Equality Party 2.0 Selects Interim Leader

As I mentioned a while back, The Equality party is in the process of re-forming, now going through the necessary steps to become certified with the Directeur général des élections  du Québec (DEG), a process that gives official standing and allows the party to run candidates in the next provincial election.
It seems that in the eyes of the election commissioner the old Equality Party has lapsed and cannot be resurrected.

And so the whole process of creating a political party must start from scratch, including collecting memberships, filling out forms, providing a deposit, etc. etc.

Until the time that the party is official, posts will be filled on an interim basis, pending a general membership vote.

This last weekend, the interim committee selected Mark S. Bergeron as the interim leader and if you are not familiar with the name, let me refresh your memory.

"A Quebec couple has lodged a complaint with the province’s ambulance service after they say a paramedic refused to speak to them in English as their daughter suffered a seizure.
Last weekend, Mark Bergeron and Stephanie Hansen of Vaudreuil, just outside Montreal, called an ambulance for their two-year-old daughter Ella, who was convulsing and unresponsive with a febrile seizure. Children can have these types of seizures when they develop a fever and their body temperature rises quickly."
“Her eyes were closed, she was unconscious,” Bergeron told CTV Montreal. “She wasn’t responding to anything (the paramedics) were doing.”
Bergeron is bilingual, but began having trouble understanding medical terms the paramedics were using in French, and so asked if they could all switch to English.
“With a lot of hostility in his voice he basically said to me, ‘No, moi je parle francais,’ meaning that I had to address him in the language that he was comfortable with in this situation, which in my opinion was absolutely unacceptable,” Bergeron said. Read and watch an interview with Mark
The incident convinced Mark to get involved with this new version of the Equality Party, one that will speak up for individual rights as well as other economic and social issues from a federalist standpoint.

 Here is a bio provided to me;
I was born in Montreal on February 23, 1976 to an Anglophone father and Italian mother.

My paternal grandfather was a rare Anglo Bergeron and my paternal grandmother was Hungarian. My father, however, was raised by his Hungarian grandparents and only learned to speak English at the age of 6.

My mother was born in Italy and her family came to Canada in search of a better life when she was young. My grandfather passed away shortly after arriving in Canada and my grandmother raised 5 children on her own in Montreal, speaking nothing but Italian her entire life.
We were raised in the West Island, born in Kirkland, spent my teenage years in Beaconsfield, and finally settled in Hudson in 1993.

I attended French school throughout my formative years, from Pre-School to Grade 4, at École St. Rémi in Beaconsfield. From there, I attended private school, Lower Canada College, in NDG until graduation in 1993. In 1994, I opted for LCC’s Pre-University program in lieu of CEGEP, which allowed me advanced placement in University, outside of Quebec. The program is not recognized by Quebec institutions.

In the fall of 1995, I left Quebec for the University of New Brunswick, Fredericton campus. My first two years were in the Science program, specializing in Biology. My father, however, convinced me to switch into the Business Administration Program so that I could run the family business. I graduated in the Spring of 2000 with a BBA (Bachelor of Business Administration) with a Major in Finance.
In April 2001, shortly following my return to Montreal, I completed both the Canadian Securities Course (with High Honours) and the Insurance of Persons course offered by La Chambre de la Sécurité Financière.

My return to Montreal included my wife, a unilingual, Anglo New Brunswicker, and  we settled down in Montreal West. We lived there for eleven years until our family (We have 3 children) outgrew our place and moved to Vaudreuil-Dorion.

I work alongside my father as a Financial Security Advisor, managing a client base of over 2,000 individuals, and approaching $70 million of assets under management. Essentially, I am a self-employed financial services broker, but the aforementioned is my official title. In addition, I am Vice-President of my father’s corporation.
A while back, I wrote a piece describing why I think a political party representing equal rights is important and why a seat in Parliament is not as important as one would intuitively think.

Firstly, as a bone fide political party, the leader could not be kept off the airwaves and would naturally have the "right of reply" to those who propose limits on personal freedom.
As of now, despite the best efforts of those in the Anglo/Ethnic community who have organized lobby groups, nobody is called upon to offer a defence of individual rights in the mainstream media, when those rights are attacked by franco-supremacists.

