PQ patronage appointee not up to the job

"I have a lot of confidence in Nicolas Girard's abilities," Transport Minister Sylvain Gaudreault said. Link{Fr}

"How many chief executives does Montreal’s commuter-train authority have?
The Agence métropolitaine de transport says it has just one: Nicolas Girard, a former Parti Québécois MNA named to the post after he lost his seat in September’s election.
But when it looks at the AMT’s upper echelons, the opposition Coalition Avenir Québec sees two: Girard, plus Paul Côté, a veteran Via Rail executive whom Girard replaced.
When Girard took over in October, he kept Côté on as a “special adviser.”
“By paying two CEOs at the AMT simply to reward a friend of the PQ regime, the government of Premier Pauline Marois goes farther than the Liberals in the field of patronage,” CAQ transport critic Éric Caire said Monday." Read the rest of the story    Alternate Link

Double-dipping PQ Minister shamed into renouncing 2nd paycheck

It  seems that PQ minister Jean-François Lisée was collecting two big fat paychecks at once, all of course on the back of Quebec taxpayers, that is until the public disclosure shamed him into renouncing his second paycheck.

Mr. Lisée is being paid about $165,000 as a minister in the new PQ government, but is also collecting a $100,000 salary from the University of Montreal in a convoluted deal that sees him getting paid after he left the job.  The payment was part of an avoidance scheme. It seems that the university couldn't pay Lisée as much as he demanded because of salary rules, so agreed to pay him a 'thirteenth' month each year, to be paid at the end of his employment (or something to that effect) The whole scheme sounds about as kosher as a ham sandwich Link

PQ lowers level for bilingual status for towns to 40%

"It’s no longer 50 per cent, but 40 per cent — and even then, it’s not automatic. Quebec’s minister responsible for the anglophone community, Jean-François Lisée, said he has convinced his cabinet colleagues of the need to soften the rules under which a municipality loses its official bilingual status under the Charter of the French Language.
“I argued with others that it should not be at 50 (per cent),” Lisée said following a speech to the Jeune chambré de commerce de Montréal on Monday.
“It should be at 40. I felt it was important to make it rather difficult to take away the status, which is worth a lot.” Link

OQLF harassment..What is Chunky-monkey in French?

"Off duty, an OQLF officer waits in line on a busy afternoon in the summer. When he orders, he also points out that the bilingual chalkboard menu should be displayed in French.

I politely mention that while there is English, the exact same menu and prices are displayed in significantly larger and bolder characters in French right next to it.

The off duty officer begins to raise his voice, mentioning that the law requires 100% of our displays to be in French. While making a scene in front of other customers, he storms out of the store, threatening us that we will be hearing from the OQLF.

Approximately a week later, we receive a letter from the OQLF stating that they suspect us of breaching the “Charte de la langue française”, and that they will be sending over an officer shortly.

Quebec Corruption watch... this week

On Wednesday 140 police officers carried out 44 search warrants in relation to phoney billing scams, a practice whereby construction companies use fictitious invoices to defraud the tax department. Link

There was some clarification this week about a story about disgraced ex-mayor of Laval Gilles Vaillancourt whose cousin was reported to have tried to flush money down the toilet.
It is now reported that Francine, the wife of the ex-mayor brought a shoebox of money over to Ginette Vaillancourt's adjacent swanky condo for safe-keeping.
When police arrived at the apartment building to conduct a raid on Gilles Vaillancourt's home, the cousin panicked when she saw all the police cars and tried to flush the $20,000 down the toilet. Link
You might recall that when police raided two safety boxes belonging to the ex-mayor, they discovered over $100,000 in cash!
An investigative television show reported that the Mayor shipped money to Switzerland via a friendly banker in the Caribbean. The show also reported that corruption has been rampant in Laval for decades. Link

