What Makes Pauline Marois Tick?

Over these last years of blogging, I've refrained from writing much about Pauline Marois largely because I didn't believe I could bring much insight. Aside from crossing her in the hall a couple of times, she, like other peekists remain largely a mystery to me.

But events surrounding her these last months have been nothing short of extraordinary and even as an uniformed observer I'd like to make some general observations.
At least it will allow readers a platform to sound off in the comments section.

First things first.
If you are a federalist like myself, you cannot help but hope Madame Marois hangs on as long as she can. The destructive forces surrounding her leadership serve to discredit the entire sovereignty movement and realistically, as long as she is leader, the PQ isn't going to win any elections.

The utter lack of faith in her within her own caucus and the very public displays of disrespect, is an unheralded situation that leaves the electorate convinced that the party is unfit to govern, sovereignty or federalism aside.
Could you imagine how you'd feel if the door to the cockpit of a plane you've just boarded was left open and you heard the pilot and co-pilot screaming at each other before takeoff? LEMME OFF!!

Readers, I'd like you to consider the situation in the Quebec Liberal party, where scandal after scandal has ripped through the party, yet Premier Charest endures, untouched by insurrection among the party faithful.
Solidarity is just about the only thing the Liberals have left and perhaps the PQ could take a lesson, but as I said, as a federalist, I hope not!
Every political party in Canada understands that without solidarity and loyalty towards the leader, a party cannot expect to win the confidence of the people. Everybody except the Peekists, that is and so it is no surprise they are paying the price in the opinion polls.

One thing I've discovered about Pauline of late is that she's made of sterner stuff than her predecessors, the PQ leaders before her, who abandoned the job rather abruptly, either pushed or in a fit of pique.

The PQ caucus has always been a hotbed of discontent, with every member seeming to have leadership aspirations which they hope to enhance by backstabbing the leader.

And so, it's been a PQ tradition to dump their leaders rather unceremoniously and without much respect.
The fact that Levesque, Parizeau, Boisclair, Bouchard and Landry went so quietly and without a fuss belied the fact that the PQ is a political party steeped in the tradition of patricide and perhaps soon to be, matricide.

But Marois' fall from grace has little to do with her leadership skills as is claimed by the backstabbers. She is, simply put, the fall girl for the political fortunes of sovereignty, which seems to have fallen out of favour with Quebecers, who cringe at the thought of another losing referendum.

Like a cellar dwelling hockey team, it's the coach who gets the blame and subsequently the axe for poor performance.
For the PQ, blaming Pauline is just about the only choice they can make, the other option is to admit that the party platform which is based on sovereignty just doesn't resonate with Quebecers any more. That scenario is unthinkable and so Pauline must be the problem.

But Marois isn't going quietly, something PQ veterans seem to be astounded at.

By sticking around in the face of so much adversity and hostility Madame Marois displays an utter 'sang froid,' and stubbornness that I never knew she had. Her capacity to soldier on in the face of so much back-stabbing, is simply amazing.

Madame et Messier PaulineMarois
Madame Marois has always been an expert political 'operator' cut from the same cloth as Jean Charest. She has survived her own scandals with barely a scratch.
Her detestable husband, Claude Blanchet, is wealthy in his own right. While Marois was a cabinet minister in the PQ government of Jacques Parizeau, her husband was appointed, as director of a new Quebec government investment agency, the Société générale de financement du Québec but was eventually forced out over charges of gross incompetence. During his five year tenure at the helm of the agency, it lost over $800 million, during which time, he and senior management paid themselves generous bonuses, year after losing year!' When he was finally ousted, he negotiated himself an $80,000 pension for life, as well as hundreds of thousands of dollars in severance!
I've been told off the record, by businessmen who know him professionally, that he's the type of guy that you count your fingers after shaking hands with him.

The power couple live in a controversial eight million mansion on Île Bizard, which was the subject of considerable controversy at one point. It was alleged in the Montreal Gazette that the couple paid off someone in order to legitimize a zoning change for the property. Read: How estate was built on public, farm lands.
See breathtaking pictures of the chateau Here
The couple sued the Gazette for $2 million over the article, but when the controversy petered out as expected, they settled out of court with the newspaper. The Gazette in the strangest of settlements, admitted that the story could have caused the couple harm, but was in fact true...Huh?  Link{Fr}

So  Madame Marois is not any stranger to being attacked over personal ethics and like Premier Charest is an expert at the political game of shuck and jive.

Like the Energizer bunny, Madame Marois just keeps going and going, but at this point it's fair to ask, why she is trying so hard to maintain her position, which by all counts appears untenable.

