Conservative Majority will Crush Quebec

While Quebec voters continue to delude themselves that it's in their best interest to vote massively for the Bloc Quebecois, the penny has finally dropped on Quebec commentators who are starting to widely report what I've been saying for almost a year now, that Harper has more or less abandoned the interests of Quebec in favour of an English only based majority government.
“...Mr. Harper, utterly frustrated by the betrayal, decided to write off Quebec for good and rule with a minority, while seeking a majority, outside the borders of  Quebec.NoDogsOrAnglophones- April 2, 2010
Quebeckers have finally convinced Stephen Harper that Quebec is a dead end, a place where governments go to die, not to find majorities. Coldly turning his back on the Province, Harper is slowly and deliberately setting out to take Quebec out of the Canada equation and like the oblivious frog in the pot of cold water, the heat is being turned up.” NoDogsOrAnglophones- May 17, 2010
A realistic analysis of the death of 'Quebec Power" in Ottawa, was written last week  by commentator Joël-Denis Bellavance in La Presse
"Mr. Harper and his senior aides were so firmly convinced that further gains in Quebec would allow them to gain a majority in Parliament...

But the results of the federal election of October 2008 shattered that belief. After a difficult electoral campaign and despite a respectable record in Quebec, the Conservatives won only 10 seats (they have since made a gain at the expense of the Bloc in Montmagny-L'Islet-Kamouraska-Rivière-du-Loup). At the same time, they won a dozen more seats in Ontario without a campaign of seduction.

Since then, the political Quebec-Alberta
axis has officially been replaced by a new coalition: Ontario/Alberta. For conservatives, obtaining a majority in the House of Commons passes through Ontario." Read the full story (fr)
Last week's cabinet shuffle underscored this Alberta/Ontario axis, with those promoted to the cabinet representing Albertan and suburban Toronto area ridings. The promotion of Peter Kent, a unilingual Torontonian was particularly galling to Quebec as well as the newly-elected Julian Fantino, a "big C" conservative who is also no friend of the province.
No Quebec minister lost their job, but none were promoted. For hard-working Steve Blaney, of Levis, Quebec, it's a bit of a disappointment. Link fr

It's clear that Harper is looking to high-profile candidates to knock off Liberals in the riding rich suburbs of Toronto, known colloquially as the the 905's (after the area code.) Building a conservative majority now runs through southern Ontario and while nothing is sure, it is the only viable option left to the Conservatives.

That's because in Quebec, the Conservatives realize that they are dead.

The Bloc Quebecois MP summed it up neatly, not realizing that his analysis, underscore why Quebeckers shouldn't vote for the Bloc;
"They're picking people from Ontario because we are possibly on the eve of a federal election. There is a political message here. He's winking  at Ontario, noting that he obviously cannot improve his score in Quebec . Mario Laframboise, Bloc québécois
For separatist journalist Josée Legault, it's somehow unfair that the Prime Minister has turned his back on Quebec.
As a longtime advocate of squeezing Ottawa for whatever Quebec can get, whilst pursuing a sovereignist agenda, a policy that has been quite successful over the years, the fact that the gravy train has pulled into the station and parked, is particularly hard to take.
In a blog piece appropriately entitled Bye Bye Québec, Ms Legault reports rather bitterly that Quebec no longer figures in Harper's plans.

Whether Harper can actually pull off a majority government is debatable, he certainly can't do it today. Most likely Harper will work on southern Ontario over the next months and recruit more 'star' candidates with promises of cabinet positions.

If the Conservatives do achieve a majority, it will be nothing less than apocalyptic for Quebec.

Free from a large Quebec presence in the caucus or the cabinet, Harper will get down to payback, punishing Quebec for turning its back on the Conservatives.
Quebec can expect him to follow through on all those ant-Quebec legislative initiatives that have been impossible to pass under a minority government.

First he will finally add those thirty seats to parliament, diluting Quebec and the Maritimes political weight in Parliament. Out of those thirty seats, the Conservatives will probably win about two-thirds.

Next he'll pass legislation removing federal subsidies to political parties, a move which will cripple the Bloc Quebecois, since they don't really raise any money on their own. Quebeckers have shown themselves the least generous Canadians when it comes to reaching in their pocket and so the next time Mr. Duceppe wishes to visit Washington to speak, he'll be riding a Greyhound bus.

Most importantly, Harper will curry favour in the ethnic communities of Toronto and that means no decrease in immigration levels, which stands at a devastatingly high level, that is slowly, but surely eroding Quebec's demographic position.

These policies are a given, but it could get worse if the Conservatives decide to 're-work' equalization payments or fiddle with bilingualism.

For Quebec, a Conservative majority government represents a grave threat, one that is starting to scare the crap out of political commentators in Quebec.

But oblivious as usual, expect Quebec voters to send the Bloc back to Ottawa in force, not believing or realizing that four or five years of a majority Conservative government will destroy what is left of 'Quebec Power' and change this country forever.

Quebec may react by voting in a separatist government, but without enough votes for independence, it will be another case of the worst possible outcome.

For Quebec there's nothing left to do but to cross their fingers and pray for the good fortunes of the federal Liberals., otherwise......