On Thursday, police raided offices of the new mayor of Laval, Alexandre Duplessis who is a crony of the ex-mayor. The raids are in relation to the skyrocketing cost of the yet to be built hockey arena that the city is supposed to build for the farm team of the Montreal Canadiens, now playing in Hamilton. "Three former high-ranking Quebec police officers are the subjects of an investigation into allegations of criminal activity.
The investigation involves former Quebec provincial police director Richard Deschênes, as well as Jean Audette and Steven Chabot, who were responsible for criminal investigations for the Sûreté du Québec.
Chabot is retired, but Deschênes and Audette were both relieved of their duties when provincial police head Mario Laprise alerted Public Security Minister Stéphane Bergeron.
Bergeron told a news conference Wednesday that the allegations came to light when Laprise was doing a routine check of the accounting books, and discovered some unaccounted for money." Link
For Deschênes, it's been a mighty fall.
He was fired as Chief of the provincial police force a month after the PQ took power with many in the media alleging that it was payback for the Keystone Kops misadventure at the Club Metropolis where during an attempt on Pauline Marois' life, the police utterly botched the security detail. Deschênes had two years left on his contract and so was humiliatingly demoted to finish out his term. Now he's suspended pending the outcome of the investigation. More payback?

It seems that after finally coming on board and supporting the Charbonneau Commission, the QFL,  Quebec's largest union, has gotten a case of  cold feet.
Largely involved in the construction industry, it seems that the revelations at the commission looking into corruption in that industry is hitting the union too close to home.
"The Charbonneau commission is meeting some resistance on the part of the Federation of Labour (QFL), its affiliate, the FTQ-Construction and the Solidarity Fund, in collaboration with the investigation concerning them, learned Le Devoir.

According to reports, the investigators Committee has met resistance and a lack of volunteers who could explain situations that raise doubt, especially with regard to the possible infiltration of organized crime. So far, more than six people have received a summons to appear before the commission Charbonneau in the coming months."

PQ calls on citizens to rat out English

"The Parti Québécois government is calling on all citizens to act as “sentries” in defence of the French language, sniffing out businesses that fail to respect a newly enshrined right to live and work in French.
As she tabled the PQ’s “new Bill 101” Wednesday, Diane De Courcy, the minister responsible for the French Language Charter, acknowledged the government does not have the resources to enforce the law adequately.
When an immigrant convenience-store owner is unable to serve customers in French or an employer unjustifiably requires a worker to speak English, it is up to people to complain to authorities, she said. Read the rest of the story

Montreal lags badly in tall buildings

A report published by the Council of Tall buildings and Urban Habitat shows just how badly Montreal is falling behind other cities in Canada. Montreal has now fallen to third place behind Calgary, which has twice as many tall buildings.

Click on diagram to enlarge
One of the most telling facts is the average age of these tall buildings. In Montreal, the average age of the city's skyscrapers is 36 years old, while in Toronto, it is only 16 years and in Calgary it is only 19 years.
At present Toronto has15 skyscrapers under construction, the most of any city in the world!
How many are under construction in Montreal? ..... zero.
This will mean  that Toronto will have 45 skyscrapers to Montreal's seven by 2015.
Draw your own conclusions.

Montreal has placed only one building in the top ten highest buildings in Canada and that building is in tenth place.

"The more time francophones spend with their anglophone neighbours, the less they worry about losing their first language, says a new survey.
The surprising finding, which seems to contradict the notion that francophones living in urban areas like Montreal are concerned about the increasing use of English in their midst, was revealed in a poll conducted by Léger Marketing for the Association for Canadian Studies." Read the story

A few days back, in the comment section, one of our prolific commenters "ED" said this;
"When a lie is told over and over it becomes reality in the minds of honest men. people say it must be true, I've heard it before. Unfortunately it is still a lie."

Here below is a perfect example of how a lie can snowball. You  might remember last week, I posted a subtitled video of an interview with Quebec's Resource minister who told a Radio-Canada interviewer that Canadian taxpayers were on the hook for 900 million for a loan guarantee for Newfoundland's new electricity project in Labrador. The interviewer tried to correct the minister by pointing out that Ottawa wasn't spending anything, just guaranteeing a loan.

That lie has now gone mainstream. In an article in a Quebec City newspaper, Le Soleil, this paragraph led a story about Quebec's betrayal by Ottawa.
"Ottawa has decided to create another precedent, this time in the field of hydro-electric development, announcing a financial contribution of more than one billion dollars in support of the 514,000 citizens of Newfoundland, the shareholders of the company State Energy Narco." Link
The writer goes on to say that this $900 million financial contribution to half a million Newfoundlanders would be the equivalent of $15 billion to Quebec's 8 million residents.
And that is how a lie can grow....