What on earth is a girl to do?

While I hope she stays, the Christmas recess might give Pauline the quiet time necessary to decide that it might be time to give up the ghost.

The loss of the by-election on Monday, in Bonaventure, while expected(it's a Liberal stronghold,) is still frustrating for Peekists. Watching the hated Premier Charest hold a riding while being so unpopular must be galling and even though PQ support actually rose, it remains little consolation to hardliners in the caucus, a third of whom need another term in the National assembly to become eligible for a pension.
Now with polls indicating that the PQ can do better with Gilles Duceppe at the helm, perhaps even winning, the pressure on Marois to leave is enormous.

If she does leave, I hope she blows up the party as a parting gift.
How?
She could either give a speech wherein she buries the sovereignty option or worse still stay on long enough to put a referendum back on the front burner.

If she publicly commits to a referendum within six months of taking power, come Hell or high water, it would satisfy the militants, but destroy any chance of electoral success at the polls.

As Christmas approaches, I can't think of a better present for federalists.
Ah....to dream!

There are no federalists left inh the National Assembly. There all corrupt, and the "Anglophone" MNAs are Quislings that may as well have been Jews working for the Nazi SS rounding up and gassing their own.

Richard French, Clifford Lincoln and Herbert Marx were the last "Anglophone" MNAs with integrity and gonads. They would have chosen the gas chambers over gassing their own. They resigned from the Assembly 23 years ago this month.

To quote Charlton Heston's last words in his role of astronaut George Taylor in Planet of the Apes: "Damn yourselves to hell!"

And now, ladies and gentlemen, it is past my bedtime. Very succinct of me this time around. Good night!

  6. The Separatists are in the midst of seeing their dream of an independent country floating away beyond reach (hence the renewed focus on cracking down on English,  its like clockwork).  The PQ has no one to blame except themselves. Their idea, born in the 60's, was meant to address the problems faced by francophones IN THE 60's. Through negotiation and dialogue, I would say most if not all of their initial grievances have been addressed within the framework of a united Canada. The time has come to put this movement to bed and to roll up our sleeves and row in the same direction. Canada has been largely sheltered from the collapse of the Worlds economies but it is clear, the ground rules have shifted. We are dealing with heavy weights like China and their slave labour wages. The rich North American lifestyle will in all likely hood not be an option for the next generations.

I'd like to recommend this article by Conrad Black, who despite what you think of him is an excellent Quebec historian. http://fullcomment.nationalpost.com/2011/11/26/conrad-black-how-the-roc-bought-off-quebec/

Dude you epically fail to understand that Quebec is not a country, as for Poland ... let's see some fact as per Wiki:

    Formation
    - Christianisation[c] April 14, 966

    - Second Republic November 11, 1918
    - People's Republic December 31, 1944
    - Third Republic of Poland January 30, 1990

As for Quebec ? I really don't see your point.

Yes, size-wise Quebec is large, but when you superimpose the actual population on its area, you only have a blotch in the Montreal area, a small blotch in the Quebec region, and very faint dots everywhere else. Poland has the population of almost 40 million, so larger than Canada as a whole.

But we digress. The point is that if I approach an average person on the street say in Poland (since I can relate from experience here) and say Winnipeg, they'll say a city in central Canada. If I say Texas, they'll say a US state in the midwest of the United States. If I say Kilimanjaro, they'll say the highest peak in Africa, if I say Mount Everest, they'll say the highest peak in Asia, if I say Melbourne, they'll say Australia, etc...But when I say Quebec, they say eeeehh?

However, if the same person is asked about Canada, I am pretty sure he will quick to respond and be able to draw the maple leaf flag as well.

  36. Robert McCrum, William Cran, & Robert MacNeil. The Story of English. New York: Penguin, 1992: 1

"The statistics of English are astonishing. Of all the world's languages (which now number some 2,700), it is arguably the richest in vocabulary. The compendious Oxford English Dictionary lists about 500,000 words; and a further half-million technical and scientific terms remain uncatalogued. According to traditional estimates, neighboring German has a vocabulary of about 185,000 and French fewer than 100,000, including such Franglais as le snacque-barre and le hit-parade."