Let me put it bluntly, when loudmouths, like Mario Beaulieu spout their nonsensical ethnocentric rhetoric on television, the Equality party can rightfully demand (and in my opinion will receive) the right to counter those arguments. The media, like it or not, will have no other choice but to present a response from a bone fide political party in the interests of fairness.

Secondly, the leader of a bone fide political party can speak with some authority across Canada, bringing the message to Canadians that personal rights are being infringed in Quebec and that it is the duty of those in the ROC to defend those rights, rather than just give up on Quebec and the millions of Canadians living here who don't want to be abandoned and who do not wish to flee.

The coming per vote subsidy can provide tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of dollars in funding, money that can be used to build support in Ottawa and the ROC for a defence of our individual and collective rights.

As for specific policies I'm not going to presume to speak for the party or the leader, the former and the latter will no doubt apprise the public as to what it is the Equality Party 2.0 stands for.

I have been provided this quick policy comparison which you can peruse in detail by clicking on the illustration.

FAIR DISCLOSURE:
As a political organizer, I have been asked to provide advice to those creating the new Equality party and have done so willingly.
I have filled out a membership form and will certainly vote Equality in the next provincial election.

That being said, I HAVE NO OFFICIAL capacity and do not speak for party. That will be up to the leader and the executive, again of which, I am not a member.

I hope you will take up membership and support the party whichever way you can.

While the party gets its ducks in a row by going the the process of becoming 'official' in the eyes of the law, you contact the party through this email that was provided to me.

  2. I met Mark and I was impressed and I like his bio. He is very poised, knowledgeable, determined, and definitely has charisma which is very important in politics.

I Ithink he would be a great leader for the Equality Party 2. I totally agree with all of you that a francophone leader is very important. A francophone public will listen more carefully about the positions of the party. Bilingual francos, allos are soooo fed up with this separation garbage and the forced down the throat French dictatorial crazyness that many of us are thinking of leaving. Since 1961, over 600,000 tax payers have left Québec and the exodus continues.

I am personally seeing real estate reps to check the market. I have a feeling that not that many people want to buy right now...the PQ will put us back another 20 years. It is in deep shit financially. We can never get ahead. We have to kick the PQ out and scrap Bill 14. Enough is enough!

The Liberals never did anything to help the anglophones who have had a very big part in building Montreal. Bourassa accepted to ignore anglos and theother PM followed his example.Bunch of weaklings when it comes to rights. So embarassing. The French media continues apart from a few stars, to keep francophones in the dark about the repercutions of such stupid laws like Bill 14...fearful of being reprimended by the gurus. It is indeed very sad to see la Société Dstincte living in such ignorance because of fear of reprisal. Which commentator will take on the job of educating the public about what is going on behind their backs and destroying the fibres of this nation.

I can understand the fear... because we know how many people who speak up get death threats from separtists over and over again...that's how they hope to win by keeping us in fear of speaking up. I speak up all the time...hope you all come to my funeral. Good luck to all of you.

So how is this province, who aspires to be a country, different that an Egypt or a Syria? To reiterate what has been stated time and time again on this blog, “and you want to make a country out of this?”

    2. Yes Renee - They do have control because of fear and far too many of us have sat back and said nothing for far too long. I've even written a snotty e-mail to IF asking that they cease and desist from attacking everything English in Gatineau but they did not respond. I too worry about retaliation but I can't, in all conscience, keep quiet any longer. What kind of person would I be if I let my rights and freedoms be infringed upon without saying a word? We're supposed to be living in a free country but, in quebec, we have let these same rights and freedoms slip away with our silence. I for one, am glad to see a new federalist provincial party on the horizon and I will become and member and talk as many people into voting for them as I'm able. I hope they run candidates strategically so that we will not split the vote and let those damn PQ, or another separatist party (which is most of them) back into power. Thank you for joining us.

    1. Quebec liberals are morally bankrupt. In a democracy at the highest levels they should be kicked out for abstaining.

If they can;t take a position or are too afraid to why are they in that seat?

The obvious answer is they are basically the same as the PQ. The only difference is minor variations on language. The Liberals are deathly afraid of being painted as an anglo suporting party in public.