But I'm not surprised that the newspaper printed such utter rubbish.  I guess any newspaper that allows the hilarious gaffe of  "Narco" instead of Nalcor" isn't much on fact-checking!

At least some La Presse reporters get their facts straight. Link{Fr}

*****************
It seems that Prime Minister Harper has taken an example from Madame Marois and humbly admitted a gaffe;
"It was wrong to appoint an auditor general who is not bilingual, Prime Minister Stephen Harper now reportedly admits. According to Montreal newspaper La Presse, the prime minister told his Conservative caucus last week he made a mistake last year when he appointed the English-speaking Michael Ferguson to the job, and indicated the government would support the NDP's bill requiring officers of Parliament to be bilingual before their appointment. Link
In the article cited above, the Toronto based website ran a poll of its readers asking;

"Do you think the auditor general should be bilingual"

At the time I researched this article, almost two to one said that the auditor general didn't have to be bilingual....Hmmm.  Link
The results didn't surprise me much, but one thing that I found curious is that 2% of readers who responded, clicked the "I don't know" button.
The question is, what kind of idiot responds to a voluntary online poll to register no opinion?

Spendthrift Minister
The Minister of Cultural Affairs Maka Kotto is in hot water for wasting taxpayer money by flying  22  cultural representatives attached to Quebec government’s delegations around the world, for what was basically a 'meet and greet.'
“It was false to report that my Ministry paid $64,000 for the meeting. It cost about $39,000 and the money didn’t come out of other programs,” Mr. Kotto said. However he failed to mention that the amount paid by his department didn’t include travel costs paid for by the Ministry of International Affairs....
“At a time when this government is asking all ministries to cut costs, the only good thing they can think of doing is to bring-in cultural delegates from abroad, pay their hotel rooms, pay their meals only to tell them that their budgets are being cut,” said Liberal critic for economic development."  Link

  1. Lisée only came clean because he was exposed by the media… what a great job by the PQ, who pretends to be so ultra-clean compared to the Liberals! It may not have been strictly illegal but for a government who not only rejected funding already-starved educational institutions by eliminating long-overdue tuition increases but actually damaged the quality of our educational institutions by REDUCING their financing… and then having a PQ minister claiming a salary of $104,000 from said underfunded universities is so galling enough… but then having him trying to claim the high road by donating his undeserved salary to charity (NOTE: not by stopping his double-dipping and getting to claim a tax credit… KA-CHING!!!). Does anyone recall ever having seen a more hypocritical, flip-flopping government in their first 100 days than the one we unfortunately have now????

  2. Genuine respect for minorities is exemplified by Finland, where a threshold of 5% Swedish-speaking minority warrants official respect for their community.

Lisée playing good cop/bad cop with his 40% threshold (as opposed to the PQ's 50%) is balderdash. He is the furthest thing from respecting Quebec’s minorities that we’ve ever had.

    3. "La Finland n'est pas seule au milieu d'une mer de 350 000 000 d'anglophones."

350 million English speakers can spell assimilation, especially given the history of assimilation of North American francophones into the faceless English-speaking majority.

350 million English speakers also means that all these people are your neighbors, and if you don't learn their language, you limit yourself severely, much more than someone who doesn't speak French in Quebec.

Moreover, the language of the 350 million people who surround you is the lingua franca that gives you access to the rest of the world (that was my reason for learning English, and not the desire to mingle with the Montreal English community by any means).

Add to that some skepticism about what those who rule over you say: do they really want to protect you from assimilation? Or do they have more selfish reasons, like maintaining a captive tax base? Or both maybe? (One does not necessarily preclude the other)

So the reality is complex and you will have to balance things out and make your own decision. Note that that your self-appointed betterers from the PQ, the "guardians" of the French language in QC, have made their decision that is different from yours. Their decision was to learn English and make sure their children learn it as well. Sometimes in private English schools.

    5. "L'idée est de maîtriser l'anglais comme outil de communication et non d'assimilation"

This is just an empty statement and actions speak louder than words anyways. The PQ will say it, but will act in the opposite direction, putting roadblocks on any student who would like to master English. Recently, there was this letter from the teacher's association . The teachers don't want too much English instruction for protectionist reasons. The PQ doesn't want it for control reasons. The francophone media don't want it for the fear of losing audiences, so they spin in favor of stronger 101, even lying to justify over-interpretations of 101, like the requirement for descriptors which is not in the law. Institutional interests are in the way of people's interests. 60% of Quebeckers don't speak English, some because they are indoctrinated into acting against their own personal interests, and some because they were not given institutional help or encouragement.

