Hugo Shebbeare is Vindicated!

Regular readers of this blog will instantly recognize the name of Hugo Shebbeare, a regular and passionate contributor who doesn't leave his tongue in his pocket when it comes to Anglo rights and his personal enmity towards the Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec, where he passionately argued on these pages that he was wronged.

Mr. Shebbeare generates a lot of controversy, as many on the other side believe him to be hyperbolic and sensationalist.
When he claimed to be threatened for his views, some were dubious, believing him to be a tad paranoid.

But lo and behold Hugo Shebbeare is vindicated.  Hooray!

Mr.Shebearre may not know it, but I attended the anti-Bill 101 rally incognito, and while I wanted to make my identity known, I chickened out in an effort to save myself the aggravation that he and his close ones have been subjected to.
Mr.Shebearre is a tireless fighter for minority rights and I am not embarrassed to call him a hero.

The next time I'm asked why I keep my identity to myself, I will always refer to the case of one Hugo Shebbeare !
Note to Hugo: Sorry you have to bear this burden!
'Major' Serge Provost

On April 18th, Serge Provost of the la Milice Patriotique Québécoise, was charged by police for a threat that he sent to Shebbeare.
Claiming that Mr. Shebbeare's postion was highly offensive, Mr. Prevost stated that he felt that he had to put him in his place and sent this message;
"I strongly advise you to tell your daughter that you love her and that you are doing this on her behalf, because you may not make it home on April 17th" (the day of the protest)
Serge Provost was arrested and pleaded "Not Guilty" of uttering a death threat. He claimed that he was just informing Mr. Shebbeare what might happen ....Sure......

Here's a video of the news  report;

Readers, how about some messages of support on the comments page?

  1. Good for you Mr.Hugo Shebbeare! Glad to see "Major" asshole here, is gonna have to face the music. Happy to see CBC news giving it some coverage. I highly doubt the "Journal" will even mention it.

  2. ...to Hugo S.: Kudos on your advocacy of minority rights in Quebec. I hope they throw that bastard Provost in the slammer for the maximum time such a crime is punishable, preferably, but not likely, the rest of his life.

Sadly though, I admit, I expect the sentance to be far less than it should be. When it comes to Francophone-Anglophone altercations, we ALL know how the chips fall in Quebec courts. With a society of kangaroos, what can you expect of their courts? No shortage of biased judges in Quebec, especially in these matters.

With any luck it will be appealed to the Supreme Court where hopefully Hugo will see as close to true justice as Canada can be.

In any case, Hugo S., rave on! I only wish the efforts like yours would put some people back into the National Assembly like in 1989. I can't believe the Anglo population acts as inertly as it does. On the other hand, it was a major reason I left Quebec in my mid 20s back in 1984. I didn't perceive much of a future in Quebec, and even if I had a good career there, I didn't think Quebec society deserved my best. I saved THAT for a locale where Canadians are far more loyal to their country and taxes are lower, and well worth paying where my needs are met first, not second.

  5. Good for you Hugo and the others who marched in the NO bill 101 protest. You have a lot of support across the country. These anti-English language scum bags in Quebec are a disgrace to the entire country. Keep up the fight for our equal rights in Quebec. Its pathetic that no politicians will come out and say repeal bill 101, give the English language equal rights in Quebec like they had for 200 years… Never give up. Never let these language Nazis tell you what to do. Keep up the fight, we are proud of all of you.

La culture francophone est la culture française de France. End of discussion.
Dire qu'au Québec il y a une culture est comme dire que l'Académie Française (thanks for this great European gift in 1635, C. Richelieu) et l'Orifice du Joual au Québec (OQLF) sont la même chose... A blasphemy. The destruction of the human dignity.

  10. Mr. Shebearre is very courageous. I don't think this kind of event will ever be print in a newspaper knowing the selfishness of Quebeckers.

But to Mr. Shebearre I would like to say: Quebeckers don't worth it. See the scandal recently that came between Jean Charest and Power Financial. I mean come on, Quebec province is crap and do not worth to work on it.

Someone of the intelligence of Mr. Shebearre should moved in another province where we will be appreciate more and won't have to fear for his live and love ones.

See, Quebeckers are stupid, sniff crack and whatever else. Quebeckers know they don't worth nothing but they really dislike to face the true. And one someone come out with the true, someone handsome, intelligent like Mr. Shebearre, well, this is very sad, for the dummies won't take it and they will do whatever they can to destroy him. Quebeckers are well known for their lack of common sense.

This being said, Quebec is a shame for the Canadian nation and it need to separate ASAP. PLEASE. Dummies with dummies, people of the nation with people of the nation.

Mr. Shebearre doesn't have to suffer because of the stupidity of Quebeckers. Someone of his intelligent should simply seek for opportunities someplace else. Quebeckers lack of social responsibilities won't change over night.

Wishing him the best and may God protect him and his family.

  20. Maybe the SQ and RCMP should be notified or asked why are they training/drilling in fatigues! It's illegal and against the LAW.