    2. The liberals should be supporting ALL federalists in this province by insisting that we have the same rights and freedoms as the ROC and not skirting the issue every time it comes up. They have been a huge disappointment to us for a long time and are nearly as bad as the PQ if not the same. The only things that improve when they are in power is our economy does not suffer the same stagnation and our real estate market does improve - other than those two things, nothing else is done to improve our lives here. They know they have us in a stranglehold and don't care because we had no choice but to vote for them. Now we will have a choice and I'm so glad to see this.

    5. You mean the Liberals who were in power of, a have not province who has driven investment and jobs out itself due to language laws, who needs to give huge tax credits out to have companies even consider operating here. That then went through a recession, while at the same time huge funds needed to be put into crumbling infrastructure that has hardly had any maintenance since the 60's?

Yeah I just have no idea how they could have racked up some debt over the span of over a decade.

      Delete
    6. @jmic75

yes i mean them. it's not "some debt", it's a third of the debt, mate. fuc%&$in' massive incompetence in my humble opinion. or part of a strategy.

      Delete
    7. I'm sure you've adjusted the increase in the debt to account for inflation? A dollar today certainly doesn't go as far as a dollar from the pre-existing debt, as well as removed money spent on investments as every other government has done in the past. You then took this figure and created a mean yearly debt increase based on how long the liberals were in power. and then compared it with similar numbers for previous governments as this would be the only way to create an actual comparable situation.

In any event it doesn't really matter who is power in Quebec, so long as regulations aren't changed to make Quebec a more appealing market for investors and so long as civil service remains as bloated as it is now, Quebec will always generate a debt.

Now, I'm quite interested in this strategy you think that debt generation could be a part of, is it the evil strategy of having functional utilities, and overpasses that aren't falling down, or is it something much more insidious?

    16. "Les racistes sont ceux qui refusent de parler la langue de leur terre d'accueil"

By "parler", you can't mean mean "d'etre capable de parler", since that would not be factually correct. You must mean speaking French as a first option, first resort, preferably with our accent, and not as an alternative to another language or even two other languages, and as a last resort.

Or maybe "speaking" is a euphemism for something else, for some sort of ideological conformity to the existing system. If the racists are those who reject the ideals of this society, then if I cringe in disgust at the latest QC government's ad running on tv these days that puts abortion as a number one value of this society, that makes me a "racist" for rejecting the "values" of my "terre d'accueil". Which would also mean that a command of French means nothing is the mind still wanders in forbidden directions.

I wonder if this is why people like him have to savage the French spoken/written by anyone who has an unorthodox opinion. "No life in Quebec without French" was such a nice euphemism for "No life in QC if you don't think the right way". 35 years ago, with Ethnics and Anglos not too versed in French, the euphemism could have been applied freely. Not so much today. So to resurrect the euphemism, you have to shut down your ideological enemy's French in order for the euphemism to hold. Saying "Get out if you don't agree with the foundations of our society" would sound too extreme, but that is exactly what this "battle" is about today. It isn't about speaking French for sure, it's much more about conformity to the status quo.

Renee, You're a breath of fresh air amongst us. I have reiterated here several times, the simplest way out of the mess is get rid of the PQ simply by reelecting the Liberals. Will bringing in another party to split the vote do that? First, the Liberal party is not immoral. Nothing has been found against any politician in the party. Second, the Libs never acted on English because no one asked them to. The English media kept everyone thinking we were satisfied with the situation. In the next election we must let the Liberal members know that we will support them if they work for Anglo rights. The Libs lost because a died in the wool sepratist hid behind Mr.Clean (Ducheneau) and made like the second coming. If we direct our votes and support to the party that has held Quebec together since the PQ hatched out of the brain of a bloody minded little egoist we can climb out of the hole. The Libs under Jean Charest were the main thing that kept us in Canada during the last referendumb. They have walked a tight rope between French and English for thirty years. When people say they took us for granted, What did we do to them? We took it for granted that they would keep us in canada and they did. We naturally voted Lib because they were our best hope. Well they still are! This time try working with them instead of voting and then sitting back to watch the results. Be part of them.
As for Mark Bergeron, he should join the Liberal Party and run for leader. he would have all the English votes. Ed

