ELECTION REACTION- SOUND OFF

HERE'S YOU CHANCE TO SOUND OFF ON THE ELECTION IN REAL TIME! (Don't forget to refresh every few minutes!)

250 comments:

  1. Whatever the outcome, this is going to be fun.

Given that I will be a full-time resident of Toronto in two weeks, I'll be leaving this blog after tonight. I refuse to let this bother me anymore.

Whether you're an anglo or franco, I sincerely hope you readers get a decent government in place, I really do.

So until the end of this evening, let's rock folks!

    1. Harvey: Toronto welcomes you with open arms! Congratulations on a very wise decision. Actually, you're not completely out of the woods. Do keep in mind that Ontario is still the largest net contributor to the equalization payments, and Quebec gets half the money. Please don't be complacent and do keep in touch with this blog.

  2. First of all, a few months ago, I claimed that the PQ would suffer the same fate as the Bloc in the next election. Before this even starts, I have to admit now that I was obviously wrong.

That being said, who's ready for another decade of PQ rule?
Are you Ontario folks ready for the boost to your economy? You better thank all the PQ voters!

  3. I left Quebec earlier this year but despite that I am very afraqid of the outcome of the election. When I first moved to Quebec it was the anglophone community that truly embraced me and made me feel welcome. It hurts me to see the rights of my friends being destroyed. It hurts me that I had to leave the province because I felt discriminated and even though I learned to speak French and made efforts to integrate myself fully into the Quebec society I could never be one of them. Sad to see that politicians are feeding people with hate that is only promoting more and more instances like that video we saw yesterday of the anglophone guys getting yelled at for not speaking french.

    1. PBoy, unfortunately that's not going to end with the election of a PQ government, albeit a minority government. Let's see what happens in coming days. I have a feeling Marois is going to make every effort to appeal to the more ardent separatists of the CAQ with cabinet positions if they cross the floor, at least enough of them to put her over the top.

A minority is better than a majority, but that's all. It's going to be very expensive, just like minority governments usually are, so just add it to the almost $253 billion debt load the debt clock is currently showing.

    5. I must confess I was a bit jumpy too at the early going for I prefer a minority PQ to a majority, but at least it would give a last chance to get the poison out and hopefully getting it off one's chest sometimes helps. Then again, this is Quebec, and that vitriolic video on the Sept 3rd blog was particularly disturbing. Again, though, you can see the antagonist had a big mug of beer in his hands, and only God knows how many mugs he swilled prior to that video.

Anyway, feel better people...for the moment. Now we'll be able to see just how skillful she really is this Pauline Marois and her 30 years in public life. I don't think she has anywhere near the prowess of Goldilocks, but with him off the scene, it renders the PLQ as more impotent that they would be had he won his seat.

However, this might also be a cynical ploy. The over-tolerance on the gay front could be a way of compensating for intolerance on other fronts (like language). It's hard to tell.

I have a WordPress account, so I can still post if the Editor shifts his blog.

Look, I don't know that much about Quebec politics, so I'll just ask a simple question. Harper began his tenure as Prime Minister with a minority government, but during the next election he won a minority. If Pauline Marois ends up premier of Quebec with a minority government, how likely is it that she and the PQ would be able to do the same thing?

    ReplyDelete
  31. We're not quite done yet, but the only surprise tonight is the Liberals managed to take second place as official opposition. I honestly thought they'd be completely wiped off the map.

So, it's likely going to be a Parti Quebecois minority, just a few seats short of majority. Question is, will members of the CAQ or QS jump ship back over to the PQ to give them a majority? Or the CAQ and the PLQ form a coalition government?

    3. Here is a comment in today's Globe and Mail:

My Canada includes the north, half of Montreal, the Outawais, and the southern townships.. If Canada is divisible so is Quebec. There is zero argument against the partition of Quebec. What's left of Quebec can PLEASE leave! Canada would be so much better off. We would quickly form some of common trade arrangement with Quebec (Canada-lite). We would have NONE of the crazy transfer payment (a savings of billions). About a fifth of our national debt would disappear (as it is percapita and not based on the size of the territory Quebec leaves with). We would just have to build a highway around the rump of Quebec (one in the north to Labrador and one through the southern townships). Canada would wind up looking like a gigantic letter "C" (how appropriate). Kick the disloyal parts of Quebec out, keep the rest. They are a joke. Welfare bums all of them. This time it's different. No one in Canada cares if Quebec leaves. They will also LOVE Harper the more he stands up to this blackmail. Talk to anyone outside of downtown Toronto. They LOVE it when the feds give Quebec tough love. Harper is the real originator of the Clarity Act (aka Reform's Plan "B" which sent urban Toronto into hysterics of fear until it worked!). But Harper is a champion of greater provincial power and less federal meddling. He would probably have no problem with all provinces (including Quebec) having greater autonomy. Marois will be pushing Harper to do something which he has always wanted to do...loosen the ties of confederation (and why not). All this means is that Ontario is going to lose more and more power as Canada decentralizes. As long as Harper cuts the transfer payments dollar for dollar with areas of responsibility Quebec assumes...it's a win win.. Personally if there was a way to provoke this economic basket case into leaving Canada I'd be happy. They are like Greece...lazy...and ungrateful... Kick them out.. They'll be begging for help soon enough. We should offer then ZERO when that time comes. They will become this broke backwater. And one last thing... Just because they become a country doesn't mean they get to treat Anglos like crap. Free of the blackmail we can reassert our rights to speak English in Quebec. The feds can stop spending $4 billion on transfer payments and start spending it on bolstering the English language community and culture in Quebec. All of North America speaks English. Quebec is a pathetic joke..