    ReplyDelete
  37. Which language has the most words?
I heard an interesting factoid at lunch yesterday. There are apparently one million words in the English language which supposedly puts it far ahead of any other language. This came as a surprise to me, while I've grown to enjoy English for its precision, this would mean it contains over ten times the amount of words of the french language (80k). It is no surprise to me however that French is stagnating, simply because the language is regulated by committee, and we all know how efficient those are. And so when we need a new word say to convey the meaning of "email", a group of people in France have to get together and pick one (courriel). Hardly a natural and vibrant process. But does the English language truly have a million words? Wolfram alpha will quickly tell you that the Oxford dictionary has 600k words, putting it ahead of say Spanish with a mere 225k. English is growing very quickly because it incorporates other languages readily, perhaps because most English speakers are not native. In fact China has the largest population of anglophones in the world

You have no idea the screening and medical tests an immigrant has to go through. Even an elevated blood pressure is a reason to not be accepted to become a resident in Ca. And by the way, QC has autonomy over the immigration process, so it's choosing its own immigrants.

Honey-bunny, gratitude? Gratitude for what? Imperatif Francais? In case you don't know, in order to be accepted in Qc, you have to pass a looong interview in French, so 99% of the immigrants can speak French very well. How about the Quebecers show gratitude for the !%^$load of money pumped into the economy? If I recall correctly, each family of immigrants HAS to come to Qc with $10,000/person. Which means that a couple pumps $20,000 in the Quebec economy. Yes, this sum is supposed to cover medicare or other problems. Keeping in mind the selection based on health only, you'll realize that these immigrants won't need any costly treatment for a looong time. Pair that with the fact that most of the immigrants are fully-trained, with post-secondary education or grad studies, they will probably will not stay unemployed for long, so really... all that money goes straight into the QC economy. Yeah... so for that, you're very welcome.

"Enfin on ose le dire dans les médias.Oui au droit de vote dès l'âge de 16 ans et non au vote de immigrés de moins de 3 ans de résidence en sol Québécois."

To stay on topic, you could have asked me what I think about all the foreigners who come to Warsaw to work for the multinationals, and work and live there in English and not in Polish. Or about the immigrants from Asia who settle there and do not assimilate (maybe because they're too busy working and feeding their families). And if you ask me what I think about those people, I'll give you the answer.

I also have to say, nice try with the "respect your host" trick. I work, pay taxes , and live off the money I make, and you're not my host. As for the "minority should conform to the majority" notion, it's a nice trick too to immunize the majority from any criticism. Editor debunked this notion very well in one of his recent posts.

  86. I love how the "my language has more words!!" argument comes back every week or so..

Anyways, Pauline Marois, just like Parizeau, Bouchard, Landry and Boisclair before her, is just an opportunist. She couldn't care less about the little people of this province (how could she, she lives in her corruption-castle, isolated and completely detached from normal society), what's important for her are her own interests, and those of her friends.

The separatist movement (which is pointless since the 80s) is just a good excuse to exploit Les Québécois who don't know any better (a fairly decent percentage of the population, since education is not encouraged in this province).

Here's a question: does anyone remember Pauline Marois' time as minister of education, or health? I do, and she's the reason why both those systems are in the state they're in today.

These people are opportunists; they have no real beliefs, and they will do whatever is convenient for them.
Parizeau's visit to the Montreal Jewish General is the best example, but today we get a new example:

    http://www.cyberpresse.ca/actualites/quebec-canada/national/201112/08/01-4475753-statut-special-pour-langlais-chez-bombardier-aeronautique.php?utm_categorieinterne=trafficdrivers&utm_contenuinterne=cyberpresse_B4_manchettes_231_accueil_POS3

Yes, believe it or not, the OQLF has allowed Bombardier (a company from this province) to operate in english since the 80s. How many employees does Bombardier have? But yeah, "Kif-Kif Import", that was a serious problem.

So once again, the rules don't apply when it's convenient for them. Examples like this make it quite clear that these laws, that are supposed to "protect our language and culture", are mainly based on racism and intolerance towards non "Québécois de souche".

"Oui au droit de vote dès l'âge de 16 ans et non au vote de immigrés de moins de 3 ans de résidence en sol Québécois."

A good example of the acceptance of racist propaganda in this province. In 1995, Parizeau got on TV with his glass of Gin and told all the Québécois that their "country" has been stolen from them by immigrants and rich people.
That made it official for the separatists, of course, and we can still see the results today.
No separatist will ever accept that they lost TWO referendums.. They were robbed!, and there's always someone else to blame.

It also shows how the separatists and language nazis are willing to completely discard democracy (we'll decide who votes!) and all its rules for their cause. "Screw letting people decide, I want Jacques Parizeau and Lucien Bouchard to decide for us!"

I have asked a few separatists what they think the province would be like today if we were our own country and Lucien was in charge.. I'm especially curious about how the shale gas moratorium would be going.. Morons..