There is also the societal level. "Protection of French" stands for more than just supporting local folk bands, or supporting local farmers. It also fosters a snitch-culture, a mistrust culture, a surveillance culture. Read the article on the raid of Ben and Jerry. It's Orwellian.

Do you think it is worth to sacrifice liberal culture on the altar of "protecting" French? I don't.

    6. S.R.:

I don't think there is anyone on this forum that would begrudge you or any francophone from doing what you want to do to preserve and promote the French language and culture in Quebec.

What we begrudge you is to do it using the levers of the state, either in the form of prejudicial laws or tax-payer money. Governments can't legislate for one ethnic group's culture or language because, you see, that's discrimination based upon language which is a prohibited base of discrimination.

But forget the illegality; relying upon government to do the job also happens to be a lousy way to do it. Legislating "protections" gives the false impression that all you have to do is pass a law and the thing will get done, resulting in a passive populace. Proactively protecting your language as free individuals outside the control of government is the way to go (just like all other ethnic and linguistic groups).

Example: instead of relying upon a law requiring French on signs, all you have to do is withhold your consumer dollar from a store owner if he doesn't have French on his signs. If enough francophones will do that, the store owner will change his sign faster than you can say "Camil Laurin".

The marketplace is better to preserve and protect French than the National Assembly.

  6. The PQ, and Quebec for that matter is a totalitarian state. Telling citizens to rat out their neighbours for breathing in English leads to paranoia and fear, the two biggest ingredients in a racist society.

We used to joke about the old Soviet Union bugging every room in the country listening for betrayal of the government. You couldn't trust your neighbour who may rat on you for being a political subversive - even if it was not true.

A complaint to the OQLF is already working to make the targets guilty until proven innocent. If this is what Quebec wants, then it is the rest of us who should throw Quebec out of Canada for their lack of democracy. How Nazi of the government to operate this way! 1. Ed, glad I could give you a good laugh. You're coming around to my comparing what Quebec is doing as tantamount to what the Nazis did. It's a step-by-step process. The Nazis didn't get elected one day and kill millions of Jews, Gypsies and others the next, there was a process that led to this starting with laws and decrees, then actions like forcing Jews to wear conspicuous labels on their clothing (Jewish stars), forcing their enemies to manually clean the streets, destroying property (Kristallnacht), isolation (the Warsaw Ghetto), and ultimately, genocide (the Final Solution).

As you can see, the PQ is getting language into a frenzy, and language is still being used as the decoy for what's really happening: an imposed predominantly white, French, Roman Catholic state. Left unchecked, this is the direction Quebec is heading. It's only a question of how far it will go. The more the minorities remain complacent, the more the PQ will test the limits.

And you are right, I use english words that regular anglos would not use, I do so because my native language is french. So some words seem obvious to me, for instance cecity which is the translation of cécité, which is obscure to most anglos who will use blindness. In the same way, some of my sentences are constructed according to the french logic which might give an exotic flavor to my english writing style.

This being said, if the way I write in english offends you, honestly, I don't care. And if you don't like to way I write in english, brace yourself, the overwhelming majority of english speakers in the world are not native english speakers so there will be millions like me writing in very creative and very exotic and very not british englishes.

We bring in Haitians and, because they speak french, they are more acceptable to the separatists than the anglophones, which is ridiculous because, other than language, we have a lot more in common in culture with each other, than the Haitians do with the francophones. Nothing against the Haitians, of course, just the cultural differences such as holidays, religion, on and on.

    11. I agree with Cutie. Though there are divisions, there is a great value in co-inhabiting as a bilingual community. I was on a train to the suburbs not too long ago, and there were 6 girls in my train car, probably 16 or 17 yrs old heading home from school, and they were having a conversation. They would seamlessly weave out from English to French and vice versa, it was truly something amazing to behold. They spoke both perfectly, to the point where you couldn’t tell if they were Francophone or Anglophone, although very clearly, they were both. This is special and unique and can only happen here in Quebec, specifically, in Montreal. It is so clear and simple that this is the way it should be, and were we truly unique in this Country, this should be happening throughout the entire country. This is what we should be aspiring to; it is the path to the Future and true opportunity. Why wouldn’t anyone want to seize this for themselves, seize the advantages that come with being bilingual. Understand that no one language is more important or vital than the other. Bilingualism is not the path to the demise of any language, it is the the path to prosperous careers and fulfilling lives.