      Delete
    4. First of all, not all of North America speaks English. Only the majority. You're forgetting Haiti, Cuba, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, the French departments in the Carribean, the Dutch departments in the Carribean, Mexico, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Honduras, Costa Rica, Panama and St. Pierre & Miquelon. Those are a lot of people. The Quebec partition movement shouldn't be about separating the English parts of Quebec from the French ones. If we want to do that, how are we any better than the separatists? We should want a bilingual province where people are free to speak their language, whether it's English or French or Klingon. I don't care if the province is French majority, I couldn't care less. Most French Canadians couldn't care less if they lived in an English majority area as well. I wouldn't judge people by their language to the same extent as I wouldn't want to be judged by my language myself.

      Delete
    5. FROM ED BROWN
EDM Who cares what they speak in Haiti Cuba or anywhere else. When we speak of North America we're actually addressing Canada and the U.S. That's where the economy that affects us is.
They all speak English. You want a province where people are free to speak their language. So do we. That's what the partition is all about. Stop seeing the Province through rose coloured glasses. Our language is not free. Where have you been.

      Delete
    6. Sorry, Ed. I suppose I misinterpreted what you said. I must admit I sort of skimmed through it the first time I read it. Reading over it again, I can see where you're going. The language restrictions have got to go, and we're on the same page there. If they are not taken away, Quebec will remain as economically restricted as it is lingually restricted. Bill 101 is one of the primary causes of Quebec's economical decline in the latter half of the 20th century. Now I understand what you were saying. Sorry for the misunderstanding.

  38. A friend actually pointed out that the PQ and the Republicans have a lot in common: an exclusionary ideology that they're willing to sell out their fellow countrymen to be able to implement. Sad, really. I hope the US fares better in November.

As a point of inquiry (c'mon, I know Canadians like educating ignorant Americans), can anyone explain to me why ridings in Canada do not have to have equal numbers of residents? Part of why the PQ has the representation it has is that electoral weight is hugely skewed toward "the regions." Back in the States, this would be grounds for a high-profile civil rights lawsuit. Under the US Constitution, districts have to be redrawn after every census. This seems like Democracy 101 to me.

On a separate note, anyone want to buy a condo in the Plateau? ;-)

I Hope you are right. I hope the shit hits the fan, and I hope it hits it BIG TIME. There needs to be radical change in this province, and maybe a crazy anglo tryign to set fire to an auditorium filled with thousands of seppies is the spark that was needed !

Get your head out of your ass. This was carefully planned and orchestrated. You dont just decide after three beers to head on over to Métropolis, shoot two people and set fire to the place. This was not a spur of the moment thing.

Si tu veux, comme moi, la souveraineté et bien un jours tu vas réaliser que l'on ne l'aura pas à moins de changements radicaux. Ça fait 40 ans que la chicane perdure. Les anglais ont une bonne expression: YOU CANT MAKE AN OMOLETTE without breaking eggs !

However, all this PQ and Quebec bashing, we've seen in the past weeks, built up some kind of tension. With all this tension, I'm not too surprised by what happened tonight.

What we need now is Charest to approach Legault for a coalition. If he waits she will find a way to pick up the other three votes that she needs. Some of Legaults people are his old PQ cronies who might be convinced to cross the floor for the right price.

Pauline marois had an election platform basically telling the minorities to submit to second class citizenship status. Your anglo friends had good reason to call her what they did.

First off: how is your name any more original than mine or any others ?

Secondly: Marois did not say those things. You are sayign that she ''basically'' said that because it's want you want to believe. No one is kickign anyone out even if we seperate. You can stay and live in Québec for as long as you want even thoguh you are a minority or an anglo. You might have to speak a bit more french in the workplace or in the streets than oyu would like to but youll get used to it. Its easy to become bilingual. If I can do it, you can do it too.