    1. I'm gonna try one more time Ed - they will have no reason to change their way of conducting their affairs in quebec without some competition and the Equality Party 2.0 will give them some competition. If they strategically run candidates in only certain areas in quebec, they will not split the vote enough for the PQ to get back into power. They know what they are doing and they did it before and the PQ was not able to come up the middle. If we have only one federalist party, they know we will vote for them no matter what and will not change anything they did or currently do. They need competition to get their asses moving to change things and this will not happen, no matter how much pressure we put on them, because they don't have to! My liberal MNA finally sent me a return e-mail from about 2 months ago (been so long I'm not even sure which one she responded to and her assistant didn't even have the courtesy to quote me a date of my e-mail, (I sent about 3)) and all the message did was give me an e-mail address in Montreal to which I am supposed to "ask my questions of them". I will copy from my e-mail and post so all can see the weak-kneed response which gives me an idea of where this new liberal party is going. Sorry Ed - lost all my faith in them.

We thank you for taking the time to express your concern for the Quebec Liberal party and its current state.

To better assist you in your search for answers, we will forward you to the

    Parti Liberal Quebec (PLQ)

    Montréal's office

    7240, rue Waverly
    Montréal (Québec) H2R 2Y8

    Telephone (Toll free) : 1 800 361-1047

Not even the courtesy of an e-mail address but perhaps I will call them today and see what the hell is going on. My MNA should have been able to answer whether or not the party is considering changing over to a separatist party without referring me to a Montreal telephone number. He hesitated and then stated "no, I haven't heard that". That's it, that's all. I didn't feel at all comfortable with the response - It should have been something like "No way in hell" or something stronger. Anyway, it might be worthwhile for a francophone to call and see what reception they get when asking the same sort of question. I would be interested to hear what response they get.

    4. I think it's sad that some Quebecers like S.R. are so insecure that they need to white wash English out of our province to feel better.

      I get that they've been sold the revisionist history from the separatists that French existed here long before any language (even the French were surprised when they showed up and all the native Americans were speaking French already);

      That British imperialists attacked the Quebec settlers for no reason (not that two huge imperialist countries France and England were at war over their holdings and France happened to lose);

      that it was all anglos that were stepping on the Freedoms of all French Canadians (not just upper class anglos, the seigneurs and the roman catholic clergy stepping on both lower class anglos and francos, which started the first rebellion);

      that the brave and honorable partie Patriotes was entirely composed of Francophones (not a mix of both French and English leaders);

that it was some sort of insidious plan by Anglos and immigrants to modernize while preventing francophones from doing so (not the Roman catholic church encouraging French Canadians to retain a simple rural way of life)

that the French language is on the decline and barely exists in Quebec (not that it did just fine the past 250 years without legislation and is probably at it's highest prevalence ever)

that Quebec has a completely distinct culture (not that we we are much more alike than different all pretty much watch the same terrible movies and shows they're just dubbed here)

I get all that, but its still sad to think that someone thinks a name is aggressive because it is in English.

Lookit - deterioration of English language services to those who speak English has deteriorated under the tutelage of the Liberals. They have done sweet f***-all to reverse the tide.

To me, it doesn't make one iota of difference if at long last the Liberals are coming out of the closet. Even Thomas Mulcair has done so!! Then again, Thomas Mulcair would sell his mother's soul to the devil and rob her blind for votes. I don't trust that sonofabitch as far as I can spit!

      Delete
    8. I sure have to agree about Mulcair except his stance on the Clarity Act has screwed him but good except perhaps for some ridings in quebec. I'm glad because I would never want the NDP in charge of the federal government in my lifetime. Way too socialist and union oriented for me. That's what I've been trying to explain to Ed about the liberals - they are a waste of our vote except that they don't threaten to hold a referendum - everything else that has been done to the anglophone community has been either initiated by them or backed up by them. They never stand up for Canada in the National Assembly nor through the media. We have to give the Equality Party 2.0 our support or we have no chance at all of ever improving anything in this Godforsaken place. If enough francophones catch onto the fact that their representatives are pushing us to civil war, perhaps they will make an about face = if not, we will hit rock bottom soon enough and it will become evident to them quickly. The introduction of Bill 14 is what woke a lot of federalists up because it's now very clear that they will not cease and desist until they have started real trouble. I guess we needed that shake = I did because up until then I figured if it made the francophones feel better about themselves, then I could live with it (Bill 101 that is). Now it's outright ethnic cleansing and all out war on the anglophone and allophone communities and we have to fight back starting with regaining all the rights and freedoms we're legitimately entitled to as residents of Canada. We also have to have faith that our francophone friends are reading and writing about the same entitlements - after all we lived side by side for hundreds of years with no problems.