  90. That SEPARATIST Pierre Boudreau is such a Loser. The only thing GREEN is his brain. I think that it has turned to mush. One would have to wonder how he became one of the elected officials of the Moncton City Council. I like my version from an ACADIAN Genealogist much better.

    Acadian facts…..

In 1713, he chief census-taker Charlebois, stated” Today! In Acadia, there isn’t a single Indian that does not carry French (European) blood, nor is there one single French (European) that does not carry Indian blood!”

In 1713, the treaty of Utrecht between the British and the French passed all control of the people living there (Acadians) to come under the British laws, in exchange for a few small Islands and some trading right, after which, between 1713 and 1755 NOT ONE SINGLE new European (French) person settled in Acadian, so, if everyone was half Indian in 1713, they were all half Indian in 1755, and since the British did not invade Acadia till 1755, there was a period of mixed breeds running Acadia with no ties whatsoever with France, and during the deportation, FRANCE did not accept one single deportees to their country, those who were sent there, ended up being sent to Louisiana (A Spanish territory) by the French.

The deportation was not over Acadian land (The British did not start to settle in Acadia until the mid and late 1760’s) rather it was to eliminate the Indian resistance since all the people in Acadia were half -breeds and there was no way to tell who lived as an Indian or who lived as a white, except to send raiding parties up the St. John River to kill everyone they could find there since it was the base from which all the resistance leaders lived, and then to make sure all these leaders were eliminated by rounding everyone up and deporting them.

The deportation was not over land ! It was over native resistance because from 1678 to 1752, the British could not settle north of the Penobscot River because the leaders of Madockawando son-in-law Jean D’abbadis De St. Cating and his descendants who led the Wabanaki Indian tribes in a gorilla war, that’s why every single treaty up to the deportation was signed and usually negotiated by this family, so, since the British couldn’t tell those in Acadia who lived like Europeans from those who lived like Indians, the only solution was to deport everyone they could!

The tricolor French Flag was created after the French revolution, many decades after the deportation, so not a single pre deportation Acadian ever saw that flag, or were in anyway loyal to France leading up to the deportation because France sold all the Acadians to the British for a few small islands and some trade deals!

The University of Moncton, in collaboration with Quebec, has created a false history and fabricated a cultural lie that never existed.

And how does "dealing with clients/suppliers internationally" affect the language your in-house employees use? There are certainly tons of companies who have to do business outside this province in other languages, should the same exception apply to them? Are you *actually* defending Bombardier for using english?? (I wouldn't be surprised)

Just like I said, the language-nazi rules only apply when it doesn't cause an inconvenience for them.
There can always be a "valid" excuse apparently.

This just shows that language laws are not addressing a real problem, and do not cause harm to anyone. They are simply based on racism/intolerance. It only bothers you when non-québécois use a different language in this province?

You can say that you're trying to protect your culture, but you're just lying to yourself. Everyone (except for brainwashed ignorant québécois) knows the truth. I'm sure americans also found many "valid" excuses to justify slavery and segregation.

Logically, you can imagine the Québécois dream:

    - No more dirty english people in this province. If you know more english than Yes, No, Toaster, you are sent to another province.
    - No more dirty foreigners ("vote ethnique") in the province.
    - Any rich Québécois (traitors) like Péladeau are sent to another province
    - Immigration accepted only from french nations. Since nobody from france wants to come here, that means Haiti and other underdeveloped nations.
    - All current businesses/corporations in Quebec (owned by non-francophones) handed over to the unions (FTQ / CSN / International)
    - Unions running all businesses
    - Since the businesses ran by unions will soon fail, all Québécois back to their farms
    - One language only in the province (French)
    - Education ends at grade 6, after that you're expected to go work "à la ferme".
    - Pauline Marois (or Jacques Parizeau) running the province from his or her multi-billion dollar castle on Ile Bizard, going from village to village during election campaigns, giving out household appliances in exchange for votes.

You're right, things will be worse than what I had imagined.

The uneducated québécois, after decades of depending on the unions to defend their incompetence and give them excessively high wages, will not be able to run their own farms.

Furthermore, the province's financial situation after separation (being realistic, not expecting Canada to just hand over whatever we want) will not permit for transfers to farmers. They will no longer have any money to invest.

Pendant ce temps, Pauline Marois mange du caviar dans son chateau sur l'Ile Bizard, pendant que son mari joue au golf à Elm Ridge avec tous ses amis anglophones et juifs.

And from my experience with businesses (yes, I am an immigrant too), the majority of them are run by immigrants. I guess immigrants have more drive, and pay more taxes. One thing I observed from the St. John the Baptist's parade was the affinity they had with farm life. No less than three floats depicted country / farm lifestyle and its costumes. None of the floats showed, let us say, aerospace industry. Quebec is the center for that industry and it is fairly easy to portray.