“Or do they have more selfish reasons, like maintaining a captive tax base? Or both maybe?”.

Right on Adski. I keep saying that the reasons the seppies push so hard is cause they have an ulterior motive and a hidden agenda. There is an insurmountable debt and an aging population that someone has to pay for. It’s become dire now. They are caging their young on purpose; selling this load of crap to Quebecers, this principle of protecting a language, and brainwashing them in the process, all the while, shooting them in the foot, in the end. This is just vile and it’s a lie. Wanna know the real truth about something, look for whatever leads to the $$$$$$$$.

    12. Couldn't agree more. Instead of preaching that bilingualism is a good thing (which it is) they threaten that they will lose their culture - BS of course but the SRs, YRs and Michel's fall for it like bees to nectar. Was saying that to my friend today when we went shopping - I wish I was totally bilingual, I would have the world by the tail. English people are proud to be bilingual while a lot of French seem to be brainwashed that it's to their detriment. Silly, silly people. When I was working, I couldn't even be promoted to at least 80% of the positions in the public service because I hadn't mastered French. Don't think I didn't regret learning it in my younger years but did ensure my kids are bilingual. All my French friends wanted to learn English so they spoke to me in English. Looking back I wish I would have insisted they speak to me in French because in the end I was the loser, not them.

  12. "how badly Montreal is falling behind other cities in Canada. Montreal has now fallen to third place behind Calgary"

When I first arrived in Mtl, by late-night train, I was stunned to discover that the paltry skyline we cud see was, in fact, the much-vaunted "jewel" of cities. it was the last thing I saw when folding & hitting the road to Toronto via the same train. I still am surprised each year when I visit and see the city.

I'm not slagging Montreal, but I am slagging the separatists for destroying a once-great (and no longer even remotely great) city.

You montrealais, I know, delight in coddling ur insecurities in peering down ur noses at the other Canadian cities and disdaining their "culture" (airquotes are yours, not mine), but the fact is Toronto is surprisingly abundant in culture. So was Vancouver. We hear often about Calgary's cultural aspirations and I bet they will achieve them. It's not difficult to envision a Montreal in 100 or even 30 years which lags behind the CTV cities as 4th in culture, and which still boasts 7 skyscrapers.

One example:"Les cerises de la terre... elles poussent seulement au Quebec!". Umm, no, they grow all over Laurentia, in "Canada" and the "US", on which Quebec sits. I heard really naive, uneducated, deluded affirmations all the time, and I cud tell that the ignorant nationalism (probably a product of Michel's much-vaunted public school system) wud drive me nuts. So I left, and discovered cosmopolitan, non-nationalist Toronto, where anyone of any background is a Torontonian whether they were born here or just arrived yesterday. I'm glad I switched cities. Tony K: Any discussions re Howard Galganov now have to be in the past tense. The man is very much alive, but in his blog, he speaks very little of Quebec anymore as he prefers to write diatribes about Barak Obama. This is because, first of all, he feels Americans use the social media more effectively and put it into action better than Canadians. Secondly, and even more importantly, the Americans donate much more to his blog than Canadians do. H.G., like me, has reached his point of indifference re Quebec, much like I have. Neither he nor I any longer give a tinker's damn whether Quebec separates or not; in fact, we both want it, and Howard has written me directly stating that as I occasionally comment on certain editorials he places in his blog.

Cutie: I finally responded to Ed Brown above re the laugh I gave him late one night. The more passive the minority population in Quebec remains, the more the PQ and the other Quebec political parties for that matter will test the limits.

H.G. left, I left and so did several hundreds of thousands of the minority population. The battle is now yours, so fight or leave. As [the last leader of the Reform Party] Keith Henderson stated on the 60 Minutes segment back in 1998, people leave because they have real lives to lead, a living to earn and don't want to be bothered and bogged down by fights over language, so they leave.