    9. The other thing that has made me very suspicious of the liberals is that I sent that e-mail to my MNA (about whether or not they were discussing turning the party into a separatist option), probably around two months ago, and yet I only get a response this week? Plus, if this was not being discussed, why did she not reply with something like "oh my goodness No - we are firmly a federalist party" instead of referring me to a phone number in Montreal to call and ask about the status of the party. Pretty fishy to me anyway. Something must have been going on and we are just not privy to it. The NDP, when discussing establishing a provincial party, had a whole bunch of them wanting to be a separatist party for God's sake. We definitely need a provincial Canadian party that we can trust to have our best interests at heart - one that is willing to extol the virtues of being Canadian as well as abiding by Canadian law and the Canadian Constitution. Other than that, there will not be a country of Canada as we know it in about 50 years. People have to be made aware of the pitfalls of leaving Canada and not one politician here in quebec has the guts to talk about it. Shameful.

The guy on the phone was probably saying to himself, "What the hell is she on?" The Liberals spent 30 years proving they are a federalist party, you hear one silly thing and label them separatists. 1. Ed - there was a link a few months back provided by one of our contributors that told of the liberals discussing becoming a separatist party and that is why I sent the e-mail to my MNA in the first place. All I'm doing is showing you the response I received from that original e-mail. If it was not being discussed, why didn't my MNA just say so in her response, but no, she referred me to the HQ of the liberal party. Doesn't that give anyone pause for thought? And as for the drug instructions, if you had followed the link provided to that one, it was in one of the newspapers about the language police harassing the pharmacist to pass out instructions in french only. The links supplied for the above information were both from reputable sources and not from IF, SSJB or Vigil net therefore these things are worth following up. Exactly how are they proving they are a federal party? They say they are, sometimes, like right now during a leadership convention, but when it comes down to saying anything at all that's good about being a part of Canada, they fail miserably and continuously. You insist on giving them far more credit than they deserve for the way they have treated the federalists that reside here, They have never once have defended our rights any more than any of the other parties. And it was two referendums and of course they led the fight; who else would have done it? They are supposedly a federal party. Mr. Charest (and I liked him as a man and a politician) did not come here to lead the liberal party of his own free will - he was literally forced into it and was then pressured to become a liberal and the leader of the party. The public (all over Canada) made a hero of him and demanded that he turn from a conservative to a liberal following the last referendum. You keep saying that they thought we, as federalists, were happy - if anyone of them picked up a paper, read their correspondence, listened to people on the street, they would have known about the ethnic cleansing taking place and taken some kind of action to stop it over the last 9 years but they didn't. I'll be really happy to see a forthright federal/Canadian party emerge so that we can have a choice for the first time in years and perhaps the liberals will get a wake up call and smarten up.

I do know that these reports came from reputable sources because I checked the links on the posts at the time. I am not blowing things out of proportion to upset anyone - simply passing along information for everyone - you are as brainwashed on the liberals as the seppies are on the PQ for heaven's sake. Having another provincial federalist party is good for democracy and will strengthen our choices in this place. The liberals STABBED US IN THE BACK MANY TIMES and you refuse to accept this as a fact. There was lots of information out there about the screwing we were getting in this place and THEY DID NOTHING. Didn't even acknowledge that there was/is ethnic cleansing taking place - not one word. And even in today's Gazette one of the candidates would not answer questions on what he was going to do to assist the anglophone community. You are the only one of this blog that insists that the liberals are our greatest hope - we will only have hope if we get someone with some guts in charge of the party and I've yet to hear any one of them say that they are willing to assist in regaining our rights and freedoms. So where does this place us? They get back into power and things remain as they are except for the slow removal of more rights and freedoms because they offer nothing else.