  21. Well, I see all the trolls have come out of hybernation after what seems like a fairly lengthy hiaitis.

Hugo S. has as much right to live where he wants just like everybody else. It's only too bad there are sick, racist and moronic detractors who would like to at least have him leave Quebec, but his perseverence has earned my applause. Having seen him only on YouTube, he certainly conveys himself as an intelligent individual who has tried to do more for his government employer than it deserves.

He seems to have lived in several places in and outside North America. Don't get me wrong, Quebec has a lot of pretty places to visit. I used to do pilgrimmages to the Eastern Townships every couple of years as I have roots there, but I couldn't be bothered with the fighting in Quebec and so I left. My needs to go have lessened considerably over the last couple of years so I have been going less often and I imagine I'll be going even less often in the future. I don't dislike Montreal, just the politics, and I'm glad to be paying Ontario taxes where I feel most welcome and my contributions towards society are appreciated.

This is why people don't want to learn French here. They feel like they'll get critiqued at the first sign of error. Here is the sentiment you've just expressed: "Come to Quebec! Where we'll force you to learn French and make fun of your accent the whole time you're doing it!"

""...when it's really a province like all the others..."

Webster's Dictionnary: Quebec: province E Canada extending from Hudson Bay to Gaspé Peninsula area 595,388 square miles (1,542,056 square kilometers), pop 7,546,131.

Wiki: Quebec /kəˈbɛk/ or /kwɪˈbɛk/ (French: Québec [kebɛk] ( listen))[8] is a province in east-central Canada.[9][10] It is the only Canadian province with a predominantly French-speaking population and the only one whose sole official language is French at the provincial level

You realize that your opinion doesn't make things fact right? Especially when less than 42% of the province shares your opinion.

  38. Thank you Editor again, and I am sorry that that I didn't recognise you during the Rally.

Both triumph and disaster are both impostors, so there will be no real celebrating until we see the judge's sentencing.

I appreciate the support, thank you very much everyone. We are all in this together and the Canadien's coach and his recent comments regarding the mega-guilt trip they are giving him for working in an Anglophone company are simply juvenile harassment.

Colonel Brown has his own opinions and acted entirely on his own by publishing the Marois comments on his own site, well before the online Committees actually started gaining any momentum. I tried my best to contain his extremism, and focus the energy on positive ways for change.

Brown went too far with the those comments, thus the SQ arrested him rightfully to see if he was a threat - and he was determined not to be, despite the unnecessary hateful propaganda.

If Provost cannot do simple research and see that my views are different from Jim Brown's that only accentuates the reason why this 'Major' and his gang of misguided nationalist-territorialists should not be breaking the law in the first place with illegal drilling nor arming themselves with illegal weaponry.
It is for sure his demand for a permit to sell arms will be rejected considering he hurls death threats at someone whose FB photo has his daughter in it while explaining our democratic right to protest. Provost has a real listening problem (tried to explain to him directly our point of view in his languag), and it seems Radio-Canada does also, since they did not air any footage of the balanced interview, although Nancy and I did the questions in FR also.

  45. ***before reading. I apologize if this offends anyone, especially Francophones. This is entirely my opinion, what I believe, and especially, how I feel, from being a child during the referendum, to becoming a college student. I don't wish to create intense arguments, but simply express my feelings towards this issue. Read if you are interested
    ----------------

Well "they" certainly make "us" anglos feel like a race worth hating. If it's just a language, you certainly make us regret having it as a mother tongue. If it's not a race, or a language (even though it certainly seems so important), I believe most people's arguments against ENGLISH presence in Quebec, really, is targeted to a Culture, and its language as a cheap invention for targetry (lack of a better word). I don't feel at home in this province, (born here), and neither do I feel appreciated on a provincial, or commercial level. Hell my French friends and allophone friends are the best, as are my anglo friends, but who my friends was never an issue. It's the fact that I exist, prefer to speak a language that I'm fluent in, and not only not to be judged for not being fluent in french (although I speak it), it's that I see "anti-MY-culture" everywhere I go. Being English has less to do with actually speaking it, it's pretty much where you come from in Montreal. Cote St Luc, Westmount, NDG, Cote Des Neiges, West Island +++, French, Irish, Scotts, and British worked all over these places. Hate them, but don't hate the nature of the generations that have sprung and changed over the years. People should notice Montreal is Unique, it is not like Quebec City. It shares it's goals of keeping its roots of being primarily french, english second. Why can't we still be second, instead of "frowned upon"?

This is my home, despite the province of quebec making me feel unwelcomed. And no, I don't want to move to Toronto, even if life would be easier. I would miss my home, having bilingual relationships, eating POUTINE, and watching multiculturalness of English, and most certainly, French artists. We are not American, We are not the West, or the ENGLISH, we are the Anglophones of Quebec. Proud of it, as much as I would be if I was born under primarily french roots. But I'd never make another culture feel inferior to me, especially if it's a very big minority. Thank you, and sorry if my words are harsh. It's bothered me for years.
