as follows:

    1. We will prevent the enactment of Bill 14.

    2. We will finance litigation to overturn key commercial provisions of Bill 101 (signage, language of the workplace provisions, etc.), which we will win because the simple facts are that, in the long term, (50 years) French is not endangered in Quebec.

    3. Once we overturn the law, we will dare the bigots to re-enact it under the Notwithstanding Clause.

    4. We will pressure the federal government, which has virtually no Quebec representation and is thus not beholden to the bigoted, nationalist political complex in Quebec, to disallow the legislation under the federal government's residual power under the BNA Act to disallow any provincial legislation within 2 years of its enactment.

    5. The national socialists in Quebec will stir up resentment over the fact that the federal government has finally grown a pair and is now dedicated to the defence of fundamental rights and liberties across the entire country, when violated by Boss Hogg type governments in the provinces, such as Pauline and her gang of imbeciles.

    6. Another referendum will be called, at which point the national socialists will either (a) lose, following which we will finally have peace across this great country or (b) they will win, at which point the partition of Quebec, as described above, will render it a bankrupt failed state within a month.

  27. Fellow Proud Canadians in Quebec,

I wanted to pass on some information regarding a recently established civil rights group, that I thought might be of interest to the readers of this site. The name of the organization is Canadian Rights in Quebec (“CRITIQ”), and the group is staging a free conference at the Delta Hotel next Thursday (the 28th) starting at 6:00 pm. The focus of the group is to educate on and advocate for the protection of the fundamental rights and freedoms of all Canadians living in Quebec, and to support (financially or otherwise) legal challenges to the Charter of the French Language, most of which are being handled by constitutional litigator Brent Tyler, and which are set to kick off next year. CRITIQ seeks to educate the public on these issues and fundraise so as to finance constitutional litigation that it hopes will overturn this shameful system. Below is the launch press release that went out a few weeks ago.

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

NEW CIVIL RIGHTS GROUP ESTABLISHED IN QUEBEC

Montreal, January 29, 2013 - Canadian Rights in Quebec (“CRITIQ”) is a Quebec-based organization dedicated to the protection in Quebec of rights and freedoms invested in all Canadian citizens by our nation’s constitution.

CRITIQ is not a political party, nor does it aspire to such status. CRITIQ seeks to:

    (a) Answer a recent call to leadership with respect to the denunciation of all language-based intolerance and discrimination in Quebec;

    (b) Advocate on behalf of all Quebecers, in favour of government policy that recognizes the equality of the French and English languages in Quebec.

    As such, CRITIQ:

    1. Supports the fundamental freedom of Canadian citizens residing in Quebec to choose in which language they wish to live, work, and receive education for themselves and for their children.

    2. Calls for the provincial government to accept linguistic equality through the formal recognition by the National Assembly of English as one of Quebec’s two “official languages”.

    3. Recognizes the binding nature of the judgment rendered by the Supreme Court of Canada in Reference Re Secession of Quebec [1998], and in particular supports the fundamental right of any region, municipality or aboriginal territory of Quebec to remain part of Canada following any secession of Quebec.

In accordance with its principles, CRITIQ stands in opposition to all Quebec-based, discriminatory legislation violating the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms (the “Charter”). As such, CRITIQ views The Quebec Charter of the French Language (“Bill 101”), as socially regressive, economically damaging and fundamentally in breach of the Charter. CRITIQ seeks to actively and formally support litigation seeking the invalidation of those portions of Bill 101 that violate the fundamental rights and freedoms of Quebecers, and seeks to rally all Canadians in support of this cause.

Please join CRITIQ in our efforts to use logic, reason and the rule of law to put an end to 35 years of state-sponsored discrimination in Quebec, and to improve the quality of life for all Quebecers.

I hope so as I don't live in Montreal but am very interested in your platform. Thank you all for your hard work and let's hope that things progress relatively quickly so this place can start to breath again. There is an interview with Coulliard tomorrow at noon on CTV News Montreal but when asked the question about whether or not he will appoint a special ambassador for anglophones if elected, he says no - all quebecers are the same so why would we need an ambassador for anglophones. So that goes to show that he feels were all treated fairly the way things stand - come on Equality Party - we can see where the liberals are headed AGAIN! Dr. Coulliard - in case you're reading this, we are not all the same - francophones have been provided the power to "slap" us around at their will! This is Canada - you have an obligation to ensure that ALL citizens of this country have the SAME RIGHTS AND FREEDOMS. The citizens of quebec do not have constitutional rights and freedoms. DO YOU NOT UNDERSTAND THIS? You are a bright surgeon so surely this is not over your head. No Bill 101, No Bill 14 - all these bills concerning language divisions must be abolished for this province to thrive and survive!

    5. Hey S.R. - Remove the excrement from between your ears. Percentages are irrelevant. The Godfather of Quebec Demography, Jacques Henripin, upon whose original writings back in the late 60s all this bullshit language legislation is based, is on record as stating that his earlier views were completely wrong, that there is no long term (50 years) threat to the French language in Quebec, and that in fact the only threatened minority here in the one that speaks English. In any event, all of that is irrelevant, as the purpose of a democracy is to secure the natural individual rights and liberty of its citizenry. What a democracy has absolutely no role in, is the immutable perpetuation of a given ethno-linguistic group upon a given piece of territory. This is not a democracy. This is an "ethnocracy". That's what Quebec has essentially become. An inwards looking ethnocracy, given its life by a Canadian federal government too frightened by the existential questions that the spectre of separation raise, that it has resigned itself to trading rights and freedoms for a segment of its citizenry (non-Francophone Quebecers) in return for perceived national unity.

What makes this Quebec ethnocracy all the more absurd, is that the numerically dominant ethnic group (French Canadians) has manufactured this myth that they alone are entitled to the entirety of the territory, all on the basis of (a) this false notion of a superior quality of attachment to the landmass we know as "Quebec" and (b) by the equally bogus assertion that they should have superior entitlement to the territory on the basis of their slightly longer period of permanent settlement in certain parts of Quebec (because there were many parts of Quebec first permanently settled by British immigrants), notwithstanding that they themselves displaced the indigenous population before being forced to share the territory with other European ethnic groups.

All to say, S.R., you are an ignorant fucking simpleton, who will one day see your racist dreams dashed against the rocks in the face of ongoing immigration to Quebec that will dilute your tribe down to nothing and hopefully bring democratic government to Quebec once and for all.

    8. Hey S.R. - Glad to see I'm putting you to sleep. Here's some music from the the Stones to help you go nighty-night, "Ti-i-i-ime is on my si-ide, YES it is!"

The next 30 years will see the French Canadian population grow in absolute numbers (which will ensure their continued existence as a viable ethnic group for the next century at least), but will witness a decline in their share of the Quebec population (particularly the youthful elements), which will ultimately break their stranglehold on political power in this province.

The Quebec "nationalists" love to speak of their constant linguistic insecurity. What they never tell us however, is that it's not insecurity as to their long-term collective existence as a distinct ethnic group that preoccupies them. It's the insecurity that, as their relative demographic weight declines, they'll lose the power to abuse the minorities in their midst, which will likely lead to the democratic abolishment of a vile little piece of legislation (the Charter of the French Language), which serves no other purpose other than to denigrate the minorities of this province, and re-distribute wealth, influence and power away from non-Francophones into the hands of French Canadians.

Be afraid S.R....be very afraid, for one day the music will stop playing, there will be no chairs left, and the people who have been abused for so long will be happy to do unto the other as the other has done unto them. Je sais que tu chi dans tes culottes, mon p'tit mangeur de marde. Il a de bonnes raisons d'avoir peur.