Wasn't it some French speaking guy about 50 years ago that said the government has no place in the nation's bedrooms?

I think with Beaudoin, it was Bill 40. Howard Galganov, in the documentary Angryphones, described it as language police being able to invade your business, or home if your business office is there between 7am and 7pm without warning, looking for "illegal English".

there's a difference between two employees communicating together, in which case bill 101 doesn't apply, and an "association of employees" releasing info to interested people, where bill 101 does apply. obviously, this is true, as you know, in companies of a hundred employees or more.

sue from hr can even reply in tagalog to mark if she wants. but when she sends out the new hiring policy to all employees, it has to include a french version so gaetan doesn't feel like he's in manitoba.

And how is it possible that you are unaware that the PQ has indeed been recently trying to control how two anglophones communicate with one another, regardless of what Bill 101 says?

And not for a company of more than a hundred but a company more than 10?

And what makes you think people are against including French but rather against trying to erase all traces of English from Quebec?

"...while it’s OK for Mark to feel like he’s in Ste. Tite when he’s in Montreal?"

i never wrote it would be ok for mark to feel like he's in st-tite when he's in montreal. and i don't think receiving info in french and english from an association of employees will make him feel that way.

"And how is it possible that you are unaware that the PQ has indeed been recently trying to control how two anglophones communicate with one another, regardless of what Bill 101 says?"

dunno. i missed that one. please inform me.

"And not for a company of more than a hundred but a company more than 10?"

correct me if i'm wrong, but it was proposed to impose the gradual "francisation" process to smaller companies, not full bill 101 enforcement. there is a difference, mate. can you appreciate it?

"And what makes you think people are against including French but rather against trying to erase all traces of English from Quebec?"

i don't understand the question, can you re-phrase?

"I’m going to need several well-documented examples of your claims including backup documentation of your backup documentation."

i don't recall claiming anything except that bill 101 can't be used to force two anglophones to speak french together. backup documentation is bill 101.

"And be advised that whatever documentation you do manage to scrounge up will be insufficient anyway."

    haha! very funny, mate.

  30. That's what I'm fighting for Land - my rights and freedoms to live in the language I choose; not one that I'm forced to - one of the official languages of Canada - if the Equality Party 2.0 gets off the ground before the next provincial election, I'm voting for them - if they do not I will have no choice but to vote liberal again. Hope I get a choice next time - would be nice after 15 or 20 years of having no other choice.

  32. ‘Moi je n'ai rien à dire contre deux anglos qui discutent entre eux et même publiquement. Toute la question de l'affichage en lettres géantes de noms de commerces en anglais repose sur la symbolique. Vous devez savoir que les symboles peuvent avoir des significations différentes selon la culture’

Give me a breakkkkkkkkkk…this has nothing to do with “Culture” or “La symbolique” OMG WHAT AN UTTER LIE! It has everything to do with the fact that you can’t stand to see ‘ENGLISH’ anywhere. Be honest and tell the truth for once in your bloody bleak existence: You cannot stand to have any contact whatsoever with ENGLISH anytime, anywhere. LA FIN!

You hang around here because you fear that every single day, Anglos & Allos may be conspiring something against you and the freaks you support. You live in utter terror of this. You dread a conspiracy and according to you, you MUST monitor it, so that you can then run to your friends over at virgil or IF and forewarn them.

    You are such a LOSER!

  39. I think it is great that the a new non-francophone centric party is being launched. The Quebec liberals have done jack-shit for the non-francophone communities (Anglophones and Allophones) for far too long. The Liberals are, in my opinion more guilty of practicing ethnic politics than the PQ because we all know what the PQ are all about, the Liberals did it because they wanted Francophone votes in the regions. The Liberals knew it was wrong but did it anyway! I've said it in the past, on this very blog, that in a minority situation either the PQ or the Liberals will do ANYTHING for power. I speculate that given another PQ minority Pauline Marois (or another leader) would strike a deal with a new Equality party and use the situation to tell their members that another referendum is (yet again) not in the cards.

That said, any new version of the Equality party should not look like the Angryphone malcontents of the past. The new party needs to have solid realistic policies that help unite Quebecers rather than pit them against each other. My two cents...