Sadly, it looks as if the fight from the RoC Editor was crying for is now in vain and has passed you by because of decades and decades of complacency. As I wrote above, the fight is now yours. I'm doing what I can by writing the FPA and American shows like Dateline NBC, 20/20, etc., but the rest of you are going to have to get the American media involved to have a real chance of getting Quebec to do something. Get busy, fellow readers who remain in Quebec! It's do or die now!

    8. Mr. Sauga,

I agree that Howard's main emphasis over the past year has been Obama who he sees as a complete disaster. But Howard has also just come off that bilingual signs case that the Supreme Court of Canada rejected, that is, they refused to hear it. Howard is going to have a lot to say about that.

I personally think it is incredible that he took the time, effort, and money to fight what is a losing but such a necessary battle. And he will get little appreciation because of it.

The Supreme Court of Canada is a blotch on the whole concept of individual rights. Their 1988 Ford decision -- which is responsible for both the silly law that Howard fought against AND the Court's refusal to hear his case -- is an example of politically-correct bullshit that both attempted to appease Quebec nationalism and a decision not to follow the rule of law. The Ford case, as far as I'm concerned represents one of the nails in the coffin of the nation of Canada. Another huge nail is their Gosselin (Tutor) decision of 2005 in which the Court effectively institutionalized and sanctioned segregation for Canada.

The country owes a debt of gratitude to Howard, one he'll never receive. Indeed, he'll instead get snickers and put-downs.

    9. Tony: No, H.G. this anti-Obama obsession has been going on into its fifth year now. He was bashing the O man since he was campaigning his first time around. Don't get me wrong, I applaud his efforts, but what is the most disappointing chapter of it all is that the English media is just as big a detractor as the French media is.

This is the raison d'être (please pardon the pun) I left. Long before H.G. got into political activism, I could see my parents, the leading generation when this all started, were going to do nothing. They bitched a lot, they said we should stay and fight, but nobody did so I figured very quickly that with little resistance, the government was going to push the envelope, and sure enough, that's exactly what started to happen and now it's getting worse than ever. It took longer than I thought it would to reach this point, but it has, and heaven knows how much more they'll push the envelope, and I encourage our truly loyal and constructive contributors to this blog write favourably and positively to Howard's blog for his efforts.

Too, Tony, you're absolutely right that H.G. sacrificed a lot of time, energy and resources into this project, and he'll never get any thanks for it. I'm hoping he'll keep his promise and post his response to the Supreme Court mighty soon. I was hoping he would have posted it this weekend, but he got preoccupied with the Newtown massacre, so we'll just have to be patient. Unfortunately, he turned this horrible incident into an anti-leftist diatribe which nauseates me to no end, I'm hoping he will write about the promised response shortly.

The American system was set up so that one man will NOT have "all the say" and that, instead, a system of "checks and balances" is in place. The current debate over the so-called fiscal cliff is an example that it is the OPPOSITE of what you claim, Ed.

Despite winning the election, Obama is hard-pressed to impose his desire to raise the top income tax bracket of 35% to 39.6%. Why? Because the House of Representatives, at the same time as Obama was voted in, got a majority of Republican Congressmen and they are apparently opposed to this. So there is debate and a give-and-take over the issue. It is NOT clear which side will prevail; if it were as you stated, Ed, the president would have already gotten his way.

As for Bush's madness, do I assume correctly that you are referring to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan? If so, Bush did not go to war in Iraq without first getting a resolution passed by Congress and -- without looking it up on Wikipedia -- I believe almost all Democrats in both Houses voted in the affirmative...AND all senators and congressmen had access to the same intelligence as Bush had. Even Senator Kerry, who had voted against going to war against Iraq in the first gulf war under Bush 41 -- voted for it this time around.

And as for Afghanistan, well, that was a no-brainer. Even Obama was for it and he himself ran on continuing the war (actually escalating it) when he ran in '08.

The power of the presidency is so overwhelming no one wants to oppose it. Sorry Tony, it only came out tyears later that the info wasfraudulent and the FBI said Bush knew this. Bush wanted to be able tosay that he had been a war time president. He
thought he could do it in a few weeks like Reagan did in Greneda but his handling of the troops was so inept he turned it into something that would have made Custer look good by comparison. Which law was Obama going by when he murdered those American citizens by drones? I'm not passing judgement on whether this was a good or bad thing, but virtually everyone agrees that it was done outside the law and that Obama acted as judge, jury, and executioner.

Killing Bin Laden, a non-citizen was one thing; killing U.S. citizens something entirely different.