Why? I think the consciousness of separatists is still on that bygone era, when most of them were peasants.

The problem is that already Quebec is controlling their own immigration policy... They seek the best of the best from everywhere.
I remember that higher education was essential in my file. Masters degree, certifications, they even ask for your grades at school ( yes , i assure you ). It took me 1 day to perform all medical tests: blood, HIV, lungs, skin, STD's ... Also language tests for french and english.
So you see, in a way, almost all immigrants are some sort of super citizens ;> that can start anywhere form scratch.
As I said before, 8000 km away from home, in a completely different society and culture ... you have to move fast, to be versatile as f@ck and so on...
I wonder if you take a pure laine quebecois and send him to ... Germany let's say, or Portugal...or even worse, somewhere in Eastern Europe. What then?

As I see it, the economy in the world is so fucked up right now, that a major change is mandatory...
Europe needs to form a unique state or they will blow up. The smaller/poorer countries will soon perish. And I'm not referring dimensions...
So you see, an freshly independent Quebec , if ever, will fail miserably in any way.

The problem is: do we want to experiment with our own lives or not? Do we have time and money for that?

This is a whole different subject. I recently read an interview with a USAID worker (an equivalent of Canada's International Development) and he recounted how stupid he felt when they sent him to Togo to teach farmers how to farm. It takes astounding levels of arrogance for the West to send young punks to remote regions (that often have been fucked up by western intervention and exploitation) to condescend on these people and teach them "western values". Also, the USAID has been used as a tool by the US government in many countries, like Somalia for example. I forgot the exact mechanism, but in the end the US would get out much more than it contributed to the "aided" country. In most cases, they would get access to their natural resources.

I know a few people back from McGill who work for Canadian International Development today. The were all in Africa and South America, and some of them literally think they're a godsend to the poor people they were sent to "help out". Listening to this I continue to wonder about the levels of delusion that some people achieve.

Just wanted to point out that the level of education they are seeking it's not to fill out dirty jobs, but to fill out the good ones... because apparently the 'hosts' don't need the good jobs. Plus immigrants have more motivation to work, I think...

  120. Funny how all of you will rant and bitch on the internet about all that is going on against the English in Quebec yet when there is a demonstration, such as the past 2 (First in April and again in October), yet no one showed up to protest against Bill 101. Things will NEVER change unless every anglo stands up and DEMANDS change and respect. The French fought to get these discriminating laws in place and it is our turn to fight to get us recognized and be respected. Please look out for the next BILL 101 protest that will be taking place within the next few months in downtown Montreal. Change starts with US ANGLOS !!!

  124. A survey says that autism will severely affect 6 French-speaking Quebecois out 10 and our beloved friend Press 9 is an actual proof that supports that claim…Not to mention, trolling around on this blog is the only thing he has as a pass-time since he lives off some sort of disability pension, which BTW, is subsidized, out of our very own pocket when taxation imposed, by the federal government and the fact of the matter is, he is too retarded to get a job or go back to school.
Mark one thing I am going to say, guys! What he does on a daily basis, is the only thing that will ever come as close as education or work because that Neanderthal, is just as incompetent as used sheet of toilet paper and he’s just probably one of those social outcasts that nobody wants to have in the near proximity or put up/deal with. He is he is just as worthless as a tattered rag covered in shitstain and I think we should just start ignoring his trolls because otherwise, he is gonna keep coming on this blog, spewing nonsense thinking that he is such of great importance, which I believe in my view, happens not to be the case at all.
Fuck you and eat shit loser,

"Une chose est certaine : Mon estime de soi ne se mesure pas en $."

Sure, sure. Have it your way. How do you measure it? Let me know what your achievements are. What about your education? Volunteer activities?

Surely you do not use the size of your dirk as the measurement of your self-esteem, do you? As it is now, it seems rather low.

  133. Ok then, no more attention to the troll. Be assured he will withdraw into his shell of insecurity if no one pays any attention. In complete agreement with anon@9:17. Pay not attention to the remarques of the ignorant SOB. For God's sake, He actually believes his precious Quebec is a country. A typical weak mind brainwashed by the Seppies and Pequistes who routinely revise history. One must admit, however, that his remarks are rather amusing and further enlightening unto the manifestations of the brain of a separatiste. Delusional and despotic.

How would you know about the quality of his English? It's superior to yours.

I'm not surprised that you look down on "outaouins." You hate just about everyone else around you, like "anglouilles", "canayens" and "amerlocs."