  1. Finally, FINALLY, Harper does what someone should have done a long time ago. It's about time someone does something that inflicts serious harm to the "Quebec Power" in Ottawa. Perhaps Harper's actions is a reflections of people's sentiments in the ROC, that Canadians are fed up with Quebec's deception. Good on you, Stephen.

Then let's just hope that Canadians decide to finally take control of their country by voting for a government that is willing to face this despotic province, instead of handing out appeasement dollars and letting the sore fester for other generations.

It's bloody ridiculous it's taken THIS long to figure out Quebec is a **monster** that will never, ever, end its terrorizing the rest of Canada. Give it all it wants, let it take want it wants....it will never be satisfied and act as a monster towards minorities. It's like trying to appease a shark so it won't bite humans. Good luck.

Well well well! Maybe Mr. Harper IS reading what Mississauga Guy has been writing all along!

Too bad...I still like the idea of a political party that blatantly promotes "English" Canada first and "French" Quebec last. Two thumbs WAY up for Harper. He's finally getting it.

I wish you wouldn't mention that f---ing b--ch Josée Lecul-de-cheval! Her voice, her face and her being reeks worse than raw sewage! I can't believe the Gazette and CJAD pay for that piece of animal excrement that would be of more use in a cornfield. Everything she talks and writes about comes out of her vitriolic corn hole and makes me wretch!

The Gazette has ALWAYS been a rag and since Gord Sinclair took over CJAD and since his death, it has become a very dim shadow of its former self.

I must end this commentary now because as I write, my gag reflexes are starting to kick in.

  6. I hope the editors predictions are accurate a play as he suggests. For one, (a westerner) I am tired of the continued pandering to the despotic province of Quebec. Cancelling the toonie per vote contributions will pretty much eradicate the BQ. Adding more seats will dilute Quebec's influence in Ottawa. The CBC is also going to get a major haircut and its about time.

Paybback time and Stephen H is about as vindictive as they come. Hope he gets his majority.

And there you have it, ladies of gentlemen. The mentality of self entitlement drilled in the heads of the Quebecois since about the 1960's. The mentality of using blackmail to extract favors - do as we say or we separate. The mentality of getting respect through legislation (2000$ fine for speaking English - anyone?) instead of getting it the old fashioned way - earning it.

Such sad case, this Quebec, isn't it?

All he has done is kiss Quebec ass for years, all this funnelling of our money into Kebec for 10 bloody seats. He would have already achieved a majority had he not spent the last 4 years kissing Quebec ass.He has pissed a lot of us off outside Kebec...

Time to cut; get rid of the subsidies, the expensive, phony, forced bilingual BS only outside Quebec, ad more seats... Gut equalization…no money for your arena, your arts BS…I love it, get on with it. Get your majority outside Quebec and tell Quebec to rot in hell.

Until you racist bigots running Quebec repeal bill 101, you deserve nothing from the rest of the country.

Better still: Vote NDP. Layton and Mulcair are the modern day Dathan and Abiran [see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dathan], or a couple of Benedict Arnolds for those not as well versed in the Bible. They should serve the Quebec that has only twice in history voted in NDP candidates very well---IF they win! Wow-wee, two candidates in a history almost 150 years old, and even one of them won a by-election for only half a term--and HE was an Anglo American!!! Keep up the good work, French Quebec, the noose for you is only getting tighter!

I will bet that you find the Quebecois men as attractive as the women.

That is why roads throughout the province of Quebec are full of cracks and potholes, overpasses are crumbling and bridges are collapsing. Quebec has the worst road infrastructure in North America.

A friend of mine worked at Pratt and Whitney in Longueuil, where jet engines are manufactured. He said the best engineers were from Germany, Scotland and Northern Ireland - not from Quebec.

This would suggest then that the Quebecois are not that distinct at all and are not a nation, but are really just a mish-mash of other races and cultures. There may have been a slight influx of new blood into Francophone families in cities such as Montreal, but there has undoubtedly been some inbreeding amongst those living in small, isolated towns in more remote regions of Quebec.

    Again, based on what?

I would argue that Quebec Francophones are inferior to both Americans and Anglo-Canadians because they are far less productive. The Quebecois are dependent on the charity of Anglo-Canadians, which they receive every year in the form of massive transfer payments. Otherwise the Quebec economy would collapse.

You are living on land that is not yours. It was stolen from the Native people. And both of the names you use to refer to yourself - Quebecois and Canadien - were stolen from Native languages.

The adoption of our current Canadian flag and anthem was done to appease and accommodate Francophones (which is impossible). I would be very happy to have the Red Ensign flag reinstated and use "God Save the Queen" again as our national anthem.

  30. "I would be very happy to have the Red Ensign flag reinstated and use "God Save the Queen" again as our national anthem."

Keep in mind that these symbols would be in effect in the province of Quebec as long as it remains a territory of Canada (and that could be a long time, given the result of the last two referendums).

"Puisque le Parlement "canadien" a reconnu notre nation"

Parliament only recognized the 'nation' of Quebec (within Canada) because Stephen Harper wanted Quebec votes and because it was politically expedient to do so at the time. It really doesn't mean that much. There are many Native/Indian nations across Canada.

The same United Nations that condemned Quebec for human rights violations because of its racist and oppressive language laws?