  28. The lack of skycrapers is probably indicative of the economic situation in Montreal compared with the rest of Canada's major cities. Montreal's skyline sure looks nicer than Toronto's, though, in my opinion. Toronto's skyscraper boom happened too late and Toronto has too many of those cheaply built, cookie-cutter glass and steel condos swallowing up most of the landmarks. Montreal's skyline may be smaller, but it has more character.

Now taking apero with some friends here in Calgary and we just stumbled on Quebec's economic outlook for 2013. Quebec will still be assessed as both a net recipient from ROC and a small player. Among some major points:
"With some of Quebec’s political leadership in apparent denial about the coming economic reality..."
"Quebec faces a hard economic road ahead"
"many Quebecers appear to have no idea what is about to hit them."
"private investors are having second thoughts about investing in the Quebec economy."
"The natural population growth rate will become negative around 2023 despite improvements in health."

Bottom line: "Quebecers should prepare themselves to pay higher taxes in future to maintain these services, or expect an erosion in service quality"

One of the things the editors mentioned was that they were surprised to discover this feeling that anglos have of being a “minority in a minority”, which they were unaware of, assuming anglos here felt like part of the majority. They used to feel angry about being served in English in Montreal but after having lived and travelled outside Quebec and moving to NDG, they now feel much more sympathetic and have more in common than they thought, understanding that anglos in Quebec feel much the same as francos in Canada. Fortunately, this is far more typical of Quebec francos I know than that certain sadsack you mentioned.

    2. Why was that removed? This is all I wrote:

Urbania Magazine, a French-language arts publication, just published a special issue all about Quebec’s anglophone culture. A very interesting interview with the editors about the issue was discussed on today’s CBC Radio 1’s show “Cinq à Six” but the podcast won’t be available online for a week or two yet (at http://www.cbc.ca/cinqasix/archives/).

Unlike a certain embittered, hate-filled sadsack we are all acquainted with, the sovereignist-friendly editors are genuinely interested in building bridges between the communities.

"The call to declare popular Canadian pop singer Justin Bieber “persona non grata” in the Philippines has started to gain more support from Filipino congressmen who are now passing a House of Representatives resolution supporting the ban."

"A loyal fan of American boxing champion Floyd Mayweather, who is also a Pacquiao critic, Bieber posted three pictures on his Instagram account which ridiculed Pacquiao as the Filipino ring idol lay motionless after being hit by a surprise but wicked blow from Marquez in their fourth fight last Sunday."

The third photo showed a baby Simba (lead character in the Disney film, The Lion King) with Pacquiao’s knocked-out shot on the canvas. It was captioned: “Dad wake up.”"

    2. Part 3

"Led by YACAP Party-list Rep. Carol Jane Lopez, the congressmen decried Bieber’s series of Instagram posts that mocked Filipino boxing idol. “Banning him will show how seriously we take our national pride,” Lopez said. Lopez, a close friend of Pacquiao, was joined by the boxer’s other Lower House colleagues.

“It’s a matter of national pride. It doesn’t matter if it is someone as big as Justin Bieber or just another foreign national making degrading or insulting comments about a Filipino citizen,” stated Lopez.

Lawmakers said just like all Filipinos and fans around the world, they have already accepted the defeat of Pacquiao but to be mocked and insulted through social media by Bieber should be dealt with accordingly."

He said, "So I bought the place turned it into a Chuckie Cheese and fired him." he needs to be more careful with his bragging. Arthur Godfrey wasthe biggest thing in entertainment and especially TV. We all know Montreals economy has been chronically underperforming every other city in Canada for the past 35 years..the skyscraper count is just another confirmation on this. Its pretty clear to me that we have just past the top of the real estate bubble here in Montreal..never seen so many buidlings being built in the last 11 years..thats a good sign of a top. When people are very confident and building like crazy its all downhill from here.
A year from now everyone will be moaning and groaning on how horrible the real estate market is. All these idiot speculators building condos all over Montreal will be shaking intheir boots..some of them bankrupt..people will be whining at the government to do something about this. Unemployment will be rising.. Marois will be blaming Ottawa for the economic malaise and telling everyone how much better things would be if Quebec was a seperate country. The anglos will be even more depressed than they are now and wondering why they didnt sell their houses 2 years earlier.
